THE COMMUNITY CHURCH NEWS Vol. I l l F r i d a y, O c t o b e r 23, 1936 THE BIRTHDAY Many are the memories that come stalking in like ghosts or sunbeams at the wayside inn, called the birthday. Yes, yes, I have a birthday the 18th of October. I have heard it said that was the time that I was born. Personally I am unable to recall any of the events of that day, there was nothing unusual. I had no choice, was not consulted, announcement was made that I was born and it was up to me to make merry and make good if possible. I am not sure the numlber of mile posts it requires to make the first tipan of a boy's life, however, I remember it was worth while as a small iioy to have a birthday, having birthdays was next thing to Fourth of July or Christmas. That was back in the span we call preparation. Yes, mister, I will soon be six years old, going to school next fall. Where's the lad that doesn't remember that first day at school, that, day when he met a hundred other boys and as many girls, that day not far from the sixth birthday, the boy moves out from home out into a great new world. Twelve years of age, gracious Auntie exclaimed, he will soon toe in his teens. I remember wondering what on earth the teens were, prclbaibly something like the mumps or chickenipox. Fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, I was careful about combinit the hair, washed well about the ears and baok of the neck, I had discovered I was in the teens. Time, time, how merciless is time. Well, time rolled me along like it does everyone else. So I found myself in another stage, it might not be aimiss to call it achievement, a span of years wherein one is self conscious. A woman seldom goes about broadcasting that she is thirty-seven or thirty-nine or fortyone. A professional man or business man is usually so busy in the tniddel span that when told of his Seimon :- STOW, OHIO No. 4 3 birthday he explains, My, I had forgotten all albout it. It's in the middle span that the load is heavy. One meets stern realities in this pull, that we call achievement. Responsibilities, family, business, a man's best, sometimes his all, is staked here. Many there Ibe that pass not on, they weary, they quit, they fall cut of the ranks that's the middle span. New, then, I am not sure just where the third hitch begins and I am not saying that life on earth it to be measured toy. just three lengths. However, for all intents and purposes the average life will feature into the three named divisions, preparation, achievement and retrospection. There is a sort of a summit of the years, the harvest time, something like an afternoon. No, I am not of that class to wish that I had never been born. Life is mighty interesting and all its wonders are not back in the teens. Many old philosophers have written that wisdom is a rare quality, that it takes sixty years to reach it. It's like a rare orchard it requires years in which to mature. Now have you noticed that while a man forgot all albout his fortyfjfth birthday he exclaims, with a merry twinkle in the eye, I'll be seventy tomorrow, three score and ten. He hasn't forgotten and he is proud of it, and when he reaches eightv he tells all his friends albout it, still on the upward climb, sort of sitting on top of the world, pitying the boy back across the years washing his ears and scrubbing his GEO. It will give you a new alignment of life. T h e Minister h a d a birthday S u n day and he m a d e a speech, everyone seemed to enjoy it very much. Mr. S a n n e r and Mr. Bishop were appointed a committee of two in the men's class to see what can be' done about a male quartet. T h e r e were 154 in Sunday School. T h e Minister spoke Sunday on t h e subject of Being Past Feeling., He said t h a t a careless conscience soon fails tp heed warnings. He stroke of t h e insensibility of this., generation to the spiritual urge, ha mentioned h u m a n deipravity, the fact of being abandoned and cross-; ing the dead line. The Minister d a r e d t h a t people could be so coldj as to refuse a warm stove, they could be so hungry as to refuse food. T h e Minister gave graphic description of a disease or a burglar seeking their victims and iif the victims only knew how they would bestir themselves. From this he drew the analogy of like and worse conditions of spiritual dearth in Stow, and a people t h a t are Insenski ble to their own insensibility. The t. Some folks after reading last -week's Church paper wondered why Mr. Stein and Mr. Monteith are looking- for a porta)': le sehoolhouse. If you must know, they want to erect such a building on the lot just south of Community Church to be used for badly needed Bible School class rooms. BOYS CLASS Two weeks ago on Friday evening Stow Community Church, consisting of boys of Junior age, held a tusiness meeting and get together at the home cf Fredrick Troesch. Officers elected at the business meeting consisted of Harold Rolbinscn, President; Jinumie Mincks, Vice President and Fredrick Troesch, Secretary-Treasurer. After the meeting the boys were entertair.d in a properly conducted "Chamber of Horrors." Refreshments, chocolate milk, doughnuts and ice cream. The following Sunday President Harold Robinson appointed a committee consisting of Jim Mochersbciiigh, Eddie Sanner, and John 'Byron Stockman, who met at the home of the latter on Thursday of last week to work out a merit system. More, on this next week. A Halloween party for this group of boys is being planned for the class on next Friday evening. Attend Eible school boys and find out about it. WE VISIT The Bilile School Orchestra visited the Graham Road Baptist Church last Sunday evening. "We went along and noted the following about the church there: First: They have a regular Sunday evening service. Second: The church was crowded. People sat in chairs in the aisles, etc., etc., and they certainly can sing. Third: They have two different B. Y. P. U. Study classes which meet on Monday evening. Fourth: They have a Wednesday evening "Praise and Prayer Meeting." They study the 7th chapter of John this week. Fifth: They have a Board of Deacons that is apparently in good working order. They were to meet on Thursday of this week for the purpose of revising the Church Rcll, which thing is done once a year. Sixth: Their Young Men's Bible Class were to have a party on Friday evening at the home of one of the members. Deacons, young people, members and friends in general of Community Church can ponder the above. THE COMMUNITY CHURCH NEWS 7 MEN'S, BIBLE CLASS The 1 subject of our lesson for next. Sunday is "Christianity is Love." Paul's first letter to the Corinthians contains (passages which are truly classical literature. The thirteenth chapter of this letter is widely quoted, often referred to and seldom fully appreciated nor understood by average readers. The subject matter of this lesson deals with three cardinal virtues namely: faith, hope and charity. The first two are quite readily understood but the third, which Paul emphasizes is the most important, involves a series of translations from the ancient Greek which often convey a meaning different from that intended. The Greek word is AGAPE which translated means Christianlike or Christlike love. Other adjectives used Iby commentaries to describe it include ardent, energetic, active, self-forgetting 1, self-sacrificing and vicarious. It is the virtue that Rev. Halme referred to last Sunday relative to the approach necessary to lead people outside the influence of the church to the feet of 'Christ. To be concerned primarily in our own welfare, to attend services and absorb and appropriate good things and to enjoy Christian contacts is. quite necessary to acquire faith and hope but something more than this is plainly indicated by Paul in order to gain eternal life within God's Kingdom. *You are responsible for the influence you exert. Not Only is this true of the kind of influence but it is also true cif the degree to which you are active. We ma,y differ as to methods but the necessity for action is imperative. Paul plainly states that, without charity (love) we are nothing; that we are as.tinkling cym-. bals. James 2:17 reads: "Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone."
