Women With a Purpose A Publication of the East District of the United Methodist Women Volume 1 1 st Quarter Barbara A. Wooten, Communications Coordinator February 2015 From Bobbie Ledbetter, District UMW President LEADERSHIP can be a very demanding calling! Sometimes we need a pick me up. A refresher, a time to reach out to God, share ideas with one another and to pray with each other. We all need help at one time or another. It is a wonderful feeling knowing we can go to God and ask him anything. God always has a positive answer; See below. News From Crockett UMW Crockett UMW is working on bookmarks with magnets for the women of the church, telling about our meeting times, when and where, and telling some about what we do. All on a bookmark?? This ought to be fun! We are inviting them to join us. This will be handed out on March 15th when we conduct the church services for UMW Sunday. We are collecting 1 lb. coffee cans that the "workshop" group will decorate for our World Thank Offering. We are going to see who can come up with the most outrageous cans. Our "workshop" group meets every 3rd Thursday of the month at 9:30. We work on our projects then go to lunch at a local restaurant. We are encouraging everyone to go to Spring Celebration at Lakeview on February 27th and 28th. We would like to see everyone in Livingston on March 14th. Here is a challenge; let s see which unit can get the most women to be at these events. No grand prize but just the satisfaction of knowing your group did it. You are Invited The Lovelady Circuit United Methodist Women invites you and your guest to attend and participate in our Annual Women s Day Program. The program is set for Sunday, March 29th at 1:00 PM at the White Rock United Methodist Church located at 4343 County Road 4200 (East of Lovelady) 75851. The speaker will be Pastor Lillie Ferrell from Houston, Texas. Use your GPS or RSVP at 936-636-2423 or barbara.wooten1878@yahoo.com for directions. Refreshments served after the program. Barbara A. Wooten, UMW President Save this Date! The Livingston UMW is having their Spiritual Growth Retreat on Saturday, April 18, 3-6 p.m. at Suzanne Ganzer's farm in Livingston. The program will be on the book, "Small Things with Great Love". Hope to have flyers for distribution at March 21 st UMW District meeting. From the District Treasurer Hello to all, The first quarter ends on February 16 and your report is due to me by March 3. In this first report, please include the following if you have not already gotten them to me: >Copy of your 2015 unit budget >Copy of your 2014 unit audit >Call to Prayer and self-denial offerings >Love ribbons Remember that when you calculate your year's pledges from your unit, it is suggested that you send 60% to the district (which I send to the conference) and keep 40% for local unit expenses. If you have bought gift to mission cards already or sent money for SMR pins, be sure to show those in the money sent ahead column on your report. Thanks to all of you for the great job you do. Please be sure to call or email me if you have any questions. PAUL'S, LUFKIN The first regular meeting for St Paul s unit of United Methodist Women was on January 22, at 11:30. The group meets monthly in the church fellowship hall for the business meeting a brown bag lunch. Ten ladies braved the cold rain to attend the first meeting of 2015!! Ms. Bonnie Killam did a beautiful presentation on Naomi. Each month a different Woman of the Bible will be featured and presented by a different member of the group. Ann Reyes shared with the group information about a Prayer Shawl ministry and different ways individuals can participate. Several ladies are planning to join with Ann to make prayer shawls and lap shawls. The shawls are given to anyone in need of comfort from grief, illness or anything that has caused them pain, grief or loss. Besides lunch, business, program and prayer shawl discussion each lady present drew for a secret pal for the coming year. Secret Pal's identity will be revealed with a gift exchange in December. St. Paul's UMW actively supports mission work, foreign, as well as local missions in many different ways. By taking part in the local United Methodist Women's group women have opportunities that would not be possible individually. Among the projects St. Paul women will take part in for 2015 includes United Methodist Women's Hands on project for UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief), which provides School Supply Kits for children who do not have school supplies. St. Paul s goal is to provide fifty kits. Blessings from St. Paul's UMW, Lufkin. UMCOR Hands On Project 2015 School Kits Value: $11.00 per kit Check the East District Directory 2015 for instructions for completing the school kits. Remember to enclose an envelope containing at least $1 for each kit you send. This donation enables kits to be sent to areas in need. Contact an East District Officer if you have any questions.

The Shelbyville United Methodist Women are a group of ladies dedicated to being a support to our church and community. Our little, but very old church is small but a caring church. We truly have such a sweet group of UMW members that have always had big hearts and helping hands. For a small church we usually have ten ladies at our monthly meetings. We meet on the second Tues. of the month. We do not meet in June. Two months of the year we visit homebound members and those that are in the local Nursing Homes. First part of December we gather to prepare Christmas Goodie Bags for these folks. It is always a big hit and our group always receives a blessing for our efforts. Each year we make it possible to deliver big bags of school supplies to two of the local schools in our community. Not only do the students appreciate this, but the teachers are always quick to acknowledge our generosity. Three of the organizations in our county that we support with monetary gifts for children each year look forward also to our Christmas gifts. We all donate new toys and clothes to be given to abused and or needy children. Like other UMW groups we enjoy either preparing the UMCOR Hands-On projects or sending money to cover several items. Our prayer blanket ministry is well received. We have fleece blankets either handmade or bought, made up in advance for gifts. Our unit prays over these blankets before giving them out. They are given not only to our members, but friends and family members as well who are ill or who may be going through a tragedy. In closing this about sums up what I'm trying to say. Quoting a slogan from several years ago, It s not just the steeple, it s the people".
