Formation Classes Registration for 2018-2019 Formation classes will start August 18-19 after all Masses. Classes start Sunday, September 16, 2018. WEEKLY MIRACLE This week marks the beginning of a kind of liturgical detour. We have been listening to Saint Mark s Gospel during this liturgical year (Year B). Today we begin to hear a long section from John s Gospel, starting with the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves and fishes. This miracle story is a prelude to the Lord s statements that we will begin hearing in a few weeks, in which Jesus refers to himself as the bread of life. Each week we witness a miracle at Mass. We do not see a multiplication of loaves before us. What our eyes of faith allow us to see is the miracle of the transformation of common elements bread and wine into the Lord s Body and Blood. Once we have received the Lord, the multiplication begins, for in the Eucharist we are strengthened to multiply our efforts to feed the poor, shelter the homeless, and bring comfort to the despairing. It is a fun and rewarding way to pass on the faith to our children and to deepen your own faith along the way. If you are interested or need more information call Terry in the Parish office at 293-0088. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Last Wednesday, the greatest pilgrimage in our tradition ended with the feast of Saint James at his shrine in Compostela, Spain. Every year, as many as a hundred thousand persons walk a portion of the medieval way of the pilgrim, earning the right to wear the scallop shell symbol of this journey of faith. In legend, this city on the northern coast of Spain is the final resting place of the apostle, and the full name of the cathedral is Saint James of the Field of Stars. There is a tradition that Saint James the Great preached there. In the Roman Catholic tradition, the pilgrimage, like any procession, is a symbol, life s journey distilled, a powerful sign of our journey toward a certain goal. The perils of the road, the support of companions, the contemplative slower pace of life, have the potential to transform and renew the pilgrims in ways that last a lifetime. Along the way, the distinctions between rich and poor fall away, and everyone shares humble rustic food and stops for the night in hostels or under the stars. After a long walk, the experience of entering through the great doors into the vast cathedral filled with incense, light, and song is a foretaste of heaven. The pilgrims often say that their whole lives are redirected toward that moment of entry into the heavenly Jerusalem. The most memorable feature of the cathedral is called the botofumeiro, an incense burner on pulleys and chains that sweeps through the cathedral in immense circles, swirling clouds of sweet -smelling incense around the vast nave. www.johnxxiiicc.org Saint John XXIII Catholic Community The Gospel According to Mark We left off last week with the woman who had been enduring a flow of blood for twelve years. She comes up behind Jesus, who is pressed in by the crowd, and she touched his mantel. Mark also has her say, If I may just touch even his mantel, I shall be healed. The word may implies permission assumed by her faith. Immediately the fountain of her blood dried up and she knew in her body that she was cured of her affliction. Jesus, feeling the power going out of him, turns around in the crowd and says, Who touched my mantel? Mark has the disciples say, You see the crowd pressing upon you and you ask Who touched me? Mark uses the word disciples to include all early Christians in this lack of understanding. Jesus looks around to see the woman. And the woman, afraid and trembling and knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before him, just as the demoniac and Jairus did, and tells him the whole truth. What he says to her reflects on the word may used above. Recognizing her faith, Jesus says, Daughter, your faith has healed you, go in peace and be cured of your affliction. As mentioned last week, anything she touched before being healed also became unclean. Her telling Jesus the whole truth implies she probably made many others unclean; by being in a large crowd she most definitely would have touched many. As Jesus was still speaking, people come from the house of the leader of the synagogue, saying, Your daughter has died; why trouble the teacher? Jesus hears the remark and says to Jairus, Do not be afraid, only have faith. He brings Peter, James and John and they come to the house where there is a commotion of weeping and lamenting. Jesus says to them, Why do you make a commotion and weep? The child has not died, but rather sleeps. In the time of the prophets, the belief in a rewarded afterlife began to develop. These prophets would use the word sleep to mean physical death. Mark is reflecting this here. The mourners ridicule Jesus, so he throws them out and takes the father and mother and those who were with him, and goes in where the child was. And seizing the child s hand he says to her, Talitha koum which means, Little girl, I say to you, arise, and immediately the little girl arose, and walked about. As you can imagine, they were greatly astonished. Jesus charges them not to tell anyone and to give her something to eat. Fr.
