The Tenth Sunday after Pentecost July 29, 2018 8:00am Hymn of Invocation: Jesus Has Come and Brings Pleasure LSB 533 Stand Confession and Absolution The sign of the cross may be made by all in remembrance of their Baptism. P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen. P If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. C But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Silence for reflection on God's Word and for self-examination. P Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. C Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen. P In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for His sake God forgives us all our sins. To those who believe in Jesus Christ He gives the power to become the children of God and bestows on them the Holy Spirit. May the Lord, who has begun this good work in us, bring it to completion in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. C Amen. 2

Salutation and Collect of the Day P Let us pray. P Almighty and most merciful God, the protector of all who trust in You, strengthen our faith and give us courage to believe that in Your love You will rescue us from all adversities; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. 5

Sit Old Testament Reading Genesis 9:8 17 8 God said to Noah and to his sons with him, 9 Behold, I establish my covenant with you and your offspring after you, 10 and with every living creature that is with you, the birds, the livestock, and every beast of the earth with you, as many as came out of the ark; it is for every beast of the earth. 11 I establish my covenant with you, that never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of the flood, and never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth. 12 And God said, This is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations: 13 I have set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. 14 When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen in the clouds, 15 I will remember my covenant that is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh. And the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh. 16 When the bow is in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth. 17 God said to Noah, This is the sign of the covenant that I have established between me and all flesh that is on the earth. A This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. Psalm Psalm 136:1 9 (antiphon: v. 26) P Give thanks to the God of heaven, C for his steadfast love endures forever. P Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, C for his steadfast love endures forever. P Give thanks to the God of gods, C for his steadfast love endures forever. P Give thanks to the Lord of lords, C for his steadfast love endures forever; P to him who alone does great wonders, C for his steadfast love endures forever; 6

P to him who by understanding made the heavens, C for his steadfast love endures forever; P to him who spread out the earth above the waters, C for his steadfast love endures forever; P to him who made the great lights, C for his steadfast love endures forever; P the sun to rule over the day, C for his steadfast love endures forever; P the moon and stars to rule over the night, C for his steadfast love endures forever. ALL: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. P Give thanks to the God of heaven, C for his steadfast love endures forever. Hymn: Give Thanks with a Grateful Heart LSB 806 Epistle Ephesians 3:14 21 14 For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, 15 from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, 16 that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, 19 and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. 20 Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, 21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen. Stand A This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. 7

Alleluia and Verse Holy Gospel Mark 6:45 56 P The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the sixth chapter. 45 Immediately [Jesus] made his disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, to Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowd. 46 And after he had taken leave of them, he went up on the mountain to pray. 47 And when evening came, the boat was out on the sea, and he was alone on the land. 48 And he saw that they were making headway painfully, for the wind was against them. And about the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. He meant to pass by them, 49 but when they saw him walking on the sea they thought it was a ghost, and cried out, 50 for they all saw him and were terrified. But immediately he spoke to them and said, Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid. 51 And he got into the boat with them, and the wind ceased. And they were utterly astounded, 52 for they did not understand about the loaves, but their hearts were hardened. 53 When they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret and moored to the shore. 54 And when they got out of the boat, the people immediately recognized him 55 and ran about the whole region and began to bring the sick people on their beds to wherever they heard he was. 56 And wherever he came, in villages, cities, or countryside, they laid the sick in the marketplaces and implored him that they might touch even the fringe of his garment. And as many as touched it were made well. P This is the Gospel of the Lord. 8

Sit Children s Message Hymn of the Day: My Hope is Built on Nothing Less LSB 575 Sermon: Genesis 9:8-17 Stand Apostles' Creed C I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life T everlasting. Amen. Prayer of the Church 9

Sit Offering Stand Offertory Lord's Prayer C Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those 10

who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. Closing Prayer P Blessed Lord, You have caused all Holy Scriptures to be written for our learning. Grant that we may so hear them, read, mark, learn and take them to heart that, by the patience and comfort of Your holy Word, we may embrace and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, on God, now and forever. Creation Is Redeemed and Sanctified by the Word of Christ Jesus Having spared faithful Noah and his family from the flood, the Lord established His covenant with them, and with every living creature, that never again would there be a flood to destroy the earth (Gen. 9:9 11). He signed and sealed this everlasting covenant with His rainbow in the clouds, by which He sees and remembers His promise that the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh (Gen. 9:13 16). Although creation suffers under the curse of sin, the Lord preserves and orders creation for the benefit of His Church. In particular, all of creation is redeemed and sanctified by the incarnate Son of God. Take heart, and do not be afraid, for He is with you on the sea. He is not a ghost, but He has come in the flesh to save you. He has gotten into the boat with you, and the wind that was against you has ceased (Mark 6:45 51). For He is the Word and promise of the Father, and His own flesh and blood are the covenant by which you are strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being (Eph. 3:16 17). Rally Day Mission Festival Trinity Lutheran Church is excited for Rally Sunday coming September 9th. Rally Sunday is the beginning of the Sunday School year, Confirmation, Adult Bible study and many other groups we have at Trinity. We are excited to announce that Rally Sunday this year is going to be a Mission Festival. We will have each group represented as well as food, fellowship, games and activities for children and families. We want everyone involved to make this a fun exciting day and a chance to get to know others at Trinity. The booth or table will be set up outside the front door of Trinity (Weather permitting). We want everyone to feel welcome and excited to meet some new faces and maybe gain some new people for their group. Each group will have a table or booth with information about what they do, who is currently involved in the group as well as how others can get involved in the group (if they wish). You may also include any information or documentation that the group feels may be interesting or applicable to the congregation. Lastly, we are asking that each table have an activity (game, puzzle, coloring, trivia, project etc.) of some sort for children and families to engage in.
