Worship and Spiritual Life Pastor s Corner Earlier this summer, I spent a day with some other priests at a little cabin up in the mountains that belonged to a parishioner of one of my priest friends. We had a good day together just hanging out, hiking and swimming in the river. In the late afternoon, we had hiked along the river to a waterfall and climbed down to the bottom to a place just past where the water had settled at the bottom of the falls. It was an awesome sight to look back up at the falls where all this water was cascading down. It was also a good place for swimming as the water settled at the base of the falls to make a beautiful little pool before collecting into the river again and continuing downstream. On our way back up we had to take another route, so we had to follow the pool a ways before turning back upriver. We came to a place where you could see the pool from up above and from there one could see that the pool actually had two areas. One area was that which eventually connected back up with the river and continued downstream, and the other was a side pool that appeared almost to be an overflow area that was most likely only really filled when the river was at higher levels. It was a long way from the main stream, and the current was not quite as strong there. From the overhead angle you could see that the water in the main pool was clear and clean but also moving, while the water in the side pool had collected a sort of dirty film on top of it that was pretty disgusting from where we were standing. Luckily, the area where we had gone swimming was part of the larger pool; otherwise I would have felt pretty gross. As I thought about, it I started to realize how much it related to the spiritual life. If the Holy Spirit is the current of the river, and we are the pool, how important it is to have an area of outflow in our lives. The water that moved downstream was clear and clean but the water that remained pooled had this gross film on top. When we simply come to Mass but don t have any place in our lives where we give back or let the Spirit flow out from us, we have a tendency to experience the same thing in our souls. Even though we are taking God in, through the sacrament, we aren t letting Him flow out through ministry and we feel stagnant or unfulfilled. To be truly human we have to exist in community, and that means to fully experience love, we have to give of ourselves. Prayers Always, Fr. NEXT WEEK S READINGS for September 23, 2018 25 th Sunday in Ordinary Wisdom 2:12,17-20 James 3:16-4:3 Mark 9:30-37 SPECIAL COLLECTION for Immaculate Conception Parish Prior to Fr. Joseph s arrival, we did a complete walkthrough of the Rectory. At that time, we discovered many areas in need of maintenance and attention. The list of issues to be addressed includes fresh paint throughout the entire interior, window coverings, bathroom tub enclosure repairs, carpet removal, repairs in the garage and replacement of some furnishings. Work has already begun as volunteers have removed old carpets, performed needed repairs in the garage and begun repainting on the main floor. The estimated cost will be $15,000-$20,000. A second collection will be taken up at all weekend Masses at Immaculate Conception September 22 nd & 23 rd. If members of Our Lady of Perpetual Help wish to help, please put in an envelope during the normal collection with a note regarding Rectory Improvements. A separate collection is not planned at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, since Immaculate Conception is primarily responsible for the upkeep of the Rectory just as Our Lady of Perpetual Help is responsible for the Parish Office. If anyone would like to help paint or has skills in installing bathtub enclosures, please call Duane Schireman at (425)275-6790 or Jessica in the Parish Office. Special thanks to those who have already given generously of their time from both Immaculate Conception and Our Lady of Perpetual Help

We have many wonderful people that have answered the call to catechize those in our parish that take part in Elementary Faith Formation, RCIA, Journey with Jesus, Marriage Preparation, Vacation Bible Camp, CLOW and Youth Group. Prayer for Catechists O God, our Heavenly Father, you have given us the gift of these catechists to be heralds of the Gospel to our parish family. We lift them up to you in thanksgiving and intercede for them concerning their hopes and needs. May we be attentive to the presence of your Word in them, a Word that lifts up and affirms, calls forth and challenges, is compassionate and consoles. We pray that our parish family will always be blessed with those who have responded to the call to share in Christ s prophetic mission as catechists. May we, too, be open to the universal call to service that Christ addresses to all of his disciples, contributing our gifts to the Communion of Faith, the Church. We ask this in Jesus name. Amen.
