1 THE COMMUNITY CHURCH NEWS VOL. V I I I MAKING STOW, OHIO, PEOPLE FRIDAY, OCTOBER HAPPY Suppose t h a t was t h e order of the day, suppose t h a t all people everywhere would be actuated to such a worthy purpose m a k i n g people happy. There a r e m a n y things along the way to take the joy out of life, the tooth ache, or the little girl looses h e r dime, or one has a flat tire, or company came and m o t h e r and d a d were unable to attend Bible School, these and a multitude m o r e of calamities t h a t a r e joy killing. However making people happy is a business, a trade, a craft, a vocation. It's a Kingdom business, the vocation or regular employment of the church folk. "These things have I said unto you t h a t my joy might remain in you a n d t h a t m y joy might remain in you that your joy might be full." John Our business, my friends is making people happy. No one ever led a human soul to Christ but t h a t he experienced joy, no one ever sought forgiveness b u t they experienced joy, no one ever went out of their w a y t o do a kind and loving deed but t h a t they experienced joy, all this m y people is a p a r t of the great program of the church. So w h a t must the church do to m a k e each other and all t h e world h a p p y? Be sure t h a t your religion is of the happy kind, t h a t it has an inner glow, t h a t without, it has cheer and sunshine. Let us plan and work out a program t h a t will create happiness all along t h e line Visits, flowers, surprises, group gatherings, singing, all have a part in the great contri- 17, 1941 No. 4 2 bution of happiness. Remember too, if we would m a k e folk happy, we m u s t m a k e t h e m happy in their own way. W h e n one plans a gift to a friend a t Christmas or a birthday they give thought and consideration as to the article t h a t would please the one receiving the gift. If a boy wishes f o r skates and Saint Nick r e m e m b e r s his n u m b e r and leaves for him a fine pair of ice skates on Christmas morning, t h a t boy's happiness is complete, if the good f r o w has dreams of a new coat and lo a coat is in evidence a t an appropriate time the good woman w a s m a d e happy, happy in her own way. If a son shall ask bread of any of you t h a t is a father, will he give him a stone? Or if he ask f o r fish, will he give him a serp e n t? John A by-product t h a t this scripture contains, is a consideration f o r the other fellows needs, then meet t h e m and happiness is the result. So m a k ing people happy is the big job of the church. You a r e wrong, cries some church man, t h e business of the church is getting people saved. So friend I remind you t h a t the g r e a t head of the church m e t the Disciples one morning by the sea side, t h e y had toiled all night and caught nothing, poor men they needed fish, so the Son of Man bade t h e m cast their net again and on t h e other side, and they enclosed a multitude of fishes, they were no doubt hilarious with joy, f o r t h e son of God had m a d e t h e m happy in their own way, omitting sin, evil and questionable pleasures it is therefore our duty to m a k e folk happy. No more long faces a t

