The Daily Disciple August 2018

One-Minute Summary A quick review of the most important information in the newsletter. Pastor Joel invites you to pray for the church during Planning Week 2018 (August 20-23). See pg. 2. The summer is coming to an end and the school year is right around the corner. Check out Tory s article (pg. 4&5) for highlights from our summer and find dates for all the fun things to come this fall. Ministry Fair First Church will hold its first ever Ministry Fair after the worship service on Sunday, August 26. Stop by the Heritage Room after the service to learn about what is happening at First Church during the upcoming school year. You will have an opportunity to register your children for Sunday School, get information about youth group and Confirmation, and learn about adult Bible studies. You can also sign up to serve in different areas of the church, such as the choir, nursery, youth, the soup kitchen, and much more. This is a great opportunity to discover ways to be Rooted in Christ, Growing Together, and Serving the World! Sunday Morning Prayer Service First Church will end our Summer Prayer Covenant with a prayer service at 8 AM on Sunday, September 2. This 45-minute service will include scripture reading, prayer, and worship. Join us as we pray for our families, church, and community! 1

A word from Pastor Joel Dear Church, It s hard to believe, but we are already staring down the end of summer. It feels like just yesterday that we were hosting Vacation Bible School and looking forward to the Youth Mission Trip. Now the Auglaize County Fair is next week and the beginning of the school year is just around the corner. I hope that you and your family have time to enjoy the summer before it disappears! The end of summer is a critical planning time. During the month of August, the church calendar is basically planned out for the entire year. This includes Sunday School, Confirmation, and Youth Group, as well as the sermon schedule. Beyond administrative tasks, this is an opportunity to pray and seek God s will for First Church for the coming year. We want to seek God s guidance and direction together. The office staff is setting aside August 20-23 for Planning Week 2018. We will dedicate the majority of our time that week meeting together, praying, and planning for the coming year. But we cannot do it alone, and we don t want to! We want your prayerful support and encouragement. Please pray for us, First Church, and the New Knoxville community. Pray that we would honor God with our commitments over the next year and that First Church would make an impact for God s Kingdom during that time. Pray also that we would be good stewards of the time and resources that God provides. We want to make the biggest impact that we can with the time, people, and finances that God makes available. Matthew 6:33 says, Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Let s make seeking after God our first priority. Imagine what God can do in our church and community over the next year when we agree to do that together! In Christ, Pastor Joel 2

A word from our Youth Pastor Tory It has been an amazing summer. I cannot believe that we are already gearing up and getting ready for the school year. This summer we have done a lot of really great things as a youth group. We had two awesome bible studies for our junior and senior high students. Our junior high students learned about what it means to have a faith that is alive and growing. Our high school students learned about secular world beliefs and what it means to have a Godly worldview. Both studies were great and very fruitful for our students. Our last big event for the summer was our local mission trip! I wish you all could have experienced this trip with us. God worked in so many ways. I saw the Holy Spirit pushing our students outside of their comfort zones in the way the talked with strangers, showed Christ s love to each other and our community, and also how they loved on the residents at Elmwood Nursing Home. It was an incredible week filled with many God moments. I really want to encourage you to ask the students that participated on the trip about their experience. They have a lot to tell and would love to spend time talking with you about it. Thank you to all those that were involved and for everyone that lifted us up in prayer during the week! There are many exciting things coming for the school year. We are so excited to start sharing those things with you during the month of August. Mark your calendars with the dates below and continue to pay attention to the bulletin for more exciting information! I am praying for you all as your summer ends and the school year begins. I cannot way to see how God works through us as a youth group and as a church this year! 5

Mark Your Calendars! September 9 th - Sunday School Kick-Off Picnic at the New Knoxville Park following our worship service. There will be food, fun and lots of activities to do with the whole family. September 12 th - Youth Group Kick-Off Party from 6:30-8:00PM. All junior and senior high students are invited. September 16 th - First day of Confirmation and Sunday School. September 16 th - First night of High School Bible Study. We will update you all on the details of these exciting dates as they get closer! 6

For Regular Maintenance $127,886.53 Financial FAQ Each month the treasurer will answer commonly asked questions about the financial reports. Have a question? Send it to her at connie.schroer@nktelco.net Why do we have so many funds? So we can easily track the tithes and gifts that come in and the expenses that go out. With the exception of one savings account, all of the money is in one account at the bank and is accounted for separately in our church software system. What is a pledge? A pledge is an estimate of planned giving or could also be called a statement of intent. It is usually made at the beginning of the year and can be given throughout the year or all at once. It allows your family to prayerfully plan and budget your giving and allows the church to do the same with expenses. Where does my pledge go? Pledge giving goes into the general operating fund and is used to pay for the day to day operations that make ministry possible. Things like utilities, church insurance, salaries, worship supplies, office & cleaning supplies, snow removal, lawn care, postage etc. 12

Opportunities to become more Rooted & Grow in your Faith Men's Bible Study is every Sunday morning at 8:00 am in the ministry center youth room. The Gathering will meet on the second Wednesday of each month at 6:30 pm in the Social Room during July and August. This small discussion group digs a little deeper into the previous Sunday s scripture passages and sermon message using Pastor Joel s weekly questions. Grand Adults Fellowship meets on Tuesdays at 2:00 pm in the ministry center youth room. You are invited to come and play cards or games and enjoy some friendship and food. Call Becky Huston at 419-753- 2230 if you need to arrange for transportation. The New Knoxville Historical Society will be open the fourth Sunday of the month from June through October. Four buildings the barn, the doctor s office, the summer kitchen and the log cabin will be available for touring. The house, however, is closed until further notice as it is cleaned and renovated following the malfunction of a dehumidifier in the basement in May. Our goal is to have the house open for the annual Heritage Days in September, which will include chili and a band concert. We extend our love and sympathy to the family of Betty Henschen who entered Christ s care on June 28, 2018. She was 90. A service in memory of her life and legacy was held in the sanctuary of First Church on Monday, July 2nd. She was given a Christian Burial at Pilger Ruhe Cemetery. 13

On Sunday, July 29th during church Shannon Roediger will be sharing information on her upcoming trip back to India for a three month internship with the non-profit organization called Rescue Pink. Rescue Pink is dedicated to ending female infanticide in India through rescue, prevention and awareness. Shannon will be leaving in early fall and will be helping with Rescue Pink s entrepreneurship program, nutrition program and an after school program for children ages five to twelve. She is in the process of raising $3,000 to make her continued call to the mission field possible. Upon her return, she hopes to attend Adventures in Missions Leadership classes in March of 2019. The blue jug will be out on the steps on August 5 in support of Shannon s work in India. You may also send support to the church office for her. It is not too late to join us for the 40 Day Prayer Covenant! You can jump in right now. If you have not gotten a card, call the church office! Also, be on the look out for Joel s weekly videos discussing the Covenant. These videos are located on our Facebook page! 14
