On Sept. 15, 1942, Chief Finn received the Medal of Honor from Adm. Chester W. Nimitz, commander in chief of the Pacific Fleet, in a ceremony aboard the carrier Enterprise at Pearl Harbor. Admiral Nimitz cited Chief Finn for his magnificent courage in the face of almost certain death. John William Finn was born on July 23, 1909, in Los Angeles County, the son of a plumber. He dropped out of school to join the Navy at age 17. He was the oldest of the 97 Medal of Honor recipients still living. Fair winds and following seas John W. Finn. Thank you. John W. Finn, the last survivor of the 15 Navy men who received the Medal of Honor for heroism during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, died Thursday at a nursing home in Chula Vista, Calif. Commodore Bill Mottinger Vice Commodore LaVon Plumlee Memorial Day, Flag Day, Fathers Day and the First Day of Summer all signal the mid-point of the year. The first two remind us of our nation s past and of those who brought the United States of America to its prestigious position among the nations of the world. Fathers Day both reminds us of our family heritage and the responsibilities inherent in parenthood, as did Mothers Day. Advice from the Vice: It has again been a very busy and fabulous month for me as your Vice Commodore. It was great seeing so many of you at our Brunch celebrating our Mothers. The day was perfect and attendance was great as usual for another NYCLB fivestar Brunch. Tamara Carbone s special touches of setting this up were again perfect. Next and very important were our two NYCLB Omelet chefs: S/C Bill Plumlee and Tony Carbone. Our omelets were again done to perfection. Cici Frazier was in charge of our beverages Thanks Cici. Last, our thanks to Jr. S/C Ron Warren and all those that helped set up, etc. I m sure I have missed lots of thanks to all our volunteers. Memorial Day Ceremony: We have yet another event coming up this month: our Memorial Day Ceremony will be held on Sunday, May 30th. The day will begin at 9:30 a.m. with a NOT TO BE MISSED ceremony coordinated by our Chaplain, Wes Sullivan. This will be followed by a Potluck Brunch. This brunch will be different than last month. We are featuring YOUR Potluck Specialties. Let Tamara Carbone know your specialty and what you would like to bring for brunch so that she can coordinate the menu and have plenty of food. Friday Nite Social: As usual, Becky Rietdyk has been doing a fabulous job for our Friday Nite Socials along with Penny Farmer. Have you been to one of our Friday Nite Socials lately? Last Friday the potluck was again outstanding as usual and we had another tremendous turnout. Hope to see you next Friday starting at 6 p.m. at our Clubhouse for great food and great conversation with your members. Don t miss Fridays. June Social: This past month was our Mother s Day celebration so we can t overlook the fabulous NYCLB Fathers. Let s join in to celebrate this on Sunday, June 13th, starting at 11:30 a.m. with another of our Omelet Bar specials. We will have a special program devoted to the special men in our lives. New Member of the Vice Team: I m happy to announce Sara Zak has agreed to assume the vacant Beverage Chairman for our NYCLB Vice Team. I look forward to working closely with her to make this a success along with Tamara Carbone, Becky Rietdky, and Penny Farmer -- our team effort. Welcome aboard! If you are interested in joining with Sara to assist in this endeavor, please contact Sara. The First Day of Summer not only brings memories of adventurous outdoor activities of past years; it also reinvigorates the anticipation of time away from work or school as we engage our minds and bodies once again in simply enjoying being outdoors. Watching the sunset over Alamitos Bay on Friday evenings is relaxing and sometimes is awesome. Dining under the stars with fellow NYCLB members is enjoyable, whether at Friday potlucks or on the water somewhere. At this half-year gone half-year-to-go point, it s time to check our Club inventory of resources, our people-power. In order to continue the level of activity Club members have become accustomed to, more of us are needed as volunteers in several areas. As Commodore, I encourage and expect more Club members to take their turn on the fore-deck. Opportunities abound at every event, for preparation and teardown. With the summer activities ahead, I urge you to contact Bridge and Staff officers and committee chairs to really take your place as crew members of NYCLB, in addition to being Club members. In addition to the visible social and racing activities of NYCLB, several other committees have been at work. The Long Range Planning Committee (LRPC) continues to evaluate facility needs, exploring possibilities and coordinating activities with city and state agencies. S/C Dick DeRusha continues to chair the LRPC. Director Sara Zak and Rear Commodore Vic Ray II were recently appointed to serve on that committee. With the guidance of Bill Moore, Chair of the By-Laws Committee, the organizational and guiding documents of the Club are being reviewed and updated to more accurately describe what the Club is now and how it may be more effectively governed. Proposed changes to the By-Laws will be presented to the Board