All Saints (Year C) 10:30 A.M. Sunday, November 6 th, 2016 Today s Texts: Daniel 7:1-3, 15-18 Psalm 149 Ephesians 1:11-23 Luke 6:20-31 (The worship service begins with the prelude. Let us silently prepare our hearts and allow others the same opportunity.) *We invite you to rise in body or in spirit Today s service is a double celebration! First of all, today is Stewardship Sunday so we are celebrating the conclusion of our 2017 Stewardship Campaign and giving thanks to God for the blessings we have been given to continue in ministry. Secondly, today is the day we will celebrate All Saints Day, an opportunity for us to give thanks to God for those who have joined the Church Triumphant. Chimes Prelude: The Saints Delight arr. Dale Wood Words of Welcome and Announcements Introit Father, We Come in Quiet Need Marian Wood Chaplin *Call to Worship Sing to the Lord a new song! Rejoice and give thanks, for the Lord takes pleasure in the people. Hallelujah! *Prayer of the Day Holy God, who calls your people into one beloved community, who teaches us the way of peace through life together, who fills us with visions of your eternal reign: as we now celebrate the communion of saints, pour into our hearts the power of Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. *Hymn No. 327 From All That Dwell Below the Skies Page 2

*Invitation to Confession For the peace and unity of the saints, trusting in the promise of grace, let us confess our sin to God and to one another. *Prayer of Confession God of the covenant, who calls all people to reconciliation, you have made us members of the very body of Christ; yet we persist in wounding that body with our divisions, our suspicions, and our neglect. Forgive us, and teach us to nurture unity and peace. For the sake of Jesus Christ and the world he came to save; Amen. *Sung Kyrie *Assurance of Forgiveness In the great compassion of our God, the death and resurrection of Christ Jesus has shown us God s forgiveness for our sins. Therefore, I declare to you the entire forgiveness for all your sins in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Alleluia! Amen. Page 3

*Gloria Patri Glory to God, No. 581 *The Peace Since God has forgiven us in Christ, we also ought to forgive one another. The peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. And also with you. Please greet those around you Prayer for Illumination Pour out your Spirit upon us, O God; with your Word enlighten the eyes of our hearts, that we might live in hope; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. First Reading Luke 6:20-31 pew Bible pg. 65 This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Anthem O Lord of Life, Where er They Be Melchior Vulpius Second Reading Ephesians 1:11-23 pew Bible pg. 204 This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Sermon Our Saintly Inheritance Rev. Stephen M. Fearing *Hymn By All Your Saints Still Striving AURELIA By all your saints still striving, for all your saints at rest, your holy name, O Jesus, forevermore be blessed! For those passed on before us, we sing our praise anew and, walking in their footsteps, would live our lives for you. We praise you for the Baptist, forerunner of the Word, our true Elijah, making a highway for the Lord. The last and greatest prophet, he saw the dawning ray of light that grows in splendor until the perfect day. All praise, O Lord, for Andrew, the first to welcome you, whose witness to his brother named you Messiah true. May we, with hearts kept open to you throughout the year proclaim to friend and neighbor your advent ever near. Page 4

For Magdalene we praise you, steadfast at cross and tomb. Your Mary! in the garden dispelled her tears and gloom. Apostle to apostles, she ran to spread the word. Send us to shout the good news that we have seen the Lord! We pray for saints we know not, for saints still yet to be, for grace to bear true witness and serve you faithfully, till all the ransomed number who stand before the throne ascribe all power and glory and praise to God alone. *Affirmation of Faith The Apostles Creed I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty, from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Call to Offering The Offer God, Whose Giving Knows No Ending arr. Emma Lou Diemer *The Doxology Glory to God, No. 606 Prayer of Great Thanksgiving The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. Page 5

