This antiphon for today's responsorial psalm offers the focus for today's readings. As we on earth celebrate the triumph of all the saints--the ones officially canonized by the Church, and the countless others who have also reached heaven--we add nothing to their glory. But we give ourselves reason to hope. We too long to see the face of God and believe that we can one day be counted among those whose robes, as John tells us in the book of Revelation, are washed "white in the blood of the Lamb." The passage from John's First Letter offers further assurance: we are God's children who will one day see God. But today's Gospel pulls us past longing and reassurance into action. Jesus clearly tells us what we must do to be counted among the saints. We must be poor in spirit, hungry for holiness, merciful, single-hearted, and peacemakers! Then we too will see the face of God. St. Vincent de Paul Church Page Seven November 1, 2015 SAINT VINCENT POEM/SONG CONTEST I have always thought that there should be more songs for Saints. There are, of course, hundreds of songs honoring Mary but few (to my knowledge) that honor other Saints by name. I know All Praise to St. Patrick and Dear Guardian of Mary (about St. Joseph,) that we used to sing when I was in grade school but I can t think of any others beyond When the Saints Go Marching In and For All the Saints. Consequently, I want YOU to write a song honoring St. Vincent de Paul. This will NOT require that you compose music, but only that you write a poem. There are many tunes that we sing at Mass that have different sets of lyrics. In fact, if you look at the bottom of the songs in the Gather Hymnal, you will often see a notation: Tune (with a name) and then numbers like 8 7 8 7. These numbers indicate the meter of the lyrics or the number of syllables in each line. Any poem with the same meter will fit that tune. If you have a favorite hymn melody, you might use that as a starting point. What I invite you to do is write a poem honoring St. Vincent de Paul that will fit a common hymn tune. The poem should have at least three stanzas (with or without a refrain) and should refer to some of his virtues such as his care for the poor, his zeal for preaching, his founding the Vincentian religious (Congregation of the Mission, Daughters of Charity) and so forth. I m still working on the details of the contest (including the prizes) and the way to submit your entries, so while you can start thinking and writing, please do NOT send them in just yet. I d like to complete the contest by early spring (so you ve got some time) so that we can print the winning entry(ies) and use them for the next Solemnity of St. Vincent in 2016. I d love to have the hymn become a beloved part of the traditions of our parish. God bless you all. - Fr. Dennis McNeil ST. JOSEPH S BOOK AND GIFT STORE St. Joseph s Queen of Angels Religious Treasures Book & Gift Store located at 2 nd and Sackett Sts. in Cuyahoga Falls in Nolan Hall (lower level of the church) will be hosting an Open House on Tuesday, November 10 th from 5:30pm-7:30pm.
