OUR LADY OF LORETO PARISH JUNE 19, 2016 COFFEE AND Every Sunday after the 8 am and 10 am Masses. Please join us!!! Volunteers are needed Call Elaine Beaudry @ 508-835-4592 if you would like to be part of the team. God our Father, we give you thanks and praise for fathers young and old. We pray for young fathers, newly embracing their vocation; may they find courage and perseverance to balance work, family and faith in joy and sacrifice. We pray for fathers around the world whose children are lost or suffering. May they know that the God of compassion walks with them in their sorrow. We pray for men who are not fathers but still mentor and guide us with fatherly love and advice. We remember fathers, grandfathers and great grandfathers who are no longer with us but who live forever in our memory and nourish us with their love. Amen. YEAR OF MERCY Some time ago a man came to our house and said: Mother, there is a Hindu family that has eight children. They have not eaten for a long time. Do something for them. So I took some rice and went. When I arrived at their house, I could see the hunger in the children s eyes. I gave the rice to the mother. She took it and divided it into two, and then she went out. When she came back, I asked her, Where did you go? She said, They are hungry also. Her neighbors were also hungry. What struck me most was not that she gave the rice but she knew they were hungry. Because she knew, she shared. I did not bring more rice that night. I waited until the next morning so that they could experience the joy of sharing and loving. Love, to be true, has to hurt, and this woman who was hungry she knew that her neighbor was also hungry. That family happened to be a Muslim family. It was so touching, so real. This is where we are most unjust to the poor we don t know them. We don t know how great they are, how lovable, how hungry for that understanding love. Today God loves the world through you and me. Are we that love and compassion? Mother Teresa SAVE THE DATE!!! Mark Your Calendar Mon., June 20-10:00 am 4:00 pm UMass Care Mobile @ Loreto Tues., June 21-7:00 pm Knights of Columbus @ Loreto Center Kenyan Priest to Visit Our Lady of Loreto Fr. Anthony Mutio of the Diocese of Kitui in Kenya will speak at all Masses next weekend - June 25 and 26. The Diocese of Kitui has a population of 1.1 million of whom about 20% are Catholic. It is among the five poorest dioceses in Kenya. The poverty level stands at 70% with malnutrition being reported at 52%. The main source of livelihood for the people in this region is marginal agriculture and tending to crops and livestock. With a vicious cycle of famine, most of the people find it difficult to absorb the devastation of droughts, making it an area that is perpetually on food relief. The Diocese has 26 parishes and 80 indigenous priests. We ask for your generosity in your support of the good work of Fr. Mutio and the Diocese of Kitui. Rest in Peace We, the parish communities of Our Lady of Loreto and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel extend our deepest sympathy to the families and friends of Helen Dunkerton. May God grant her peace forever and bring comfort to her family and friends. VISITATION HOUSE BABY BOTTLE DRIVE Thanks to all who returned your baby bottles to support this important ministry. Dear Friends, FROM THE PASTOR S DESK We were greeted again this week with the horrifying news of mass murder, this time in Orlando, Florida. We pray for the victims of these senseless shootings and destruction of human life. As I ve said before, sadly, we are a country that doesn t respect life. Just witness the indiscriminate and widespread practice of abortion in our country. Since the Supreme Court Decision Roe V. Wade in 1973, which allowed for legal abortion in all fifty states, over 60 million unborn babies have been murdered legally in our country. Their only crime was to be conceived! As Blessed Mother Teresa once said in a commencement address at Harvard University, Any country that allows for the killing of its unborn children is spiritually and morally bankrupt. We as a country have moved away from God. We have adopted laws and practices that mock God and His law. I pray everyday for our country and I fear for our future because we have forgotten God and rebelled against His will for us. Many of these murderers say that are killing in the name of God. That is very warped thinking. For anyone to kill in the name of God is at the very least blaspheming or at the worst thoroughly evil. Let us pray often for our country. Let us show God that He is a very important part of our lives. Regular attendance at Mass and return to the sacraments is key to our spiritual lives as Catholics. We must witness to our faith in Christ by our words and behavior. To change our country to be more loving and respectful, we need to start with ourselves. Monsignor Pedone PARTNERS IN CHARITY Again this year we are asked to assist the Diocese in its charitable and educational outreach to the people of Worcester County. This appeal is a vital lifeline for many throughout the Diocese and allows our parish members to assist in the Church s mission. Special Partners in Charity appeal envelopes can be found in the pews. You can either mail your gift to the Chancery Office or drop it in the collection basket. Our goal this year is $56,700.00. So far, you as a parish community have donated or pledged $43,521 toward our goal. We need to raise $13,179 to meet our goal. Please be generous. MOUNT CARMEL CHURCH BUILDING As many of you know by now, the City of Worcester s Historical Commission has denied a waiver that would have allowed the church to be demolished in the near future. The Diocese and the parish sought this waiver because in its present condition the building is unsafe and the costs to make it so are prohibitive. These costs would present a financial hardship to the parish. We must now spend $210,000 to make the façade of the church safe. Because our savings are literally exhausted, we must borrow most of this money from the Diocese. There is no guarantee that these repairs will work or that need for additional repairs will be not discovered. Also, these façade repairs do not touch the church s interior, which is also not safe, given the falling paint and plaster, including the recent collapse of a rosette from the ceiling which crashed to the floor near the altar. I will not reopen the church unless it is declared thoroughly safe inside and out by the Department of Inspectional Services by the City of Worcester and with Bishop McManus permission. I recently met with members of the Mount Carmel Preservation Society, who have promised to begin a campaign to raise sufficient monies within a year to repair the church building, so that hopefully it can be reopened. The cost of such repairs and restoration are in the millions of dollars. This will be a monumental task for them, and I wish them well. I am still hopeful that all members of both parishes will continue or begin to worship at Our Lady of Loreto Church. Monsignor Pedone MOUNT CARMEL CHURCH BUILDING RELIEF MOULDING AND CROSS Ed Amorello and his crew ran into a glitch moving the pictorial moldings and cross which were atop the façade of the church. They have to use special equipment to prevent snapping the molding. It will be moved as soon as possible, along with the cross, and placed in storage.
