For centuries, the Chris ans of Bethlehem have earned their livings by carving olive wood religious art to sell to visi ng pilgrims. However fewer pilgrims are journeying to the Holy Land today, making it difficult for Chris an ar sans to support their families by the dignified work of their hands in the land of Christ s birth. Because of the lack of work, there has been a drama c rise in Chris an emigra on from the Holy Land. They are now less than 2% of the popula on. Since the start of its mission, Bethlehem wood carving has helped hundreds of struggling families. Your purchase will make a difference in the lives of many Chris ans living in Bethlehem. New Lay Ministry Classes Forming The 2018 2020 Lay Ministry forma on program begins this fall with sites in Arden, Lenoir, Greensboro, Charlo e and the Smoky Mountain region. Classes meet from 9 AM to 4 PM on designated Saturdays. All Catholic adults are welcome to apply. For details, contact Frank Villaronga, Director of the Diocesan Evangeliza on and Adult Educa on office, at 704 370 3274 or email frankv@charlo ediocese.org. And see the July 6 publica on of the Catholic News Herald for an in depth ar cle about Lay Ministry. Save the Date! Have you helped build or are you interested in helping to build a Habitat for Humanity House? If so, you may want to go to a Prayer Service by Habitat for Humanity on Friday, August 10 at noon. Many homes have been built with the labor and love our parishioners have given, along with many other churches and organiza ons in our area. More informa on coming! CALLED BY GOD T oday s scriptures invite us to listen to two calls. The first is the call issued by the Lord to the prophet Amos, the shepherd and a dresser of sycamores (Amos 7:14). The second is the call the Lord Jesus issued to the Twelve, whom he sent out two by two (Mark 6:7). These faithful people responded to the call, prophesying and preaching to the people to whom they had been sent. Each of us received a call when we were bap zed. The second reading invites us to ponder that call as we are reminded that we are chosen in Christ and that, in love, God des ned us for adop on (Ephesians 1:5). As adopted daughters and sons of God we are called to bring the presence of Christ into our marriages, families, schools, and places of work. Let us be inspired today to say yes to the call we hear once again through God s living word. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
