BEGINNING AND END Faith is the beginning and the end is love. St. Ambrose Divine Mercy Sunday Today, April 3rd, the Sunday after Easter, is Divine Mercy Sunday. St. Faustina, in her diary, shared this message: The message of the Divine Mercy is simple. It is that God loves us--all of us. And, he wants us to recognize that His mercy is greater than our sins, so that we will call upon Him with trust, receive his mercy and let it flow through us to others. Thus, all will come to share His joy. (taken from http://www.thedivinemercy.org) Easter Sunday is a time of celebration! Jesus Christ has risen from the dead! After dying on the cross on Good Friday, Jesus was raised on the third day. He lives! Following Easter Sunday, the season of Easter begins and lasts for seven weeks, ending with Pentecost. The Divine Mercy message is one we can call to mind simply by remembering ABC: A Ask for His Mercy. God wants us to approach Him in prayer constantly, repenting of our sins and asking Him to pour His mercy out upon us and the whole world. B Be merciful. God wants us to receive His mercy and let it flow through us to others. He wants us to extend love and forgiveness to others just as He does to us. C Completely trust in Jesus, God wants us to know that the graces of His mercy are dependent upon our trust. The more we trust in Jesus, the more we will receive. They greatly appreciate all of your thoughts. The power of prayer does great things!

FROM THE PASTOR S DESK: We look to journalists and writers to give us their observations about life, current issues or often included thoughts and comments from other commentators, observers or pundits. Over the years I particularly enjoyed Andy Rooney, or the Chronicle reporter Herb Caen with his three dot journalism. Looking back at Holy Week, I want to step back and reflect on those three days with you. I can easily take faith for granted as priest and pastor because celebrating faith, charged with being the leader of prayer is what I do. On the other hand I am also an observer of others celebrating their faith. On Holy Thursday people gathered together for the Mass of the Lord s Supper, we received the sacred oils, heard the Word of God proclaimed and then set about the business of washing feet. It takes courage to surrender pride and take off that sock, shoe or sandal and come forward to the foot washing places. And when a married couple of many years came up to wash each other s feet I am moved, or watching a child wash his mother s feet. Think about it, how much does a mother do for her son or daughter throughout her life, and only much later in life are the roles often reversed and that is humbling too. We quietly left the church on Thursday evening after adoration and then many of the same parishioners returned Friday evening, Good Friday, God s day, to hear John s Passion, venerate the cross and pray for the world. When families, individuals, two or three people came forward there was an awe inspiring reverence not just for the cross, but the realization of all those we could reverence with our respect, love and compassion. I saw people visibly moved as each one came up and offered their gesture of veneration for the cross whether a gentle touch, a kiss, an embrace or taking a moment to kneel before the cross. After the dismissal we quietly left the church and returned in darkness on Saturday evening for the Easter Vigil to celebrate in word and song our faith and belief in the resurrection and renew the promises others made for us at our Baptisms. It truly is an organic experience of the faithful gathered. Before we renewed our faith, I serendipitously asked Are you ready? and people cried out yes. Then, people came to the baptismal font to bless themselves with the Easter water. People sang and celebrated and rejoiced! I was moved by the large numbers of people who joined in celebrating the Eucharist on Easter Sunday, singing loudly and with full voice: Jesus Christ is risen today! Alleluia. The Lord gives us the gift of a day, every day, let us rejoice and be glad as we enter into this holy season of Easter, 50 days singing and celebrating with full voices. And last but not least I want to express my thanks for all who ministered in front of or behind the scenes to help us pray and sing well. It takes many hands to ensure these celebrations are done thoughtfully, prayerfully and spiritually. Thank you all so very much!! Easter Blessings, Father Larry Hendel CONFIRMATION FOR ADULTS Any baptized Catholic adult who has received the Sacraments of Eucharist and Reconciliation, but not the sacrament of Confirmation is invited to consider celebrating the sacrament of Confirmation at Pentecost. Father Larry will begin a five session special preparation class for adults on Wednesday evenings at 7:00 PM in the Guadalupe classroom beginning, April 6 th. Those who complete the process will be sent to Saint Joseph Cathedral on May 15 th to join other adults who wish to complete their initiation by receiving the sacrament of Confirmation. Please call the parish office if you are interested (408) 997-4800. SAINT ANTHONY PARISH CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHING COMMITTEE Quotes for Reflection Where is your brother? The voice of his blood cries even to me, God says. This is not a question addressed to others: it is a question addressed to me, to you, to each one of us. These, our brothers and sisters, seeking to leave difficult situations in order to find a little serenity and peace, they seek a better place for themselves and for their families - but they found death. How many times do those who seek this, not find understanding, do not find welcome, do not find solidarity! And their voices rise up even to God! Pope Francis on Refugees Welcome to Saint Anthony Parish Amab, Lorena & Kyra Sur We would like to thank the 204 Parish families who have pledged $81,656.00 towards the ADA. Please remember, if you are making payments over time, via check, to send your checks to: Annual Diocesan Appeal Diocese of San Jose 1150 North First Street, Suite 100 San Jose, CA 95112 Your check should be made payable to the Annual Diocesan Appeal. Please make sure that your name and Saint Anthony Parish is written on the check. Thank you for your generous support. HELPING YOUR NEIGHBOR If you truly want to help the soul of your neighbor, you should approach God first with all your heart. Ask God simply to fill you with charity... with it you can accomplish what you desire. St. Vincent Ferrer
