Page Three Pope John XXIII Church, Liverpool, New York May 20, 2018 Father O Brien This past weekend I announced that Fr. James Fritzen, pastor of our neighboring parish Christ the King, would be retiring on June 30th. Since the beginning of the reconfiguration process of the Diocese some years ago the plan was that when either Fr. Fritzen or I retired the two parishes would be linked and there would be one pastor for both parishes.. For reasons of age and a belief that the linkage would best be served by a priest who was not connected to either church and was able to make a three to five year commitment I have informed the Diocese that I would not apply to be pastor of both parishes. The normal process to replace a pastor will begin this week with notices to all priests of the Diocese inviting them to apply for the pastorate of Christ the King effective July 1st with the understanding that they would also become pastor of Pope John XXIII when I retire at the latest this time next year. I asked to remain as pastor of Pope John XXIII until next spring and help with the transition and the Diocese agreed. I will use the bulletin, our newsletter and the pulpit to keep everyone informed as the process goes forward. HOPE Appeal 2018 The 2018 HOPE Appeal Commitment weekend will be this weekend Saturday and Sunday, May 19/20, in our parish. The theme, in this Year of the Family, is As family all are called to serve - each other, our church and our community. Your contribution to the HOPE Appeal helps us fund many programs that strengthen and support diocesan families and funds many other essential programs and services. We ask that all pledge forms and gifts be returned next weekend to the parish. You can also make a secure online gift at www.syrdio.org. Your support helps many in our diocese. On Sunday, June 17th there will be a discernment process at the 10:30 AM Mass to fill the four vacancies on the Pastoral Council. The terms of Paula Picciotto, Dawn-Marie Rau, Marty Quinn and Randy Steffen expire in June. Any parishioner interested in serving on the Pastoral Council is invited to submit their name to Father O Brien by June 11th. The selection of the four new members will take place by lottery as part of the discernment process at Mass on June 17th. The Council meets monthly except during the summer and the term for each member is three years. The Council is an important and valuable help in developing a vision for the parish and consulting on significant decisions. The parish is grateful for those members for their dedication and service. Parishioners are invited to join this self-study group at any time but especially as they begin a new book of the bible. Participants need not have any prior education in the scripture. Anyone interested should just show up between 9:00-9:15 AM on Sunday. St. Joseph s Hospital is looking for Eucharistic Ministers for our patients. Over the past few months several of our dedicated Eucharistic Ministers had to cease their gifts of ministry, mostly due to health reasons.
