FYI: July 19, 2015 The Four Realities I recently had a meeting with a young woman about her spiritual life. When I mentioned the four realities, she looked at me like I had a turnip growing out my ear. The four realities are life, death, heaven and hell. Life is a gift from God. Human life is the summit of God s creation. He creates each and every one of us purely and simply because He loves us. We are spiritual, physical, psychological and emotional beings. Each person is created in the image and likeness of God. We have a body, mind, soul and strength. God graces us with intelligence, reason and free will. Our life is a gift from God. What we use our life for is our gift to God! Death is as we know the cessation of life. Doctors and scientists think that death occurs when the brain stops functioning or when one flat-lines. Others think that physical life ends when the heart stops beating. Medical people may offer multiple organ failure as a definition of physical death. Some people go to great lengths to deny that death exists. We hear and read that someone passed away or passed on or simply passed. I was in Walmart one day shopping and overheard a woman say she had lost her husband. I don t think he wandered off and was in a different aisle. He died. (or in some cases, he escaped!) Death is the great equalizer. Each and every person will one day die. Or as I have been known to say, one day each and every person will be in the center aisle of church and the Paschal candle will burn for them. Death like life has a quality to it. St. Francis of Assisi called death, Sister Death It was how he lived his life that he saw death not as something to be feared but as a welcome transition to the life with God. Heaven is our reward, our true home, our welcoming into the presence of God where there is no more fear, no pain and we bask in the light of God forever. To get to heaven takes great work on our behalf and great mercy on the part of God. In order to get to heaven we have to face the reality of who we are. Have we been true to the promises we have made to God? Have we helped others on their journey to God? Have we been people of prayer, penance, sacrifice and alms-giving? As Jesus tells us the way to paradise is narrow and challenging. Hell is the other possibility after death. Hell is a place of complete aloneness from God and his grace. It has been described as cold and icy, sort of like Buffalo in February or filled with fire and brimstone. The way to hell is vast and wide. Its direction is paved in selfishness, relativism, minimalism and especially pride. As we look around, how many of us have at times been consumed by the attitude that I am the center of the universe. Or it s all about me. Or You owe it to me Or What s the least amount I must do? I honestly believe that we live in a day and time where we as Catholics need to make more and more use of the Sacrament of Reconciliation. We need to make us of this tremendous Gift of Jesus. This saving grace where Jesus through the words of the priest not only forgives our sins but forgets our sins! Remember there are three things necessary for the forgiveness of sins: Sin, Sorrow for Sin and the Purpose of Amendment. Brothers and Sisters, while we have time, let us do good! ~Fr. Dan Hearing devices are available for those who need them. Please see an usher and sit in the center of the church. That is where the devices work the best. The collection for the 12th & 19th will be posted next weekend. The second collection is for St. Mark Outreach. 5
