The measure has been taken for many centuries, and in some European dioceses it is possible to measure the level of engagement in worship by the population over the course of many centuries. Long ago, it was also the custom to track "Easter duty" by a statistical report. Penitents would receive a kind of chit at confession, which they would then turn in at their parish church when they received Holy Communion during Easter time. Long ago, of course, Communion was fairly rare in the life of a Catholic Christian, perhaps only once a year. The chits would be tallied by parish priests and reported to the chancery, which in turn would hold on to the records and include the statistics in a report to the Vatican every five years. Nowadays, the October count has proved especially critical in the life of our Church as bishops use the figures to measure the vitality of church life, to sketch parish boundaries, and even to decide when to close, merge, or form new parishes. --Rev. James Field, (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

St. Vincent de Paul Church Page Three Sunday, October 9, 2016 A NOTE FROM OUR PASTOR I want to give you another update from the parish gathering on September 11 that reflected upon our heritage going back to 1837 and focused upon hopes that we want to actualize in order to be an even more vital parish community. Our Parish Pastoral Council, which is the catalyst for parish planning and ongoing spiritual development, reviewed the input from that gathering and developed a core committee to assure that we would competently follow up what was said. Two areas that drew the most attention from the gathering and have become our first priorities are Faith Formation and Outreach to the Wider Community. Several people at that time signed up to enter into further conversation about specific ways we could strengthen these aspects of our parish community. We are looking for additional parishioners to be part of an initial dialogue about each of these possibilities. Please consider participating in either or both of the following conversations which will be held from 7-8:30 pm in the Scullen Room in our Family Center: Ways to Strengthen Faith Formation on Tuesday, October 25. Ways to Further Develop Our Outreach to the Community on Thursday, November 10. Your specific ideas will be valuable as we go forward. Thank you for considering this. WEDDING BANNS II Daniel Olszewski + Amber Pedulla FAMILY PERSPECTIVES Only one leper returned to thank Jesus for being cured. Sounds a lot like our families. We routinely do so much for each other that it is easy to forget to say thanks. Like Jesus, don t wait for thanks to care and give. And be like the rare one in ten who expresses gratitude. THE FIRST FRIDAY CLUB OF AKRON The First Friday Club of Akron will meet on Friday, October 14, 2016, at Tangier Restaurant, 532 W.
