Knights in Action Newsletter August 2016 Volume 1, Issue 6 Knights of Columbus Pope John Paul the Great Council 13784 IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY OUR PRINCIPLES Charity Unity Fraternity Patriotism August is the month we celebrate the Immaculate Heart of Mary. When we practice devotion to the Immaculate Heart, we venerate not only the physical heart of Mary, but everything the heart symbolizes. Veneration of the Immaculate Heart is the veneration for the whole person of Mary. We know that Mary is Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows, the Immaculate Conception, Mother of God, Spouse of the Holy Ghost, Mother of all men, Mediatrix of all Graces. In the devotion to the Immaculate Heart, all these titles and many others are combined. This all-embracing devotion has been saved for wide-spread attention in our own day. The origin of the devotion, however, can be traced back several centuries. In some ways, devotion to the Immaculate Heart prepared the way for devotion to the Sacred Heart, just as Mary prepares the way for Jesus. Until the middle of the 17th century, devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary was unknown, except to a few privileged souls. In 1641, St. John Eudes began preaching devotion to the Hearts of Jesus and Mary. In 1638, he published his Devotion to the Most Pure Heart and Holy Name of Mary. Wood, Sr. IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY (continued from page 1) The Feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary was first celebrated in 1648. About 30 years later, Our Lord appeared to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque and asked for devotion to His Sacred Heart. By 1680 devotion to the Immaculate Heart was widely known. In 1839, Our Lady gave great impetus to the devotion when she appeared to St. Catherine Laboure and instructed her to introduce the Miraculous Medal. As we know, one side of the medal represents the Heart of Jesus and the Heart of Mary, side by side. No words were needed on the medal, as directed by the Blessed Mother. The two hearts told the whole story. At Blangy, in 1840, Our Lady gave Sister Bisqueyburu the Green Scapular. The Green Scapular is known as The Badge of The Immaculate Heart, and one prays "Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us now and at the hour of our death." At Fatima in 1917, Our Lady told Lucia she was to remain on earth to help establish devotion to the Immaculate Heart. A few moments later the children saw in front of Our Lady a heart surrounded by thorns. This understood this to be the Heart of Mary pierced by sins and desiring reparation. After Lucia was in the convent, Our Lady appeared to her and asked for the devotion of the Five First Saturdays in reparation to the Immaculate Heart. 3 YEAR TRUSTEE SK Ivol Sexton 2 YEAR TRUSTEE SK Kenn White 1 YEAR TRUSTEE Albino M De Castro DEGREE SCHEDULE FOR DISTRICT 3 ADMISSIONS DEGREE (1 st ) August 17 th Fr. FROM THE GRAND KNIGHT The new Fraternal Year has started out with a bang and I hope you are excited about what s happening as much as I am. With all that we did last Fraternal Year, I hope we can build on that and provide even more this year. Right off the bat, just six days into the new year, we held our Officer Installation in which all of the positions are filled, except for the Deputy Grand Knight. I look forward to someone stepping up for that position soon. Looking to the future of this Council and throughout this year I think we will be more involved with the Church and the community than we have in the past. Just last month, July, we held our first 5 th Sunday Rosary and will hold 3 more this year in October, January and April. This not only counts as an activity toward Star Council, but it enlightens non-knight parishioners on the importance of praying the Rosary as well as providing a small insight of how the Knights get involved. There are many events which we can be a huge part of and hopefully we will. Here are some of my thoughts about what we can accomplish this year: Special Olympics since becoming a member of this Council we have always been involved and I hope to continue that this year. Keep Christ in Christmas. We have the Christmas cards which we will sell, but there are other ways to grow in this area as well. During Lent we will again, sponsor the 40 Cans for Lent as this was a huge success. Feed the hungry I hope to set up a group to go to a food kitchen and help serve the homeless. March 4 Life we will have a bus for the Parish this year which will take those wishing to attend to Washington DC for this huge event. Of course our Basketball Free Throw and Soccer Challenge will be run again. A Fall Bazaar in October. We raised over $400 last April and I am hoping for a better showing