Page 3 Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time - June 12, 2016 A Message from Fr. Bob Dear Friends, I hope you all had a good week and survived the scorching sun this past weekend. I would like to take a moment to provide an update on our search for a successor to lead our Music Ministry program. During the month of May, a team consis ng of myself, 3 staff members and a choir member held interviews for the open posi on of Director of Music. I am very pleased to report that an offer was made to, and accepted by, our top candidate, Mr. Richard Guerra. Bringing over 25 years of experience in music leadership, Richard has has been a part of parishes in Chandler, Phoenix and most recently, Gilbert where he has served for the last 8 years at St. Mary Magdalene Parish. We are thrilled at the opportunity to add such a gi ed member to our parish community and staff. On Thursday of last week, Richard met members of the Music Ministry at their regular choir rehearsal. Though the group will remain under the direc on of Tyler through the month of June, you are likely to see Richard at weekend liturgies as the two of them work closely to transi on leadership. Beginning Monday, June 27, Richard will formally join our staff and assume leadership from that point on. At this me, Tyler will begin serving our parish in his role as Director of Communica ons. The role of church communica on is changing and now involves planning and strategy for the many different channels available. Tyler will be responsible for managing and overseeing that our parish vision is messaged and communicated properly across all different mediums. I wish to congratulate both Richard and Tyler on their new roles. I am op mis c for our future knowing the exper se they each bring to their respec ve areas of responsibility. ~ Fr. Bob

Page 4 stbenedict.org Faith Forma on & More Family Promise Returns Family Promise is coming back to St. Benedict! We are excited to host families for evening meals, fellowship and a safe place to sleep June 26 through July 3. Families are hosted at the St. John Bosco mul purpose room for one week as they transi on into permanent housing. Please join us for this very rewarding service experience. Families are encouraged to par cipate and students can earn volunteer hours by helping those less fortunate. A Biblical Walk Through Mass Enrich your understanding of the Mass. Tuesdays, beginning on June 28 at 6 pm, we will begin a series called A Biblical Walk Through the Mass by Dr. Edward Sri. This study provides a unique tour of the meless Liturgy. Based on the revised transla on of the Mass we will explore the biblical roots of the words and gestures we experience in Mass and be enlightened to their profound significance. For more informa on contact Sr. Colleen at 480.961.1610 et. 302. Refugee Rese lement Project On April 27, the St. Benedict Pax Chris group sponsored an informa onal mee ng about the Refugee Rese lement Project. Seventeen parishioners were presented with facts about the Refugee Rese lement process by representa ves from Catholic Chari es. What refugees need the most is me from dedicated volunteers who will work with them on learning English, ge ng employment, se ng up a budget, and naviga ng systems such as food stamps, health care, transporta on, etc. Eight parishioners made the commitment to get fingerprint clearances, criminal background checks, and formal applica ons through Catholic Chari es which included reference checks. At the same me, the eight volunteers took several hours of training. Meanwhile, several other parishioners generously offered beds, clothing, furniture, and even a vehicle. While these items were not able to be designated for our family, they were able to be put to good use by other refugee families. At long last, the volunteers from St. Benedict have been assigned a family! They are from Afghanistan, and consist of a father, mother, and three children ages 6, 3, and 1. We are mee ng them for the first me this weekend, a er which we will be working with them on learning English, job readiness, and whatever else they need to survive and thrive in our culture. The commitment from our parish volunteers is from 3 to 6 months, a er which we will hopefully accept another cadre of volunteers willing to work with a different refugee family. Thanks to all who have stepped up to help!

St. Benedict can take par cular joy in this celebra on on June 20, as the response to egiving in our church has been wonderful. To build on this success, we are se ng a Na onal egiving Day Challenge. The goal is for St. Benedict families to put envelopes on a permanent summer vaca on and make the switch to egiving. This is especially important in the summer months, when many families may be out of town some weekends and St. Benedict does not receive their envelopes. It s easy for people to forget to catch up once they re back, and our weekly offertory can fluctuate as a result making it harder to predict how much we will have to sustain our year-round ministries. The more families who welcome the beginning of summer by taking this Na onal egiving Day Challenge, the more consistent and predictable our offertory will be month a er month and this will help us do even more to spread Christ s love throughout the community. Being part of this challenge is simple: Visit www. faithdirect.net and use our church code: AZ582. Thank you for your con nued support of our parish family with your me and talents as well as treasure! EPIC Sunsplash Social EPIC is heading to Sunsplash for some cool fun this weekend on Sunday, June 12, from 10:30 am to 2:30 pm! All high school and incoming high school students are encouraged to a end. We plan to meet there (155 W. Hampton Ave., Mesa) and the cost for the event will be $30 per person at the gate. For more informa on please contact David Rees by email at drees@ stbenedict.org. We re looking forward to seeing YOU there! Summer Youth Bible Study A en on all middle school and high school students! St. Benedict Youth Ministry is offering summer bible studies and we would love to have you join us! The middle school bible study, Wednesday Word, takes place on Wednesday a ernoons from 3 to 4:30 pm at Corpus Chris Church. The high school bible study, Thursday Night Theology, is held on Thursday nights from 7 to 8:30 pm in Annex 1 at St. Benedict. Both events will include a bible study reflec on, fellowship, and a social event to close out the session. If you have ques ons or would like to a end either event, please contact David Rees at drees@stbenedict.org. Giving via Stock is Win/Win Your dona on helps the parish fulfill our mission and as a donor your benefits are many, and may include not paying capital gains taxes on your donated, appreciated stocks. For more informa on or to register, contact Kathy at kathy.mccluskey@cox.net. Liturgy Corner In today s Gospel God welcomes back the sinner which offers us a few lessons. The first one is that the pardoned sinner should always show gra tude to God. One of the greatest proofs of gra tude is the firm resolu on to avoid offending our merciful God anymore. Do we really mean it when we solemnly promise in our act of contri on never more to offend you and to amend my life? There is great danger that we may make this promise out of habit of rou ne, without seriously intending or meaning what we say. The priest s power to forgive sin, given by Christ himself, has effect only on a repentant sinner. When we are repentant and we mean to avoid such sins in future, the person s a empts to avoid the occasions will be a sign of gra tude to the merciful God who forgave the sins. The second reading is for those amongst us who succeed in avoiding serious sins. We must avoid the sin of the Pharisees. They were devout men and did many a good deed. However, they gave all the credit, not to God, but to themselves. They grew proud of their good works and despised all others who did not do as they did. The good Chris an must avoid any such tempta on. We must never say, as the Pharisee did, thank God I am not like the rest of men, tax-gatherers and sinners. Yes, the avoidance of serious sin is something for which we must thank God. We should never praise ourselves because of this, and never, never should we despise the neighbor who is not so fortunate. Instead, we must help that neighbor by every means in our power to return to God s friendship through sincere repentance. This will prove our love for God and neighbor, and our sincere apprecia on of the great graces given us by our merciful Lord to keep us free from grave sins. ~ Excerpted from The Sunday Readings by Fr. Kevin O Sullivan, O.F.M.
