UNIVERSITY BAPTIST CHURCH WORSHIP OF GOD IN CHRIST July 23, 2017 11:00 a.m. PRELUDE Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken, He Whose Word Cannot Be Broken... Langston LIGHTING THE CANDLES (We light the two candles on the communion table to remind us of the oneness of Christ with God and with humankind.) OPENING THE BIBLE (We open the Bible to remind us that God speaks to the people through the Holy Word.) CALL TO WORSHIP Leader: O God, our Creator, we gather this morning to lift our praises before you. People: Leader: People: Leader: People: Fill us with your spirit as we sing songs of joy and wonder. The world in which we live is unpredictable and ever-changing, But your presence and steadfast love remain with us from generation to generation. Wherever your spirit leads us, through any wilderness we may encounter, May we confidently follow your leading with hope in your presence. Amen. ** HYMN In the Midst of New Dimensions (see insert)... JUDSON

** INVOCATION WELCOME (At this time, please sign and pass the red fellowship book located at the left end of the pew. When everyone has signed, return the book. Take this opportunity to note the names of the members and visitors seated on the same pew with you so you may greet them after the service.) MISSIONS MOMENT HYMN 474 We Are Climbing Jacob s Ladder (stanza 1)... JACOB S LADDER (As the Congregation sings, all children are invited to come to the front for the Children s Sermon.) CHILDREN S SERMON (At the conclusion of the Children s Sermon, all children, kindergarten through grade two, are invited to attend Children s Church.) PSALM LESSON... Psalm 139:1-12, 23-24 1 O Lord, you have searched me and known me. 2 You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from far away. 3 You search out my path and my lying down, and are acquainted with all my ways. 4 Even before a word is on my tongue, O Lord, you know it completely. 5 You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me. 6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is so high that I cannot attain it. 7 Where can I go from your spirit? Or where can I flee from your presence? 8 If I ascend to heaven, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. 9 If I take the wings of the morning and settle at the farthest limits of the sea, 10 even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me fast. 11 If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light around me become night, 12 even the darkness is not dark to you; the night is as bright as the day, for darkness is as light to you. 23 Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my thoughts. 24 See if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. Leader: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God! ** HYMN 74 O God, Our Help in Ages Past... ST. ANNE OLD TESTAMENT LESSON... Genesis 28:10-19a 10 Jacob left Beer-sheba and went toward Haran. 11 He came to a certain place and stayed there for the night, because the sun had set. Taking one of the

stones of the place, he put it under his head and lay down in that place. 12 And he dreamed that there was a ladder set up on the earth, the top of it reaching to heaven; and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. 13 And the Lord stood beside him and said, I am the Lord, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie I will give to you and to your offspring; 14 and your offspring shall be like the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south; and all the families of the earth shall be blessed in you and in your offspring. 15 Know that I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you. 16 Then Jacob woke from his sleep and said, Surely the Lord is in this place and I did not know it! 17 And he was afraid, and said, How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven. 18 So Jacob rose early in the morning, and he took the stone that he had put under his head and set it up for a pillar and poured oil on the top of it. 19 He called that place Bethel. Leader: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God! ** HYMN 458 Nearer, My God, to Thee... BETHANY MORNING PRAYER ANTHEM Who At My Door Is Standing... K.
