FROM THE TEE BOX A Few Thoughts from Our Pastor From the Tee Box! December 6-7, 2014 The Second Sunday of Advent The Second Week of Advent Reflection for Sunday Week II (Based on the First Reading of the Day, Isaiah 40:1-11) Comfort, give comfort to my people, says your God... A Story- Within the context of this scripture passage, one of the places where I find the most comfort every year is at the top of a mountain. I try to go annually to a place like Colorado, Utah, or Washington State. Backpacking and climbing upward to, for example, 10,000 feet elevation is no easy task, especially with a 30 pound pack on your back. But when you get there it s definitely worth it. You look out at the majesty of God s handiwork and say to yourself, you re gonna be alright. The same God who created all of this is watching over you. You re definitely in good hands. A Thought- I mentioned at the end of last week s reflection that the season of Advent can be a time of slowing down. It can also be a time of going back to the basics: allowing God to give us comfort and empowering us to bring comfort to others. Truly, most of life is not lived on the mountain tops. It s lived in the valleys. It s lived in the challenges, the difficult moments, and the tasks of day to day living. This is, however, where we encounter the grace of God s presence. Let this Advent be a time of remembering this promise and bringing it to others. Sincerely, Fr. Trey Nelson Pastor The Word for the Week is COMFORT Monday where in your life and about what do you need to be comforted right now? Tuesday is there a part of your life that you are being called to straighten out? Wednesday think of one person in your life who could benefit from the comfort that you could give. Thursday what for you is one of the most comforting passages of scripture? Friday looking back on the week, where do you need the Lord s forgiveness? Saturday have you been able to identify one way in which you can bring comfort to people on a daily basis?

We want to share some highlights of the report with you. During the year, the St. Jude Conference members visited with 484 families consisting of 1,449 individuals resulting in assistance provided in the form of food, financial assistance for electricity, water or rent, or vouchers for use at the St. Vincent de Paul stores. In addition, we handled 527 telephone calls from persons seeking help. Your donations of $55,502.28 plus an additional amount from other sources of $4,108.89, enabled the Conference to use $40,097.18 to provide the above described forms of assistance. In-kind donations of food and toys from the St. Jude School staff, students and their families with a value of $10,705.00 allowed the Conference members to provide 596 individuals last November and December with holiday food boxes, turkeys and toys for children. The Conference provided $4,000.00 for the St. Vincent de Paul Society operations of the Special Works of the Diocese Council: the homeless shelters, the SVDP pharmacy, SVDP dental clinic, SVDP stores, and other activities. The Conference contributed $1,791.45 to the Diocesan Council and $800.00 for a foreign twinning. Our operating expenses consisting of the telephone service and for stamps totaled $743.41. As a result our cash balance as of September 30, 2014 was $15,944.76. A good start for the new year. The St. Jude Conference members without the use of any of the above described donated funds prepared and served dinner four times at the downtown St. Vincent de Paul Shelters by providing a dinner meal to approximately 280 persons. Several hundred of our neighbors living within St. Jude Parish boundaries received some form of assistance through the St. Jude Conference of the St. Vincent DePaul Society during the past fiscal year. The members of the St. Jude Conference are all volunteers and stewards of your donated funds used in providing assistance to the less fortunate who live within the parish boundaries of St. Jude. A big special thanks to all who contribute in any way to the St. Jude St. Vincent de Paul Conference and help make the assistance possible. We also request your prayers for the persons that receive assistance. Recently on Saturday, November 22, 74 families consisting of 240 individuals received a turkey and box of food for Thanksgiving. Plans are underway to help more than 120 families with food and toys for Christmas on Saturday, December 20 at the Parish Hall. Your donation of any amount dropped in an envelope in the collection at Mass or dropped at the Parish Office is always appreciated. These donations are used for our neighbors living within St. Jude Parish boundaries. Checks should be noted for St. Jude Conference, St. Vincent DePaul. Donations of cans of meat, fruit and vegetables in the baskets in the Church are added to the St. Jude Food Pantry to use to distribute food every week to families in need in our area. Please consider becoming a member of the St. Jude conference and help us provide help to the poor.
