St. Rose of Lima Church 312 Ridgedale Avenue East Hanover, New Jersey 07936 www.saintroseoflimachurch.org The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ June 3, 2018 As we gather this weekend to celebrate the Feast of Corpus Christi, it s a good time to contemplate some of the joys and challenges of our beloved parish. Through the grace of God our Masses are well attended with dedicated ushers, readers, extraordinary ministers and servers. Jeanne Marie and Diego work hard to provide good and varied music. Our sound system is good and our renovations have made our worship space beautiful. Fr. Matthew and I if I must say, strive to serve a beautiful Mass. We strive to keep our homilies short and with a good message. Our church of course is the place where we celebrate all life s events. The Baptisms, the First Holy Communions, the Confirmations, the Weddings, the Funeral Masses, the Confessions, the Daily Masses and the weekend Masses are the sacramental gifts which keep our faith strong and empower us to be faithful Catholics. Fr. Matthew and I have chatted recently about some of the distractions and honestly, the bad habits that distract the worshipping community: Arriving late to Mass is a distraction to the worshipping congregation and shows a lack of respect for the sacred liturgy. Loud talking before Mass (most especially the 5:30pm Mass) makes it difficult for people to pray or prepare themselves for Mass. People texting at Mass is inappropriate. I shutter when I see people chewing gum at Mass. How does someone receive Holy Communion with gum in their mouth? It s very important after receiving Holy Communion to have time for private prayer. Some people exit immediately after receiving Holy Communion and thus don t make time to thank Jesus for the precious gift of the Holy Eucharist. Mass ends with the final blessing. However, the congregation generally shouldn t leave the church until the priest has reached the foyer. Fr. Matthew and I walk down the aisle pretty quickly and there are usually 15/20 people running out the door ahead of us. Despite these irritants I realize that most people who come to Mass come on time, don t leave before the priest, don t chew gum, and don t talk loudly before or during Mass. I know people appreciate a quiet time before Mass to pray and prepare themselves. Sometimes life delays us with coming to Mass. Sometimes we forget ourselves and become excited chatting with people. Let us look to the Blessed Sacrament and realize we need the peace and quiet of our hearts so we can receive the direction and strength we need to do God s will. Father Owen

Everyone who attended was so loving and kind and it was very helpful to hear all our stories of the loved ones we lost and share pictures and memories. Father Owen is truly a man blessed by God to help the bereaved. He always knew what to say to make us feel better about a situation and how to relate to God. He happily answered any questions we had and I always left feeling better. If you lost a loved one I highly recommend this group as it is very loving and caring. EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTER Miss Casey's class let their four butterflies go this week! Before we sent them off, we got to watch them eat and drink from a piece of fruit. We ended our unit by reviewing the life cycle of a butterfly. Students also learned more about the ocean. They learned about the many different color goldfish and used goldfish snacks to practice counting. We also got to paint seashells. Our class ended the week learning about Memorial Day; we learned about why we celebrate and how we celebrate. Students got to make one red, white and blue fireworks. Miss Donna's class had a busy week celebrating summer birthdays and letting their butterflies go free! They observed the whole process of a caterpillar turning into a butterfly. All five of their caterpillars made a chrysalis and turned into a butterfly. The children even got to see the butterflies colorful wings all curled up in the chrysalis. What a fun and interesting experience! Miss Lorie s class also observed the life cycle of the butterfly. We released five butterflies into our playground area and watched them fly away. We also did a fun experiment The children were asked to wrap up a friend with toilet paper to resemble the caterpillar forming into its chrysalis. Next, the children pretended to be butterflies breaking out of their chrysalis. We all had fun watching our friends emerge from the pupa stage. Then we switched partners so everyone would have a turn to break free! We have also been practicing for our Moving Up Ceremony that will take place on June 8 th. Miss Evelyn s class continued to observe and record how our five caterpillars are growing and changing. It was exciting to see when they transformed into chrysalides. From reading The Very Hungry Caterpillar, we know that exciting things are happening and we can follow the stages of the butterfly by following what is happening in the book. We also released our butterflies at the end of the week into the beautiful sunshine. Our class also had fun becoming a caterpillar, a chrysalis and finally a butterfly!