HULME BIBLE STUDY LESSON OCTOBER 16 Golden Text: As many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. Rom. 8:14. The Holy Spirit is a person, endowed with a will to do, wisdom to plan and power to execute. Although the name itself is neuter, He is always referred to as a person. The spirit has been compared to a great, rushing wind. The wind cannot be seen yet its presence and might is certainly evident. So also, the works of the Holy Spirit are very evident. Creation is his earliest recorded work. He is the author of the Bible. All scripture written by men was inspired by the Holy Spirit. The great work of the Spirit at present is to reveal Christ so that men may believe. A soul believing on Christ receives that Comforter who never departs. A life yielded to his influence is lovingly guided in matters of daily living, business, social activities, family life and spiritu;'l growth. The Spirit strengthens and aids a Christian to become more like Christ. The more welcome He is the more powerful He becomes in an individual and with increasing power the believer is imoelled to testify telling others his experience to the end that they may be saved also. The results of a Spirit filled life are nine fold. In relation to God the fruit is love, joy and the peace that passeth understand- Where waves reach up to whisper to the clouds, or where they roar their message to the shores of man they can speak of nothing higher than a Service of Sincerity. 9 495 THE COMMUNITY CHURCH Ntvvo STOW MEAT MARKET Groceries and Fresh Vegetables We Are Now Authorized Dealer for Birds Eye Frozen Foods J. I. FISHER, Prop. OV-8610 PARK RAMBLING I have just come back from a long tramp through our Adele Durbin Park; and while I can still hear the rustle of the leaves and see the bounding cottontail making off up over the hill, I shall tell you about my afternoon adventure, for it was an adventure. Last spring when I told you about my trip down through the gully, I expressed the wish that the park board would mark the boundaries of the new park clearly so that people with a high regard for property rights could go down through the park without fear of trespassing on private land. For myself I had very little definite information about the extent or bounds of the public lands. You can imagine how glad I was, then, to have Mr. Woodring ask me to go over the park with him this afternoon. I was also curious to see what work had been done in grading the space next to the road, where I had heard a bulldozer puffing and snorting recently. So we went down to the park, my neighbor and I. We followed the north line of the park westward past the greenhouse and, incidentally, through as pretty a group of dahlias as one could wish to see. By the way, I hope Mr. Sechrist finds other suitable spots around the park where his big, glorious floral beauties will thrive. It would be an added incentive for many to visit the park. On down over the ledge we climbed following the boundary by watching for the trimmed bushes where the surveyors had opened a vista through the brush. Near the creek we lost the trail, and remembering the general outline of the park map which Mr. Woodring had left at home, we struck out in a southwesterly direction in search of the south line of the park which we found away over at the west end of the field after a deal of hunting and sighting. It was easy to follow it west after we picked it up where it entered the wood. Away back there in the woods we came on the southwest corner of the park and started back along the west line at a sharp angle to the south line. This boundary is also easy to follow through the underbrush. This west boundary line runs t in a northeasterly direction to NU-WAY CLEANING AND PRESSING There is a Difference INVISIBLE SHOE REBUILDING KNIGHT SERVICE CO. WA Front St. Cuvaboflr* Ffills

The southwest corner of the park is long and narrow and triangular in shape. Down over the bank we angled along this line to the valley floor. Just about the corner of Mr. Mountz's land we crossed the creek, and soon afterward the boundary cvrrtoed up a way on the north rim of the valley only to drop back to the valley again. We found the stakes marking the northwest corner of the park a few rods beyond the stream where we lost it earlier in the afternoon. This metal stake is marked with the points of the compass. At one spot up along the north rim the boundary is marked by a low stone wall placed there by some land owner in the past. About the time we crossed the creek Mr. Mountz called to us from the woods nearby where he had been observing a red-breasted nuthatch, a rare visitor in this locality. It seems that our nuthatches here have white breasts and the red-breasted ones seldom stray this far west. I asked him about the quicksand holes with tales of which Mr. Green very nearly scared me out of the valley last spring. Mr. Mountz seemed a little skeptical about the quicksand. I'll leave that controversy to be settled by these two old explorers of the valley. Mr. Mountz stayed with us until the lengthening shadows warned him that it was time to return to his bird traps for the afternoon check. Fortunate indeed is the stroller through the valley who FEEDS FEEDS CHICKEN DOG HOG DAIRY Baughman Feed Store OV-8413 STOW, OHIO

COOK COAL DELIVERY LIGHT HAULING WA Front St., Cuya. Falls meets up with Mr. Mountz, Stow's student and bander of wild birds. I now know the boundaries of the park. It's a pretty big place and includes a rather large part of the gully. It should include more, and I for one promise that all voters at our house will support a proposal whenever it is offered to us to provide funds for the purchase of additional acreage so that Adele Durbin Park may be more nearly a natural unit and its boundaries may be extended to take in all the natural beauties of this pretty valley with its interesting little stream and attractive ledges. I'd like to see the park have an entrance where Route 91 crosses the head of the valley. I hope too that the park board have saddle trails built through the park and that some enterprising individual will establish a riding stable nearby. I think the park has the features for excellent riding. Who else is with me in this suggestion? I hope there are many. U1KK JOS. A.