this time around. The Baby Bottle Campaign went very well and even Fr. Rod has welcomed us to do this again. We are looking to have a Coats for Kids drive which is a KofC sponsored event. There are essay and poster contests for our Parish youth to take part in, which I think we should very much get involved in this. Wreaths Across America this year it falls on December 17 th, and we can participate at the Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk. Maybe a Blood Drive at St. Luke during a Saturday afternoon. I would really like to visit some elderly people who are not able to rake their yard of leaves or mow their lawns and do that for them. These are just a few of the many things we can be a part of, most of which don t require any funding, and for those that do, I think we will have a very rigorous fundraising year donut sales, football frenzy, bazaar, and the list goes on. I ask each of my Brother Knights to look at where you can get involved. I certainly know you can t get involved in every event, although that would be nice, but I ask you to when you can. Please send me some of your ideas on how we can make an impact. Send to nzmmrw@gmail.com or at 757-675-7504. GOD Bless each of you! 4

OUR SHINING STARS KNIGHT OF THE YEAR SK Christian Brousseau Our Knight of the Year exemplifies what a Knight should be. He is a dedicated Catholic gentleman. Young men his age are normally involved with other less desirable things like drinking, drugs, etc., but our Knight of the Year is matured beyond the normal 19-year old and generates enthusiasm within the Council and within any group he is associated with. He is eager to gain more knowledge and is always volunteering for whatever comes up and normally ends up taking charge. SK Christian is certainly deserving of the title as Council 13784 Knight of the Year! FAMILY OF THE YEAR The Fritz Family The Fritz family is our Family of the Year based on their holistic dedication to the Church, the Knights and the community. They selfishly give day in and day out and never run out of energy. Both, Art and Hazel, are Extra-Ordinary Eucharistic Ministers for the Church and Hazel is actually the coordinator for this Ministry. She is also President of the Ladies Auxiliary as well as a Life Teen Core Team Member. Art is an active member of the Knights of Columbus and has served as Treasurer, Grand Knight, Trustee and recently stepped up as the Financial Secretary due to the Council s Financial Secretary stepping down un-expectantly. Their grandson, Christian, is also a very active member of the Knights and became a Sir Knight within 14 months of joining the Council, a huge accomplishment. Christian is as active as his grandparents as he is one of the leaders of the Church Youth Group, Life Teen Core Team Member and is the Warden in our Council. This family is active in the community as well as the Special Olympics. As the Grand Knight last year, Art s leadership lead the Council to reach Star Council (which is an achievement not reached by many Councils). Truly a stand-out family, well deserving of recognition as Family of the Year! 6

OUR SHINING STARS YOUNG MAN OF THE YEAR Nestor Guardado Our Young Man of the Year is a very active member of St. Luke s Church, his school and the community. He serves as a Lecturer, cleans the Church, is a Life Teen Core Member and fills in where asked for other Church activities, including the food and clothing drive for the migrant workers on the Eastern Shore, and teaches religious class for children. He assists the homeless and helps at the Judao-Christian Outreach Center to feed the hungry. He volunteers wherever he can because it is his desire to improve the lives of others. He plays soccer in his off-time and maintains a 3.0 average at school. Truly an active and mature young man well deserving of the title Young Man of the Year! YOUNG WOMAN OF THE YEAR Maria Meza Our Young Woman of the Year manages her time very well, even though she maintains a full schedule of activities. She teaches children s religious classes, serves as an Altar Server, Life Teen Member, and helps with the cleaning of the Church. She is a volunteer at the city Aquarium, attended the 2016 Mount 2000 Retreat, as well as traveled to Pennsylvania during Pope Frances visit to the United States. She participates at her school in the Spanish Club, Math Club, Haiti, Latin and French Clubs as well as the Prom Committee. She has been recognized by receiving the Sheriff s Award, Attendance Award, Star Student as well as recognition from Father Rod for her activities at St. Luke s Church. She provided face-painting during the Parish Picnic, takes part in feeding the hungry and participated in the Salud Campaign. A busy young woman who places others above herself and strives to live God s teachings. 7
