From Pastor Dawn s Desk... 4 Then the king will come and say to those at his right hand, Come, you that are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and in prison and you visited me Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it also to me. ~Matthew 25:34-36, 40 On May 18, Rev. Elizabeth Eaton, the Presiding Bishop of our (national) ELCA called for a time of fasting and prayer on behalf of our country, and particularly for the needs of the poor. The harsh political rhetoric between the parties has contributed to gridlock, and the concern is that in the midst of the political posturing, the needs of the hungry and the poor will be overlooked. Throughout the Bible, the people of God are called to be compassionate towards the needs of others, and some of the harshest words of the prophets are addressed to those who neglect or take advantage of the poor (for example: Amos 5:11-15; 8:4-10; Isaiah 3:13-15; Ezekiel 22:29-31). I see this, then, not as a partisan issue but a matter of faith. Bishop Eaton invites us to respond in 3 ways: Pray-- Pray that God would guide our governmental leaders with wisdom and compassion as they work to prepare the budget for the coming year. Fast-- Fasting is an ancient spiritual practice which helps us look beyond our self-satisfaction to seek God s will and the needs of others. We are encouraged to fast on the 21 st of each month, as this is the day when 90% of SNAP recipients run out of their benefits, making the rest of the month a hungry time. You may fast by going without food for one meal, or all day; or give up technology or particular habits to help you rely more fully on God. Act-- Contact your representatives in Congress (and in state government) by letter, email or phone call, urging them to oppose cuts to programs that help hungry people living in poverty. For resources, go to www.elca.org/ advocacy or Bread for the World s resources at www.bread.org/fast This call has been on my heart since I heard of it, so I wanted to share it with you. Those of you who were in church the weekend of June 17 & 18 saw Pastor Dawn and me wearing stoles made out of burlap, representing the sackcloth that the people of Old Testament times would wear during times of grief or repentance. We plan to use these the weekend before the 21 st of the month as a reminder of this invitation to fasting and prayer. Thank you for considering this invitation to pray, fast, and act on behalf of the poor. In Christ s love, Pastor Ted Saturday Services at Shetek Once again this summer there are Saturday afternoon worship services in the Chapel at Shetek Lutheran Ministries lead by area pastors. These services are at 5:30 PM, (just a little later than our normal time) and anyone is welcome to attend. Dress casually this is Bible Camp! Pastor Dawn Quame will lead the service on Saturday, July 29 th, so there will not be a service at Christ Lutheran that Saturday. Join us at the camp! 5

6 We Are Servants Of Christ! Our Southwestern Minnesota Synod of the ELCA held its annual Assembly June 9 th and 10 th at Gustavus Adolphus College in Saint Peter. The Assembly s theme was based on Jesus Great Commission in Matthew 28:20, and specifically Jesus promise, And remember, I am with you always to the end of the age. Pastor Ted Kunze and Pastor Dawn Quame attended the Assembly, but unfortunately we did not get any lay delegates to attend from Christ Lutheran. During one of the sessions, Lutheran Social Services of Minnesota presented twenty Servants of Christ awards to congregations for their support of Senior Dining and Meals on Wheels in their communities. Christ Lutheran of Slayton was one of those congregations recognized! See the award on the Christ Lutheran Church Women s bulletin board in the hallway near the kitchen. There were two great worship services and a variety of workshops offered over lunch on Saturday. There was only one resolution dealing with some constitutional updates! We learned more about the resources being made available to pastors and congregations through the funding initiative, Embrace God s Mission: Equip God s People, and its three emphases: Deepen Congregational Vitality Enhance Local and Global Mission Develop Servant Leaders Consider attending next year s assembly, which will be June 8 and 9 in Redwood Falls, MN No Council Meeting The Executive Council has decided to take a summer vacation by not meeting in July. The next scheduled meeting is August 9. Camp Sunday Camp Sunday is August 13 at Christ Lutheran Church. If you attended or served this year at Shetek Lutheran Ministries, you won t want to miss this as we will share stories and memories and sing some favorite camp songs. We are blessed to have an excellent camp nearby and grateful for the impact camping ministries have on many of our lives. If you would like to help lead a part of this worship service, please contact the church office or one of the pastors. Let My People Go! On Saturday, August 19 at our 5:15 worship service, we will have the opportunity to enjoy a musical story about Moses and his incredible journey from Egyptian prince to Hebrew deliverer. This musical is brought to you by Musicals with a Mission from St John s Lutheran Church in Shakopee, MN. Extra Produce? As gardens begin to mature, if you have an over abundance of produce, the MC Food Shelf does accept donations of produce. You may contact Karen @ 836-8098 or Lila @ 836-8045. The Food Shelf is open on Wednesday afternoons. Bulletin Board Help Needed We are looking for someone who would be interested in helping decorate the bulletin board in the fellowship hall. Brenda Whitehead has taken this on for the last several years and is ready to share this with someone else thank you for sharing your time and talents, Brenda!! Please contact the office if you (or a small group) would like to take this on. 7