of Directors and subsequently published to the membership. Now, let s haul anchor, hoist sails and sail a true course to making membership in NYCLB both exciting now and memorable in days to come. Thanks to all those who keep things sailing smoothly. The cruise out to Catalina had only 3 Boats participating due to the gale warnings posted for the weekend. Roger, our Cruise Director, said he will try to put another cruise out to Catalina soon if there is any interest. This is being written prior to the Memorial Day weekend. I know that all will participate in their own way in remembering and honoring our fallen heroes. The long dock has been reserved the weekend of June 1113th and a Father's Day Brunch is planned for the 13th. Please see announcements and let Roger know if you need space at the long dock. Our Friday night pot luck get-togethers have been growing in size and it s a great opportunity to enjoy the camaraderie of your fellow members. As the days grow longer and the weather grows warmer, please consider joining us. You have been missed. Raising the Flag! What a great Patriotic Season: Memorial Day, May 31st; Flag Day, June 14th; Independence Day, July 4th! Three months Three Patriotic Holidays. Of all peoples, we who have served must take time to remember why we served! On Memorial Day, the former Decoration Day, we remember the soldiers of all wars that have given the ultimate sacrifice to defend our freedoms and protect our nation from all enemies, domestic and foreign. We do not want to forget those who did not return, our POWs and MIAs. We most likely will never know the sacrifices they made for our freedoms! On June 14th, a little remembered holiday to remember the Flag of the United States of America. We have seen it desecrated in times past, but most often now it is displayed proudly. My neighbor has a flag in his front yard. He told me that he will not remove it until all our soldiers come home. He erected it on 9/12/01. He has had to replace the flag several times because of the weather and wind taking its toll. July 4th: It is more, much more than fireworks and picnics. It is a celebration of a grand experiment to let people govern themselves via the ballot box and representatives rather than by Kings and Queens. Can we imagine the sacrifice that the signers of that Declaration of Independence suffered? They pledged their fortunes and their lives to allow this experiment to happen. One of Something to think about: "It is curious that physical courage should be so common in the world, and moral courage the often misrepresented core beliefs of these men was that God had endowed men with inalienable rights. These so rare."- Mark Twain rights have not been bestowed upon us by our Lee Melody Fleet Captain government, but have been bestowed by God Himself. The government only assures that these rights are observed, recognized and enforced. Your service contributed to the extension of this great experiment! Rear Commodore Vic Ray Tony Rietdyk S/C, Race Director Now hear this! Holy seagull droppings Batman! Can it be that another month has gone by again? Where does the time go? I m afraid to blink lest summer buzz by and I ll have missed it. This will be short as I have been away from the water almost the entire month of May. Diane s teenage niece is moving in with us after high school graduation so she can be closer to Saddleback College and so I ve been give the boot from the spare room that I took over and converted into an office when our son headed off to the University of California and their Marine Corps ROTC program. I ve been busy building an office into our loft and restoring the bat cave to a bedroom. The good news is that we ll have a live-in beagle baby sitter which will allow Diane and I to spend more time on the water in theory at least. By the time this publishes, Memorial Day will have come and gone and hopefully many of you will have attended the Club s observance of this most important (in my opinion) national holiday. As veterans, we generally do not need to be reminded about the meaning of this holiday and this year it means just a little more to me. A couple of months ago, a co-worker lost his only son, a Marine, in action in Afghanistan. His son was the same age as mine. If that doesn t make one stop and think, nothing will. I look across to his still empty desk and think about what this Memorial Day must mean to him. I cannot even begin to imagine. That is all! We had a great turnout for our Armed Forces Day Race Saturday May 15th, twenty boats showed up for three different classes. We started two spinnaker and one nonspinnaker class with "A" Spinnaker having ten boats on the starting line and Non-Spinnaker started with eight. The conditions were excellent at the start and the winds really started howling toward the end of the race. The courses were some what long but all boats finished before 1500. After the race we had a no host bar and snacks at our facilities for the racers. Trophies were given out to the winners, see below. I would like to thank the following members for their help on the race committee boat and at the club Camile D'Esopo, Cici Frazier, Bob Gillispie and Becky Rietdyk and our new Bar Manager Sara Zack was working the bar.
