Page 2 With Burning Hearts We Proclaim the Good News July 2, 2017 PRAYER FOR PRIESTS Well, here we are, my first bulletin as your new pastor. I d like to start by saying thanks to Fr. Gérard for all of the work he has done here over the last 6 years. So much of what he has done has helped me step into my new ministry with a well administered and pastored church and school in other words, a parish. Also, I d like to thank Fr. Carlos for his work in the parish, in particular with the Hispanic community. I am blessed to have Fr. Carlos here to help with our Hispanic brothers and sisters. So, as you can see, I am calling this little corner, The Eagle s Nest. That is because our school s sports team s mascot is an eagle and also St. John Eudes took a special interest and love for the Gospel of John and the symbol of the Gospel of John is an eagle. Although I plan to write in this space with some regularity, I also would like to invite others to write here too. I d like to hear from as many people as possible, including people who have been in the parish for many decades, our ever growing Filipino community as well as the Hispanic community, school parents, or even kids. We also have some folks from different areas of Africa, Asia, Europe and well all over the world really. I think there might even be a Canadian or two. We want to hear from you! When I found out I was going to become the pastor here I was at once excited and scared. It s a big and complicated parish. I quickly learned not to be too scared because of you. The support I have received from so many parishioners has helped me so much. It s becoming more and more apparent how much this parish is held together by the good will and dedication of the parishioners. Your support and love for your parish has been a great encouragement for me. We have a dedicated staff and a whole bunch of committed volunteers here at SJE who have been doing a fine job of administering the resources of the church and school, seeing to catechetical/evangelical/devotional needs and of course, the maintenance of the physical plant too. Needless to say, I am so happy to be here with you and I m hopeful and excited to think about the future of our parish. There are already so many good things going on here and yet there is always potential for new and exciting ideas. Together for the Mission is a tag line that the Congregation of Jesus and Mary has relied on to help us envision our ministry for a long time. We all really are at our best when we are Together for the Mission. Please pray for the following priests this week: July 2 Rev. Patrick Adah, St. John Baptist de la Salle, Catholic Church, Granada Hills July 3 Rev. Francis Benedict, O.S.B., St. Andrew s Abbey and Retreat House, Valyermo July 4 Rev. Page 6 With Burning Hearts We Proclaim the Good News July 2, 2017 Hello SJE Eagles, On June 12 th Sean Aguilar one of our 7 th grade students was hit by a car while riding his bike near his home. Thankfully he escaped any head injuries even though he was not wearing a helmet. He did break a leg and is pretty scratched up. He was up and on his bike before his dad, Todd, could tell him to put on his helmet. Stephanie his mom said that Sean regrets not wearing his helmet. All in all, a very scary life lesson for Sean. Five Reasons to Wear a Bike Helmet by Andrea Cespedes Prevent Head Injury "American Family Physician" reports that head injuries cause the most fatalities and long-term disabilities when it comes to cycling accidents. Approximately 22 to 47 percent of injured cyclists experience head injuries, which are also responsible for 60 percent of all bike-related deaths. A study published in the "Canadian Medical Association Journal" in 2012 looked at the deaths of 129 cyclists between the years 2006 and 2009. The researchers found that not wearing a helmet greatly increased the risk of sustaining a fatal head injury. In a meta review of six studies published in the "Cochrane Library" in 2008, researchers found statistically significant decreases in mortality and head injuries occurred in places that instituted helmet laws. An earlier 2007 review of studies on head injury and helmet use published in "Injury Prevention," concluded that helmets provide a 63 to 88 percent reduction in the risk of head and brain injury for all ages of cyclists. Set an Example Adults, especially parents, who wear helmets when riding set a good example for kids. In the "Journal of Safety Research," a study published in 2010 found that from 2001 to 2003, just 48 percent of 5- to 14-year-olds wore bike helmets when riding. This age group is at the highest risk of bicycle-related injuries. Older children may be reluctant to wear helmets because they look uncool or are uncomfortable. If you don't wear one, kids will have trouble seeing the value and importance of wearing a helmet. Visibility Riding on the road in traffic presents numerous hazards. Oftentimes, accidents occur because drivers don't see the cyclist. A bike helmet with reflective strips can make you more visible to motorists, especially in the pre-dawn or early evening hours. Choose a brightly colored helmet so drivers can see you better during the day as well. Weather Protec on You might not plan to ride in the middle of a storm, but weather can be unpredictable -- especially if you are riding a lengthy distance. Wearing a helmet also protects you from weather hazards, including intense sun, hail and rain. Some manufacturers also sell winter helmets that help keep you warm if you ride in frigid temperatures. Avoid a Ticket Universal bicycle helmet laws do not exist in the United States. However, 21 states, including California, and the District of Columbia have helmet laws that apply to riders younger than 16 years. Some local ordinances do require helmets be worn by all riders, regardless of age. Make wearing a helmet a habit so you are always in compliance with the law no matter where you are riding.

Page 7 With Burning Hearts We Proclaim the Good News July 2, 2017 POPE S INTENTIONS FOR JUNE LAPSED CHRISTIANS: That our brothers and sisters who have strayed from the faith, through our prayer and witness to the Gospel, may rediscover the merciful closeness of the Lord and the beauty of the Christian life. DID YOU KNOW? Creating boundaries for mobile phones... Parents and caregivers may be more inclined during summertime to allow children to use mobile phones, especially when school is not in session. Consider the following tips to establish boundaries and help keep children safe when using a mobile phone: Contact service provider to block internet access and calls from unapproved phone numbers. Designate certain times that cell phone must be turned off (family meals, school hours, after 10 p.m.) Insist that parental permission is required for the download of any and all apps.
