The Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul 214 East 8 th Street, Chattanooga, TN Jubilate Deo Youth Schola Plan for 2018-19 The Jubilate Deo Youth Schola is a school of singers who are dedicated to the musical treasures of the Catholic Church. We welcome treble singers from grades 2-12. Our reasons for learning and singing in the Church include a desire to more fully express our Catholic tradition, to develop our singing ability, show our love for God, and share these gifts with the congregation and community. The following is an outline of our plan for the 2018-19 school year. For background information about our choir, please see the Jubilate Deo Youth Schola page of the parish website, including the Downloads section of that page: http://www.stspeterandpaulbasilica.com/pages/youth-choir Contacts Maria Rist Director music@stspeterandpaulbasilica.com 865-335-0588 Andrea Tierney Teacher/Accompanist andreastierney@gmail.com 423-243-6350 Rosie Exum Assistant Fr. David Carter Pastor Aims for the Year 1. Develop musical skill Singing technique (posture, breathing, diction, resonance) Rhythm, intonation, and creative expression Gregorian chant notation (four-line staff) Modern musical notation (five-line staff) We will employ the Ward Method, the gold standard in teaching Catholic children to sing. 2. Learn core Catholic music Chants of Pope Paul VI s Jubilate Deo collection that all the faithful are asked to learn Marian hymns the four seasonal antiphons, etc. Other traditional/classic sacred songs in Latin and English, including an introduction to canons and simple choral harmony Jubilate Deo Youth Schola: Plan for 2018-19 Revised 9/14/18 1

Below is a summary of the core songs that we plan to learn or review this year. We will be studying many other songs, but the ones listed here reflect our essential chant repertory. Fall Semester (Sept. Dec.) Adoremus in Aeternum Alma Redemptoris Mater Ave Maria Creator Alme Siderum Divine Praises (Laudes Divinae) Jesu Dulcis Memoria Missa Cantata responses Missa Jubilate Deo Latin/English Missa de Angelis (Kyrie/Gloria/Sanctus/Agnus Dei) Pater Noster Tantum Ergo Salve Regina Winter/Spring Semester (Jan. May) Adoro Te Devote Attende Domine Ave Maris Stella Ave Regina Coelorum Ave Verum Corpus Da Pacem, Domine antiphon O Salutaris Hostia (new to the schola this year) Pange Lingua Parce, Domine Regina Caeli Tu Es Petrus Ubi Caritas Veni Creator Spiritus 3. Pray the music We will begin and end with prayer. We will talk about the English and/or Spanish translations of the prayers we are singing. 4. Sing at the Ordinary Form Mass (normally on the 3 rd Sunday of the month at the 11:30 Mass) In our Ordinary Form Masses, we will usually sing a hymn at Communion, occasionally a Marian antiphon, and participate in the recessional hymn. Students sing the Ordinary parts, which we practice in class, in the congregation with their families. 5. Sing at the Ancient Form Missa Cantata (normally the 4 th Sunday of the month at 4:45pm) At this Mass, we will usually sing a piece on our own at the prelude or Communion, lead the processional hymn, and the seasonal Marian antiphon. We also will sing parts of the Ordinary along with the congregation (e.g., Pater Noster, Dismissal, Missa de Angelis). 6. Participate in Eucharistic Adoration, other devotions, and parish celebrations On First Fridays we will spend a few minutes in Adoration and sing for Benediction. In December we will sing during the Basilica St. Nicholas dinner, sing a concert of carols at Christmas, and sing at the Christmas Eve Vigil Mass. We will have an Epiphany party in Varallo Hall on Friday, January 4. This will be our fun reward for a semester of singing. We will need parent volunteers! On Fridays during Lent we will sing a short prelude to Vespers/Stations of the Cross. We will sing for the May Crowning. Our spring party will be during our last regular class on Friday, May 17 in Varallo Hall. We will need parent volunteers again! Our final scheduled event for the school year is the Corpus Christi procession at 1pm on June 23. We will have an extra class on June 21 to prepare for that. Jubilate Deo Youth Schola: Plan for 2018-19 Revised 9/14/18 2