Gracious and Holy God, you created the heavens and the earth and all that is in them. We praise you for you are our maker! Ps. 149:1-2 We praise you for taking pleasure in your people and lifting up the humble. Ps. 149:4 In all ages, you have been faithful to us, even when we were not faithful to you. You have sent prophets and witnesses to call us back to you when we ourselves grew weary, stumbled, or fell from your way. We recall some of their names before you in gratitude: Abraham and Sarah, Moses and Miriam, Isaiah, Ezekiel, and Daniel, Elizabeth and Mary, Simeon and Anna, Peter and James and John, Mary and Martha, Stephen, Paul, and Timothy, Tabitha and Cornelius. And we also recall those witnesses whose names are not recorded: shepherds and magi, a boy with loaves and fishes, a little girl raised from the dead, a man born blind, a woman whose back was bent, the prodigal son, the Samaritan woman, the rich young ruler, the widow with one coin, unnamed women, the Ethiopian eunuch, and countless more. With them, we join in the eternal song of praise: Page 6

Out of your great love, you sent One who was more than witness: Jesus Christ, your only Son, our Savior. Born of Mary, he lived among us, sharing our joys and our sorrows, even suffering the pains of death. By your power at work in Christ, Eph. 1:20 he was raised from the dead and is now seated at your right hand in the heavenly places, above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the age to come. Eph. 1:21 Together, with all the saints, we sing of the mystery of faith: Gracious God, by the power of your Holy Spirit, help us to set our hope on Christ Eph. 1:12 and live for the praise of his glory. Pour out your Spirit upon us, as you have poured out your Spirit on generations past, so that our love for all the saints might increase, and also our love for the world you love. May the bread we break and the cup we bless be for us the communion of the body and blood of Christ, until that day, until that great and promised day, when we will feast with all the saints in your eternal realm. Through Christ, with Christ, in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor are yours, one God forever and ever. This we pray as your Son taught us to pray, saying: Page 7

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen. Words of Institution Communion of the People All are invited to this feast. The bread and the juice will be brought to you by one of our elders. You are invited to partake of the elements as soon as you receive them. Please let our servers know if you require gluten-free elements and it will be provided for you. Prayer after Communion *Hymn No. 326 For All the Saints SINE NOMINE *Responsive Charge & Benediction The cross, we will take it. The bread, we will break it. The pain, we will bear it. The joy, we will share it. The Gospel, we will live it. The love, we will give it. The light, we will cherish it. kiva.org is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that brings people together to give micro loans (usually $25 each) to people in order to help them help themselves. Here s an example of how it works: Maria in Equador needs another dairy cow to increase her production and make more money with her dairy farm. However, things are tight so she doesn t have the money on hand to invest in a cow. Therefore, she applies for a loan through kiva.org where people like you can loan $25 (or more) to help give Maria the money to purchase the cow. Thanks to the loans from kiva.org, Maria can purchase the cow. Once the cow begins producing, Maria pays back the loan to kiva.org where the money you loaned goes back into your account. You can then either withdraw the money or re-loan it to another borrower. Want to join the SIPC KIVA team? Go to sipchurch.org/missions/kiva and follow the directions at the bottom of the page. To date, the SIPC KIVA Team has loaned $3,575 through 124 loans in 37 different countries! Page 10

Maureen s Haven Information The people who are Shelter Island Presbyterian Church have covenanted to partner with Southold Presbyterian Church to support Maureen s Haven in the following four ways: 1.Sending a dinner team - Starting on Wednesday, December 28 th, SIPC will be sending a team to Southold Presbyterian Church (for a total of two times throughout the season) to help prepare and serve the dinner for that evening as well as to help clean up. This team would gather at SIPC and then travel to Southold and would return later that evening. 2.Preparing the bagged lunches on the third Wednesdays and first Fridays of the month- Starting on Friday, November 4 th, SIPC will be preparing the bagged lunches that will be distributed to the guests upon their departure of the host site the next morning. This team will assemble right here at Shelter Island Presbyterian Church to prepare the bagged lunches and then someone will drive the lunches to the respective location. 3.Spending the night as Innkeeper to monitor the guests - On any Wednesday from November to the end of March, you can join others by spending the night at Southold Presbyterian Church with the guests. 4.Donating toiletry items - there will be bins placed in the SIPC Fellowship Hall closer to the holidays where you can help us donate toiletry items that will be taken to and distributed at Southold Presbyterian Church to the guests at Maureen s Haven. Please note that the options above are not mutually exclusive; you can do one or any combination of the above. Also, please note that volunteering for one date does not mean that you are committing to doing every date. If you are interested in signing up for one of the dates below please see one or both of SIPC s Maureen s Haven Co-Coordinators, Marianne Baird and Dana Hallman.