10 Support Summer Ministry The ministry of Christ Lutheran continues throughout the summer months. In addition to our two worship services every week, our summer ministries include Vacation Bible School, Circle Bible studies, sewing circle, a youth mission trip to Sioux Falls, ongoing pastoral care including funerals, renovation of our courtyard garden, and many other activities. In addition, we are starting to make plans and order materials for our fall ministries including Sunday School. Your financial support of all of these ministries is very important. If you find yourself unable to join us for worship for a few weeks, we invite you to contribute by mailing a donation to the church, or by donating electronically. We hope to see you at worship, though, as we praise God for the blessings we receive every day, all year long. Bible Journaling is one way to explore and respond to God s Word through writing, drawing and other creative techniques. Whether it is one word or an entire scripture passage we are responding to, Bible Journaling can be helpful for digging deeper into God s Word. If you are interested in learning more about Bible Journaling or want to continue Bible Journaling with others, a Bible Journaling Group is meeting throughout the summer at Christ Lutheran on alternating Thursdays from 3:30 5:30 pm. Our next gathering will be on Thursday, July 6. There is no cost involved. Just bring your Bible, some favorite writing tools and a journal or notebook. A few other Bible journaling tools will be available for your use. We will be focusing on the assigned Psalms from the Revised Common Lectionary when we gather, beginning on July 6 with Psalm 145. There is no need to sign up in advance just show up! You may also learn more about Bible journaling at www.biblejournalingministries.com and www.illustratedfaith.com. 12 13

Marcia Kunze and Gayle Davidson plan to attend full time, and others may be going there for a day. Thank you to all (including our Bible School families) who participated by contributing to the In- Kind offerings of underwear, T-shirts and personal care products. These items and several gift cards will be brought to the Gathering by Marcia and Gayle. Joy and Service I ve just recently been at my 50 year college reunion. What a great weekend it was, to reconnect with old friends and to remember friends who have passed on. As I have sorted through old books and memorabilia, I came across a book that helped me grow in my Christian faith. It s a book by Kent S. Knutson called His Only Son, Our Lord. My recollection is he was a theologian and the president of the American Lutheran Church body for a short period of time before dying in his 40s. Here is a quote that had meaning years ago and still does today. How long Jesus lived is of little consequence (we do not even know, for that matter), but what he accomplished is of eternal importance. How long you live is not the most essential element about your life either. But what is dreadfully important is what happened to you while you did live. A hundred years of meaningless routine cannot compare with twenty years of joy and service. Here s hoping you continue to have days of joy as you live out your faith and serve others. Ruth Hoyme Handmade Greeting Cards are available in the Library for $1 each. Proceeds will go to WCLC. 17

Members who are shut-in Service men and women Those who mourn the loss of loved ones Milestone Ministries Milestone Ministries include opportunities for congregations to mark significant faith formation moments in one another s lives. These moments may include the traditional things like Holy Baptism, First Communion and High School graduation. At Christ Lutheran, we do these events quite well. However, young people also experience many other milestones, such as entering Sunday school, receiving their Driver s License or attending Bible camp for the first time. As we anticipate the beginning of a new school year in September, we look forward to celebrating significant milestones with young people throughout the year. Cross+Generational milestone events will be offered using the Four Keys for practicing faith, which are, Caring Conversations, Devotions, Service and Rituals and Tradition. These events will be followed by a litany and blessing during regular worship for those who have experienced each milestone. At Christ Lutheran Church, we celebrate those who have attended Bible camp overnight for the first time with a special Bible Camp Milestone. This will happen on Sunday, August 13 before and during worship. All youth who attended camp at Shetek Lutheran Ministries during the summer of 2017 are invited to a Cross+Generational Event on August 13 at 9:00 am at Christ Lutheran Church. They are to attend the event with one special adult in their life, such as a parent, grandparent or Baptismal sponsor. Then, during 10:15 am worship that day, they will be invited to come forward for a special blessing and a small gift to mark this milestone. Please sign up in advance by contacting the church office. There is no cost involved in this event. Please watch your church newsletter, email and Facebook for information on future milestone events at Christ Lutheran. 18 19

20 Craft Kits Craft Kits for New Horizons Crisis Center will be assembled at Christ Lutheran on Monday, July 17, 2017 from 3:00 5:00 pm. All are welcome to join in helping with assembling kits or by donating craft supplies or money for purchasing extra supplies. These kits will be made available to families during supervised visits at New Horizons. Having a project to work on together and a few samples or ideas to get them started is a helpful way for parents and children to connect and build healthy relationships. If you would like to help in any way, you may call the church office or speak with Amy Nepp (507-370-3553). The following donations are currently being accepted at the church: Cash or gift cards for purchasing basic craft supplies New, unopened glue sticks Decorative craft scissors Paper lunch bags Jewelry making items, including beads, cords, elastic, leather cords and small containers to store jewelry making supplies. Blank cards and envelopes Paper and cardstock Individual foam craft kits Embroidery floss Wiggly eyes For older kids: Origami paper Small fabric scraps Sewing needles and thread Thanks in advance for your help. Please join us on July 17 as you are able. The next newsletter will be published in mid-august. Authorities from Miami, Florida have warned that during the coming months your lawn is in danger of being taken over by a small migration of pink flamingos. When we spoke with local authorities, they informed us that these birds were fast approaching Slayton and the surrounding area. The Real Deal For a $25 donation, Christ Lutheran Youth will put a flock of flamingos in someone s yard. The flock will stay in their yard until someone else requests an invasion or 48 hours. The flock can be placed in any person s yard in the community. You can have the flock land on a friend, family member, your boss, your pastor, your neighbor Flamingo Insurance is also available for $25, and guarantees that NO FLAMINGOS (of ours) will enter your yard. The youth will deliver the flock by night, and leave a note explaining our fundraiser to the recipient. Senders will remain anonymous unless otherwise requested. Money raised will be used for future Youth Trips. Thank you for supporting this bit of fun! 2018 ELCA Youth Gathering June 27 July 1, 2018 Houston Texas Find more information on our website. 21
