From the Desk of..ann Hook Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time September 9, 2018 This week our second reading is from the Letter of James. The letter reminds us that we are not saved by faith alone. Faith is empty unless it is put into action. It is uncertain which of the three men in the Gospel named James is the author. However, many scholars think that he is the one referred to as the brother of Jesus. He became a leader of the early Jewish Christian community in Jerusalem. In today s second reading, James warns the Jewish Christian communities against discriminating on the basis of social rank or wealth. Jewish law and the teachings of Jesus forbad discrimination. James reminds the communities to treat others with dignity and respect, to act justly towards all. Today this ideal of treating everyone with dignity, respect, and justice regardless of race, creed, place of birth, or wealth is known as Social Justice. The Catholic Church is rich is teachings of social justice. This is known as Catholic Social Teaching (CST) and is grounded in: Sacred Scripture; Teachings of Church Leaders; and Sacred Tradition. Catholic Social Teaching directs us as people of faith to live the Gospel message in a troubled world. For example, one aspect of CST has to do with how we treat the poor and is known as the Preferential Option for the Poor and Vulnerable. In a homily delivered on October 11, 1984, Saint John Paul II said that God shows the poor his first mercy. In his Apostolic Exhortation The Joy of the Gospel (2013), Pope Francis tells us, I want a Church which is poor and for the poor. We must become one with the poor, befriending the poor, listening to them with the ears of our heart so as to understand. With this understanding we should be advocates for the poor in matters of social justice. Pope Francis reminds us that We are called to find Christ in them. As we reflect upon today s reading, we should honestly ask ourselves how do we serve the poor. Do I discriminate? Am I hospitable or judgmental to the stranger? Do I listen with the ears of my heart? Do I seek to understand? Do I try to create a place in my heart for others to be? Peace, Ann MINISTRIES & SPECIAL CLASSES THE SAN MIGUEL GIFT SHOP IS OPEN DAILY MONDAY THRU THURSDAY 10:00 AM TO 4:00 PM & FRIDAY 10:00 AM TO 12:00 NOON Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament: Every Friday following the 9:00 am Mass until Noon.
