How did Buddhism Spread?

Teachings of the Buddha

Teachings of the Buddha Buddha traveled throughout northeastern India for several decades, spreading his philosophy to anyone who was interested, regardless of gender or caste.

WHERE DID BUDDHISM SPREAD?

Reason it spread: Accepting and open-minded belief system and Siddhartha spreading his message.

Buddha and the caste system He lived a non-vedic life, parentage did not matter. Believed karma was ethical manner of thought, deeds, and words, a code of behavior. Criticized members of higher caste for their actions.

Where it spread: Sri Lanka, Burma, Thailand, Indo-China and other South East Asian countries. Also, spread north into Tibet, Mongolia and other parts of Central Asia, and also into China, Korea and Japan.

How did it spread: Buddhist monks traveling around Asia spreading Buddha s message.

The Importance of the Silk Road Buddhism was able to spread because of the silk road, an ancient trade route.

EMPEROR ASHOKA HELPS BUDDHISM SPREAD In the 3rd century BCE Indian Emperor Ashoka converts to Buddhism. Adopting a code of nonviolence, he renounced all warfare and incorporated principles of Buddhism in his ruling practices. Sends Buddhist monks to convert others to Buddhism.
