News from Father Todd Dear friends, Thank you to our parish Vocations Committee for sponsoring two great projects last week. Question of the Week Q. I am a little confused about the term consecrated life. When I was growing up we used to talk about religious and pray for vocations to the religious life. Is that the same thing as consecrated? Aren t all priests part of the religious life? The second annual Cookie Drop was a great success thanks to the many parish bakers who responded to the request for homemade cookies for the seminarians of Bishop Simon Brute College Seminary. The hope of the Vocations Committee was to provide each of the 58 seminarians a dozen homemade cookies for Valentine s Day as a sign of our appreciation and support. But instead of 58 dozen cookies, 190 dozen cookies arrived at the Parish Center! This made it possible to send a dozen cookies not only to the seminarians at Bishop Brute but also to the seminarians at St. Meinrad Seminary as well. Thank you to the parish bakers who provided the homemade cookies, to the elementary school children who decorated the bags with prayers and well wishes, to the Youth Group who bagged the cookies and to those who delivered the cookies to both Bishop Simon Brute and St. Meinrad Seminaries. Cookie Drop 2015 was a great success! The Vocations Committee also sponsored last Sunday s Holy Hour in Thanksgiving for the Gift of the Consecrated Life. Pope Francis has named 2015 The Year of the Consecrated Life. He has asked Catholics to reflect on the gift of religious life, to thank those who have responded to the call to service in the Church as religious sisters, brothers, priests and nuns and to pray for the gift of vocations to the religious life. In response to the U.S. bishops call to make February 8 th a day to meet the consecrated men and women in our midst, Saint Mark s Vocations Committee joined with St. Barnabas and Saint Roch in holding last Sunday s Holy Hour and reception in which we joined in prayer and friendship with the Sisters of Saint Francis of Perpetual Adoration and the Sisters of Providence who live in the South Deanery. Thank you to Saint Mark s Sister Circle for hosting the beautiful reception that followed the Holy Hour. The sisters brought information about the history and ministries of their religious congregations and shared time with us at the reception. Let us continue to pray for the gift of vocations to the consecrated life and let us be bold and pray for vocations from St. Mark Parish! This Wednesday, February 18, we begin the season of Lent with the celebration of Ash Wednesday. Masses will be celebrated at St. Mark at 9:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. and ashes will be distributed at both Masses. The blessed ashes are a sacramental which serve as a sign of our desire to renew our lives during the forty days of Lent. Prayer, fasting and almsgiving are the traditional disciplines of Lent. As we enter this special season of our Church Year let us pray that God s grace will lead us to live our faith with greater generosity and greater authenticity. Please remember in your prayers in a very special way the men and women of our RCIA for whom Lent marks the final period of intense preparation for the celebration of the sacraments of initiation at this year s Easter Vigil. See you at Mass! A. Consecrated life and religious life are synonymous. The Church uses the term consecrated life to refer to those Christians who consecrate their lives to God for the service of the Church through the vows of poverty, chastity and obedience. Sometimes referred to as religious and as belonging to religious life, consecrated men and women belong to congregations or religious orders. The congregations or orders were founded by men and women who were given a special charism or gift from God to meet a need in the Church. Those drawn to share in that charism set themselves apart for this special service to the Church through their profession of the vows of poverty, chastity and obedience. The vows or evangelical counsels free a person to follow Jesus in a radical way. Following Jesus who was poor, chaste and obedient, the evangelical counsels make the consecrated life a prophetic presence in the Church and in the world. While the world would tell us that happiness is found in seeking possessions, pleasure and power, men and women in consecrated life remind us that our ultimate happiness is found in God. While all sisters, brothers and nuns are religious or part of the consecrated life, the same is not true of all priests. Only those priests who have professed vows in religious institutes or congregations are religious priests. Pope Francis who is a member of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), Archbishop Tobin who is member of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (Redemptorists) and Fr. Larry Janecik who ministers as Sacred Heart and who is a member of the Order of the Friars Minor (Franciscans) are examples of priests who are religious. They have not only been ordained to the ministerial priesthood, but also, through their vows, are members of a particular religious congregation. Diocesan priests are ordained to service in a particular diocese under the authority of the local bishop. They do not take vows of poverty, chastity and obedience but rather a promise of obedience to the bishop and his successor. This promise calls diocesan priests to live a simple life, to obey the Church s call to celibacy for her priests and to respect the authority of the bishop. Diocesan priests are not members of a religious congregation or institute. While not being irreligious, diocesan priests are not religious priests. Our parish was blessed for many years with the service of the Sisters of Saint Francis of Oldenburg, Indiana, whose charism or gift to the Church includes teaching youth. The sisters helped Monsignor Schafer found our parish school and staffed the school for several years. To them and to all who serve the Church in the consecrated life we owe a great debt of gratitude. The Year of the Consecrated Life gives us a chance to reflect on the gift of the consecrated life, to thank those who serve the Church in this way and to pray for vocations to the consecrated life.
