Story of James W. Anderson The Jackson Co. Family History Book 200 Years of Memories presented by the Jackson Historical Society 1996 pg. 49 author, Gordon R. Ghareeb My great -great -grandfather, James William Anderson, was a big man with blue eyes, blond hair, and a fair complexion. He was born on Blackburn s Fork on February 6, 1844; his parents were William Short Billy Anderson and Polly Lynn Anderson. He told of his Civil War experiences as follows: I enlisted in the Confederate Army. I was not conscripted, but they were threatening to take up everybody and do something with them when I went in. I laid out a few weeks to keep from going in and then decided to go in and stay with them until I could get a good chance to leave there, and I did this. I served in the Confederate Army about five or six months and then came home on furlough and never went back any more. After witnessing the horrors of war, my great-great-grandfather came to believe that the Union was indeed worth saving. To this end he enlisted with the Federal forces and once more marched off to battle. For his service in Company B of the 8 th Tennessee Mounted Infantry, Corporal James W. Anderson would always be known as Blue Jim. In 1868 he married Susannah Allen, daughter of George and Francis Gray Allen, and they bought a small farm and mill where the Long Branch empties into the Roaring River. There they raised 9 children: Mary, Ned, Martha, James, John, George, Dona, Florence May, and Dora. Upon the death of her husband, Mrs. Allen came to live with the Andersons. Susannah died in 1908. Her funeral was conducted at the house and burial was on the banks of Long Branch Creek. Blue Jim was stricken with pneumonia in the winter of 1910, and his condition steadily worsened. Dr. S. B. Fowler called at the house every day and made his last days as comfortable as possible. He died quietly on April 1, 1910 and was buried alongside his wife on the bank of the creek. Florence May Anderson married Abner Cleveland Chaffin of Talley s Hollow in 1907. Their firstborn child, Grace Ethel, was born in 1908; she was my grandmother. Abner Cleveland Chaffin was the son of James Monroe Chaffin and Matilda Dudney. Abner Cleveland was born 22 February 1886. Abner and Florence (my great grandparents whom I knew and loved dearly) had six children: Grace Ethel (my grandmother), Grady, Bonnie, Carman, Edith Amy and

Fred Chaffin. All are gone now except Aunt Edie who is going strong at 86 as of 2003. The old mill has long since disappeared and the farmhouse burned down, but standing here where he lived and worked, I can still feel his presence. His blood flows in my veins, and I am proud to say I am the great-great-grandson of James W. Anderson. Anderson, Thomas Shirley Sr. b. 8 February 1779, Cumberland Co., VA d. 8 October 1853, Blackburn Fork, TN or d. 1855/8 s/o William & Catherine (Shirley) Anderson Buried: Blackburn s Fork, Jackson Co., TN md ca. 1807, Judith Robinson of Jackson Co., TN b. 9 May 1785, probably Cumberland, VA d. 5 November 1868 d/o Edward Robinson Jr. & Ann (Meador) Robinson Thomas and Judith arrived in Jackson Co.,TN sometime after July of 1806. Moving with them were Thomas brother Garland and his family, Judith s parents and several of her brothers and sisters. The date into Tennessee is arrived at because Garland had a son Edward born in VA in July of 1806. They settled on Blackburn s Fork in Jackson Co.TN Thomas Shirley received several land grants from the State of Tennessee in Jackson County. Thomas became a very wealthy farmer for his day because he gave at least three of his sons and one of his sons-in-law enough money to purchase land in the Silver Point area. And at his death he had between 259 and 300 acres of land along with 12 negroes.
