LIVING OUR FAITH Dear Friends, Can you believe how the time is flying by? Labor Day is upon us and it is time to plan our Fall Schedule. Very soon we will be publishing a schedule of parish activities for the next nine months. These activities will include study groups with a variety of topics, lectures, social as well as liturgical gatherings and celebrations. I hope that more of our parishioners will take advantage of these opportunities to grow in their faith, become familiar members of the community and most of all, benefit spiritually from the opportunities. We are, of course, looking for volunteers to help us in many different venues: Helping to organize our social events including: pot luck dinners, barbeques, donuts and coffee on Sunday mornings and coffee after the morning Masses during the week. Providing leadership and organizational skills for our Ladies and Men s clubs. Assisting with gathering food for community food banks including Catholic Charities in Immokalee. Assisting with a committee to manage the charitable giving of the parish. Volunteers for Our Pastoral Advisory Council and Finance Committee. Helping with our Advent/Christmas Giving Tree Toy Drive for Immokalee and the local Catholic Charities. Volunteering by young people who are willing to serve Mass on a regular- scheduled basis. Helping Nina organizing our catechetical and young persons programs. Helping with future fund raisers for improvement of the parish facilities that are being planned. Volunteering to help as Ushers at all Masses on the weekend. As you can see we have lots of ideas, but we can only achieve them as a community of involved members. Please give some thought to getting involved in the fall and helping to build a community of friends in our parish. Blessing, Fr. POPE SENDS MESSAGE TO KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS Pope Francis says he has been comforted in the first months of his pontificate by the many messages of prayerful encouragement and solidarity he has received from so many Knights and their families. The papal message says that in fidelity to the founding vision of their order in the late nineteenth century, the Knights of Columbus continue to play an outstanding role in helping Catholic men to respond to their vocation to be protectors of creation, protectors of God s plan inscribed in nature, protectors of one another and of the environment. He invites each Knight, and every Council, to bear witness to the authentic nature of marriage and the family, the sanctity and inviolable dignity of human life, and the beauty and truth of human sexuality. In this time of rapid social and cultural changes, it says, the protection of God s gifts cannot fail to include the affirmation and defense of the great patrimony of moral truths taught by the Gospel and confirmed by right reason, which serve as the bedrock of a just and well-ordered society.
LIVING OUR FAITH The Knights of Columbus held an open house to kick off the new Council being formed here at OLMC. Family and friends enjoyed coffee and donuts, and were able to sign up as members of the new council. Pictured from left to right are: Lawrence C. Kocen, State Marian Program Chairman; a parish member that just signed up; and Charles Hall, a longstanding member of the Knights for 57 years. ASK FATHER FRED Question: Are non-catholics welcome at the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, and if so, what is the appropriate behavior for the non-catholic during the receiption of the Eucharist? Answer: All persons of faith and good will are invited to attend the Lord s Supper. Catholics by virtue of the grace that calls them to full participation in the Eucharist should be inviting and welcoming to all Christians and strangers. The grace of the Mass is present and beneficial to all participants. The real question is one involving the discipline of full participation. It is the teaching of the Church that reception of the Body and Blood of Christ in the Eucharist is a privilege and a sign of full communion and therefore restricted to those who are fully incorporated members of the Catholic Faith. Those who are not, are invited to attend and participate to the extent that they feel comfortable in doing so. We should even impart a blessing to them when they request it. However, they cannot be invited to share the Eucharist itself because they do not share full communion with the Catholic community. Full communion in the Eucharist is the most solemn and sacred experience of Catholic unity. It is a sacramental celebration of the new covenant won for us by Christ and given to us from the Cross along with His Church. Where there is lack of unity of faith and membership, it cannot be enjoyed without giving false witness - witness to a unity that is not there. This does mean that the lack of unity is the non- Catholic s fault. We are all guilty of the sin of division within and from without the Christian faith. Ecumenism and reconciliation is a vital part of the mission of the Church. However, as we search to find common ground for unity, we should not try to whitewash the divisions that remains by ignoring the ultimate sign of unity expressed in full participation of the Eucharist.
