Haney Presbyterian Church JUNE 2017 Newsletter Extraordinary Ordinary Time Rev. Dr. Gerard Booy Pentecost leads into the season of the church year called ordinary time roughly six months that stretches from Trinity Sunday to Christ the King Sunday and the beginning of Advent. There are no major holy days like Christmas, Easter, and Pentecost in this season, just the daily working out of our salvation in the company of others. Ordinary time is where we walk before the Lord in the land of the living (Psalm 116:9). The gospel is worked into the fabric of our daily lives and it is worked out in worship, love, and acts of service. The name ordinary time may be misleading. There is nothing ordinary about ordinary time because we live our lives in the presence and in the power of the Holy Spirit. Pentecost reminds us of the coming of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is given to the church, to all believers, to each one of us. We are temples of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit lives in us and gives us life. The Spirit intercedes for us with prayers that go beyond words. The Spirit pours the love of God into our hearts and gives us hope. The Spirit guides our steps and gives wisdom to discern. The Spirit equips us to serve God and one another in love. The Holy Spirit empowers us to witness. In the presence and by the power of the Holy Spirit, God s kingdom is being established on earth as it is in heaven. Lives are turned around, drawn into community, and turned outward again to a world in need. By the power of the Holy Spirit we are being transformed in the image of Christ to the glory of God, and for the sake of others. Christian life is unthinkable no, impossible without the presence and the work of the Holy Spirit. Paul writes that no one can say, Jesus is Lord, except by the Holy Spirit. (1 Corinthians 12:3) In ordinary time, we hear the invitation to follow Christ. Be shaped by the Word; communicate and commune with God in prayer; establish healthy 1
rhythms of work and rest; care for your loved ones; raise your family; serve your neighbours; work and worship; play and pray; involve yourself in God s mission; seek justice; give witness to the hope that is living in you. In ordinary time we live, we love, and we learn while we pray: Holy Spirit, guide us, shine your light inside us, fill us with your passion, breathe life into our souls. (Words of the song by Rory Noland) Gerard Pastor Gerard Booy has announced his resignation from Haney Presbyterian Church to follow God s call into a ministry of Spiritual Direction with small groups and individuals. We will miss Gerard and we are very grateful for the way he has led our congregation for the past eleven years. Our prayer is that God will continue to guide him as he discerns God s leading into this new stage of ministry. Gerard s last Sunday is Sunday June 25. Please join us for the service at 10 a.m., followed by cake in the hall. Crisis in Syria The United Nations has identified 13.5 million Syrians who require humanitarian assistance. More than six million are internally displaced and over 4.8 million are refugees outside of Syria. The numbers are staggering. While it s easy to feel overwhelmed by the need in our world, as Christians, we are called to be people of hope. Presbyterian World Service & Development has been actively involved in responding to the crisis since 2012. During that time, Presbyterians have made possible over $2.8 million in programs. But in order to continue responding to the desperate need, PWS&D needs our support. They are seeking to raise an additional $200,000 in 2017 to benefit refugees and those displaced within Syria. A gift of $100 will feed a family of five for a month. And through the PCC s partnership with the ACT Alliance and Canadian Foodgrains Bank, donations are matched at CFGB, making a $100 donation become $500, thus feeding five families of five for a month. Everyone deserves to be safe. Everyone deserves to be protected. PWS&D is inviting you to Be a Peacemaker to pray for those enduring displacement and trauma because of war, and to offer financial support that will lead to critical, life- saving assistance. There are various ways to donate but a simple way is to put your donation in an envelope marked Syria Crisis and place it on the offering plate on Sunday. 2
