The Twenty Third Sunday in Ordinary Time September 9, 2018 Saint Luke Church, Whitestone, New York From the Pastor Thus says the Lord: Say to those whose hearts are frightened: Be strong, fear not! Here is your God, he comes with vindication; with divine recompense he comes to save you. Then the eyes of the blind be opened, and the ears of the deaf be cleared; Then the lame shall leap like a stag, then the tongue of the mute will sing. Streams will burst forth in the desert, and rivers in the steppe. The burning sands will become pools, and the thirsty ground, springs of water. (Isaiah 35:4-7a) September marks the beginning of a new Pastoral Year the 46th of my priesthood. What a pleasure it is to welcome back the many parish organizations and groups and with them to rejoice in the life and witness of faith each brings, whether it is the opening of our Parish grammar school or the return of the Golden Age Group, both this past week. In many ways these are troubled times from the continued revelation of the sexual abuse of minors by members of the clergy and the disgraceful actions of cover up by those who are called to shepherd the faithful entrusted to their care to the state of our country and world. Yes the words of Isaiah the prophet are truly appropriate and much needed for they speak of hope and consolation in the salvation which God has worked for us in Christ Jesus. I would quote the commentary on this reading from the Workbook for Lectors, Gospel Leaders and Proclaimers of the Word: The prophet announces the transformation of our reality that seems tired and resistant to change: Light to blind eyes, renewed energies to the worn out, athletic forces to lame legs, sound to deaf ears, and songs from the mute. Yes, we are troubled by much in the reality of our Church and world. We can be tempted to lose hope. The readings today tell us to look to the light of God s love, power and goodness at all times, especially in times of darkness and gloom. We are a people of hope a hope based not in our power to solve the many problems than confront us but a hope based on the victory of Jesus a victory that has been shared in the water of Baptism. No matter how dark it may be, do not despair because the Risen Christ is with us always. Let us begin this Pastoral Year alive with hope and willing to work for the transformation of ourselves, our Church and our world in Jesus Christ. God Bless. Let us pray for one another. 1

Ongoing maintenance. Summer often provides time to address needed maintenance issues. This summer saw the replacement of the old electrical panel in the rectory with a new panel. This work was required to address major problems after so many years of use, to provide adequate electrical power to the rectory and to resolve some real safety concerns. The total cost of this work was $8,975. While not something that can be seen or looks beautiful, it was a matter of basic maintenance. This work was possible only because of the generosity of our parishioners to the weekly collection. Thank you. DIOCESAN COLLECTION FOR SUPPORT OF CATHOLIC EDUCATION Next weekend, September 15th & 16th, there will be two collections. The first collection is for the support of the parish. WHAT IS A CATECHIST A catechist is faith, hope, and love attached to arms and legs, aches and pains, family duties, and not enough time. A catechist is an ordinary person who is extraordinary because he or she teaches as Jesus did. A catechist is faithful to the past, open to the future, and is especially dedicated to deepening the faith of the present. From the poem A Catechist Is, by Monsignor John Francis Murphy The word catechist comes from the Greek word meaning to echo. Catechists echo the Word of God to our parish children. They come from all walks of life and all ages: women, men, college students, parents, grandparents, singles, and religious. Catechists are not expert teachers or brilliant theologians. They are ordinary people, just like you, who generously volunteer their time to share our Catholic faith, values, and traditions with our youngest generation of Christians. They are positive role models who help children grow in faith and spirituality. What an important ministry! Their gift has tremendous value.because through their words and actions, the message of Christ continues to spread throughout the world. Here at St. Luke Church, our catechist are the heart of OUR Religious Education Program. We sincerely appreciate their gifts of time, talent and service. At this time, we are still in need of a few catechists for several level 1,3,4, and 5 classes that meet on Wednesday afternoons from 4:00 5:30pm IS GOD CALLING YOU TO BE A CATECHIST? 6