Schola Structure We will assign each singer a level group using colors from the Basilica s crest: Blue (Beginners who may not yet match pitch consistently) When we sing at Mass, these singers may sing the Marian antiphon, Pater Noster, the Ordinary, and other songs they know that the congregation joins in on. During practice, these singers will be encouraged to listen first, then join in and cover one ear to better hear themselves. Learn to follow the lyrics with the notes on the page. Learn the schola s core chants. Learn basic solfege-based singing technique (using Ward method, etc.) Goal for moving to Red: Be able to match pitch most of the time when singing in group Red (Beginning singers who can blend in the choir) When we sing at Mass, these singers may sing any songs they have demonstrated they know during practice. Continue learning the schola s core chants. Learn basic solfege-based singing technique (using Ward method, etc.) Goal for moving to Gold: Demonstrate experience with solfege and chant notation. Be able to sing the schola s core chants (at least the ones taught in the current semester). Gold (Intermediate singers who know core songs and have developed skill in sight singing) These singers will study sight singing more intensely, including modern notation. In addition to the schola s core melodies, they will be assigned harmony parts on certain songs. Learn more advanced songs, study modern musical notation, and sing in harmony. Goal for moving to Silver: Be able to sight-sing simple melodies independently. Sing accurately most of the time. Silver (Advanced - independent sight singers) These singers will be offered more in-depth experience in sight singing. They will be assigned parts to learn and sing, and they may also sing with the adult schola. Notes about the Levels Learning to sing is a primary purpose in a schola ( school of singers ). It is to be expected that not every singer will be able to perform every song every time. With consistent effort, students at each level will develop their abilities and contribute to the group. Student progress will be influenced largely by reinforcement of practice opportunities at home. Parents are expected to provide opportunities for their children to listen to CD s and audio links frequently and incorporate regular practice times into the home routine. Jubilate Deo Youth Schola: Plan for 2018-19 Revised 9/14/18 3

The teachers will take care to present each group as important and valuable to the team. The color designation should help keep the group identities neutral. The teachers and the whole schola will acknowledge students who are ready to move to the next level, showing appreciation for their efforts. Normally this will be done at the end of the semester. Adult Volunteers Adult volunteers are needed to help maintain order in the choir loft when we sing. Younger students sometimes have trouble paying attention or finding their place and need help. The extra adult presence helps us provide adequate supervision during breakout sessions when the teachers move to separate rooms. Per diocesan policy, every adult who works with children in our parish programs must be registered in the Virtus program. Call the parish office to find out how to register. Class Agenda We also need help for our parties on Jan. 4 and May 17! Class Time: 4:15 5:30 pm most Fridays, with flexibility noted below Understanding that some schools dismiss later, making it difficult to arrive at 4:15, it is ok for kids to come a little later if needed. We will normally do review work at 4:15 and have our opening prayer at 4:30. On First Fridays and Fridays of Lent, class ends after the 5:30 Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament (which takes 5-10 minutes). At times, individual students may be invited to come early (3:45 or 4:00 pm) for voice coaching or level evaluation Boys Breakout Session On some Fridays, subject to Fr. Carter s availability, there will be a Boys Breakout session during class. The purpose of this time is for the boys to gain solidarity and confidence in their important role as singers of the church, and to help them enjoy participating in the schola. The boys will learn special songs that the full group is not learning, and they will present them as surprises at key moments during the year. During this time, the girls will be working on songs with harmony. Family presence at class Parents are, of course, invited to observe the classes at any time. We do ask that you help us keep the classroom quiet and ensure that younger siblings do not wander around the class area. Although we do not have a staff nursery worker during class, the parish nursery will be available for families to keep their younger children entertained. Jubilate Deo Youth Schola: Plan for 2018-19 Revised 9/14/18 4

Jubilate Deo Youth Schola Schedule of Events 2018-2019 The following is a preliminary plan of the Masses and other parish events when the schola will sing during this school year. Our potential to give our very best to God depends on the cooperation among singers, teachers, and parents. We ask parents to encourage your children to contribute to the Church, the schola, and their own development by attending regularly, following instructions, practicing at home using the printed and audio resources, and coming to our events prepared.
