PRAYER FOR THE DEPARTED May the angels lead you into paradise. May the martyrs come to welcome you and take you to the holy city, the new and eternal Jerusalem. May choirs of angels welcome you and lead you to the bosom of Abraham; and where Lazarus is poor no longer. May you find eternal rest. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. + AMEN + To fall in love with God is the greatest of romances, to seek Him the greatest adventure, to find Him the greatest human achievement. Raising Our Hearts and Minds to God Forms of Prayer Prayer is the raising of our hearts and minds to God, when we speak and listen to God. The Catechism tells us the Holy Spirit reminds the Church of all that Jesus said, and it teaches us about the life of prayer. There are different forms of prayers known as blessings, petitions, intercessions, thanksgiving, and praise. Blessing: Invoke God s strength and healing power ; ask for His care for a person, place, thing, or special activity. Help us to remain close to God, be aware of His presence, and see goodness around us. Blessings for our family, children, sick people, objects of prayer and worship, special occasions, food, relationships, animals, and gatherings. Petition: A request to God to fulfill a need, great and small. Asking God s forgiveness with trusting humility (Catechism of the Catholic Church). Jesus says: whatever you ask the Father in my name he will give you (John 16:23). In addition to asking, we need must also acknowledge our sinfulness and need for God. Intercession: When we ask for something on behalf of someone else. We offer prayers of intercession for the Church, leaders in government and society, special needs, sick people, and those who have died. Thanksgiving: Every joy and suffering, and every event and need can become an offering of thanksgiving. The letters of St. Paul often begin and end with thanksgiving, and the Lord Jesus is always present in it: In all circumstances give thanks, for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus (1 Thessalonians 5:18). (from the Catechism of the Catholic Church 2638) Praise: An expression of our response to God, - for what He does and because He is. In the Eucharist, the whole Church joins with Jesus Christ in expressing praise and thanksgiving to the Father.
