SAINT MARY S PARISH Second Sunday of Advent December 10, 2017 Save the Date for Bambinelli Sunday/ Blessing of the Manger/ Breakfast with Santa On Sunday, December 17th following the 10:30am Mass, we invite all of our families to take part in our Bambinelli Sunday. Each year, on the Third Sunday of Advent, children gather with their families in St. Peter's Square for "Bambinelli Sunday." The children bring with them figures of the Baby Jesus the Bambinelli from their family's Nativity scene. During the noontime prayer, the pope blesses the children and the figurines they have brought. While, we might not have the pope here to bless our Bambinelli, we will have Fr. Tom, who will bless the figurines of the Baby Jesus and all who gather with us at our outdoor Nativity scene. So don't forget to bring your Bambinello with you!

Parish Christmas Giving Tree Last year, thanks to your love and generosity, we donated over 1,000 gifts and over $2,000 in gift cards to families and children in need in our community and beyond. The Christmas Giving Tree will be in the Church and Walsh Hall beginning Thanksgiving weekend. The tree will be adorned with the gift requests and wishes of those who rely on help during the Christmas season. This year, we have received a request for Gift Cards to various stores in the amount of $25. While a gift card may not be the most fun gift to give, they are great ways to help out families at Christmas time. They allow parents to buy more personal items for their children (underwear, etc) and items for their homes (appliances, bedding, etc). They also allow teenagers and young adults to purchase things that fit their unique styles and tastes. We ask that you again be as generous as possible to help make Christmas a wonderful time for these children, teenagers and adults in need. Helping those in need is simple, but very much appreciated: 1. Take a tag from the tree, 2. Purchase the requested gift (gifts should be new), 3. For Groups 1, 2, 3: Wrap the gift and secure the tag to the outside, so that we can get it to the appropriate person. If it is a gift card, please be sure to put the amount on it. For Groups 4 and 5: Please return gifts unwrapped in a bag with the tag inside. Gift cards should be sealed in an envelope with the tag inside. 4. Return the gift to the church by Friday, December 15, to allow time for sorting and delivery. This year your kindness will help children and adults from the following agencies: 1. Adopt-a-Family of Nutley - Bells 2. Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Newark - Snowmen 3. Children in Foster Care Blue Ornaments 4. York Street Project of Jersey City - Mittens 5. Covenant House, New Jersey Red Stockings Advent Parish Penance Service - Tuesday, December 19 th at 7pm We spend a lot of time getting our homes ready for Christmas. Don't forget to take a few moments to prepare your heart for this blessed time of the year too! Join us for a night of prayer, meditation and the opportunity to receive God's healing grace in the Sacrament of Penance. 656 Page 3

As it is written in Isaiah the prophet: Behold, I am sending my messenger ahead of you; he will prepare your way. Mark 1:2 This line from Mark s gospel illustrates a pattern of prophecy and fulfillment that will continue throughout the upcoming weeks. John the Baptist is the voice crying out in the wilderness of which Isaiah foretells. Jesus is the shepherd who feeds his flock and gathers the lambs with care. While scripture scholars continue to argue over when and who wrote these scriptural accounts the following timeline might prove helpful: o 742 B.C. 3O A.D -60 A.D. Isaiah Jesus Ministry Book of Mark Isaiah began his prophetic ministry over 700 years before the birth of Christ. o Mark s gospel was the first gospel recorded about 30 years after Jesus died. (Contrary to the popular phrase: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John ) Today s music highlights the beautiful images contained in Isaiah s prophecy. It speaks of the voice crying out in the wilderness as well as the promised comfort and well-being of God s Kingdom. The prelude (A Voice Cries Out) has been selected to help us transition from whatever held our attention prior to mass to the prophecies of Isaiah which we will be proclaimed during the liturgy of the word. Our procession will be accompanied by instrumental music to accentuate advent s being a season of preparation and expectation. We respond to the penitential rite singing Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel Shall come to thee O Israel praising God for the gift of forgiveness in Jesus. I urge you to continue a liturgical new year s resolution of openness, attentiveness, transformation and preparedness. Be receptive to the gift of God s saving Word and loving presence.
