Richard Antall, Pastor of Holy Name Parish has graciously offered to cover the funerals that may come in. Father Librado Baluarte from the Diocese of Sorsogon in the Philippines will be staying here at the rectory the weekend of July 5 th & 6 th. We will have a second collection for the missionary work in his diocese at our Masses during that weekend. Please make Father Librado feel welcome and kindly be generous in contributing to the missionary collection next week. Once again, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops is encouraging Catholics across our country to enter into the period of the two weeks leading up to the Fourth of July with a strong focus on prayer, education and reflection on our first freedom, freedom of religion. Please contact these two websites for information: www.dioceseofcleveland.org/freedom and www.fortnight4freedom.org. Father Librado shall be making the mission appeal for the Diocese of Sorsogon in the Philippines. Please be generous to the mission. The funds raised will be used for the following projects: 1. The education of 130 seminarians (80 in High School, 40 in College, 10 in Theology). Most parents of these young boys are poor and cannot afford to give them a priestly education, which has become more costly through the years. The Province of Sorsogon is one of the poorest in the region of Bicol, which is often hit by natural calamities such as typhoons and volcanic eruptions. 2. For pastoral programs, which focus on the formation of our lay men, and women, who are leaders in the Village Chapel Pastoral Councils. These lay leaders need continuing training so that they can effectively help the Parish Priests in the implementation of the Diocesan Ecclesial and Evangelization Program, which is intended for the economic, political, cultural and religious development of the people. Please remember these individuals, who have been called to the priesthood in your daily prayers: Sunday, June 29 th Bishop Richard Lennon Monday, June 30 th Samuel Martinez Tuesday, July 1 st Patrick McCarthy Wednesday, July 2 nd Luke McNeill Thursday, July 3 rd Robert McWilliams Friday, July 4 th Joseph Menkhaus Saturday, July 5 th Jeremy Merzweiler Sunday, July 6 th Bishop A. Edward Pevec Also, please remember the Religious Teachers Filippini (MPF) STEWARDSHIP In today s Gospel we hear Peter proclaim who his friend and teacher really is when he says to Jesus: You are the Christ, the Son of the living God. Peter experienced many ups and downs as a follower of Jesus. He could be impetuous, impatient, fearful and even unfaithful. After Peter had boasted of his fidelity to the Lord, he adamantly denied him three times. It seemed that Peter had burned his bridges, but Jesus lovingly rebuilt them and restored Peter to service. Peter would become the chief steward of the Gospel in the early church. Peter had failed Jesus, but with Jesus, failure is not the end. Reflect this week on the times you have failed Jesus. Were you open to Jesus forgiveness? Did it make you a better steward of the Gospel? A Message from our Parish Nurse Heidi Madsen When is it OK for a baby to wear sunscreen? Sunscreen is ok to use on babies 6 months or older. Younger babies should use other forms of sun protection. Consider these guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Food & Drug Administration and the American Cancer Society. For babies 6 months of older liberally use sunscreen. Also, avoid exposing your baby to the sun during peak hours generally 10 am to 2 pm and dress him or her in protective clothing, a hat with a brim and sunglasses. For babies younger than 6 months Keep him or her out of direct sunlight. Protect your baby from sun exposure by dressing him or her in protective clothing, a hat with a brim and sunglasses. When choosing baby sunscreen, pick a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends using a SPF of 30 or more. Apply sunscreen generously and reapply every two hours or more often if your baby is spending time in the water or perspiring. Use a sunscreen that contains only inorganic filters such as zinc oxide & titanium to avoid irritation to your child s skin & eyes. Remember, just a few serious sunburns can increase your baby s risk of skin cancer later in life. Taking simple steps now can go a long way toward protecting your baby from the risks of sun exposure.

Karen s Corner Did you know that the Gospel of Luke is sometimes called the gospel of prayer? That is because Luke, more than other gospels, tells us of Jesus in prayer many times. Luke gives us examples of Jesus praying in almost every kind of situation: Jesus prays when he is joy-filled, he prays when he is in agony, he prays with others around and he prays when he is alone at night, withdrawn from all human contact. He prays high on a mountain, on a sacred place and he prays on the level plane, where ordinary life happens. This lesson isn t lost on the apostles. They sense that Jesus real depth and power are drawn from his prayer. They know that what makes him so special, so unlike any other religious figure, is that he is linked at some deep place to a power outside of this world. And they want this for themselves. That s why they approached Jesus and asked him: Lord, teach us to pray! What the disciples sensed was what they wanted for their own lives, which was the depth and graciousness of his soul. The power they admired and wanted was Jesus power to love and forgive his enemies rather than embarrass and crush them. What they wanted was his power to renounce life in self-sacrifice, even while retaining the enviable capacity to enjoy the pleasures of life without guilt. What they wanted was Jesus power to be big hearted, to love beyond his own tribe, to love poor and rich alike, to live inside of charity, joy, peace, patience, goodness, long-suffering, fidelity, mildness, and chastity, despite everything within life that influences against these virtues. They saw that he connected to a deep source through prayer, they saw it and they wanted that connection for themselves. We want this in our own lives, too. And we know that the only way we can attain this is through prayer, accessing that depth that resides inside the deepest parts of our souls and beyond our souls! We know that the route to that depth lies in journeying inward, in silence, through both the chaos and the peace, the pain and the quiet that comes to us when we have courage enough to still ourselves to listen to that still, small voice within us. Prayer is a journey, and God wants to know us deeply, but that can only happen when we take the time to pray! Spend some time with Scripture and in quiet and see where our Lord will lead you! You won t be sorry, I promise! See you soon! Karen DID YOU KNOW that during World War II, when raw materials were scarce, 33% of all paper was being recycled? Thanks to our efforts we earned $47.70 in May from River Valley Paper Company. We also saved 40.55 trees, 16,695 gallons of water and heated 2.39 homes for six months thru our recycling efforts! Our Parish Picnic Improvement Raffle tickets ready for distribution. We are asking everyone to pick up their tickets to help us defray the cost of mailing them. Tickets are in alphabetical order in the boxes on the radiators in church. Tickets may be picked up at the west doors of the church (School Side)
