Twenty Second Sunday in Ordinary Time September 2, 2018 Twenty Second Sunday in Ordinary Time In today s Gospel of Mark, Jesus scolds the Pharisees, who were more concerned with interpreting the Law than living its purpose: to take on the mind and heart of God. The Pharisees gave God lip service, but not lived service. Evil comes from within and so does good. If the mind and heart of God are within a person, others will see the person s faith and God s ways. Living the substance of the Law and not interpreting it to suit one s needs leads to justice, that is, right relationship with God and all creation. John s Gospel message from the Bread of Life discourse is made real in Mark s Gospel today, God takes who we are and uses it wisely and wonderfully for others. So, take in the Law and live it well! Happy Labor Day! Monday, September 3 rd is a Holiday and as usual, the parish business office (rectory) and the parish Day School will be closed for business. Kind of the last hurrah of the summer! Be mindful, thoughtful and prayerful for the work of our creation, especially the Creator and celebrate the blessings received at Mass on Monday morning at 9am! The Parish Finance Council has done its due diligence these past few months and with the expertise of our Parish Business Manager, the Annual Report has been submitted to the Diocesan Finance Office and it has been received and accepted! I am putting the Report into a readable Document and it will be printed and added to the Parish Bulletin next weekend. As always, I am edified by the continued generosity of our Parish Family in, not only YOUR financial generosity, but in our year of Grateful Living, by YOUR stewardship of time and talent! Indeed we are Living Gratefully! And if you have any questions about the Annual Report, please get in touch with me and/or one of the Finance Council Members! Thanks! KEEPING YOU IN THE LOOP: The CAPITAL ROOF PROJECT continues. I am HAPPY to announce that the School Roof that is all the flat roofs of the Day School have been replaced and all the soffits have been covered and sealed and all is COMPLETE! $235k dollars later and not a leak ANYWHERE! THANK YOU for your generosity. And now we are on to replace the Fr. Garrity Center Roof at a cost of $135k. Like the School roof, West Side Roofing will remove all the stones (which have been a cause to the leaking issues), remove all the old roofing material, build up the sides to aid in proper drainage and replace the entire roof with the TPO product that is guaranteed for 20 years. I have to ask you to EXTEND our Capital Envelope of $25 a month for 3 years, to cover the cost of the Fr. Garrity Center roof. Costs have risen in the project time-line. And once the Fr. Garrity Center roof is complete, West Side Roofing will move on to repair and replace the Church roof (hopefully sometime NEXT YEAR)! There s a LOT of roof over our heads and I pray you will continue to financially support the project! THANKS in advance for ALL YOU DO for St. Mary! I give thanks for your generosity and faithfulness to the financial stability of the Parish! Live well! Father John

Our story of the kings has finally brought us to one who tries to heed the call of the prophet. Perhaps a good reminder for us to look for the prophets in our own lives. Come join us to meet God as a God of second chances, a message we need today. No experience necessary. Bring your Bible and an open heart. Quiet Prayer This Tuesday Quiet Prayer will begin at 12:30pm. In the quiet of our hearts we will prepare ourselves to be all that God calls us to be. Come and meet with us and explore a type of prayer that allows us to listen to what God may be asking of each of us. 12 Step Spirituality 12 Step Spirituality will meet in the chapel on Thursday afternoon from 2:30pm - 4:00pm to continue our reflection on the principles of the program. The richer our spiritual lives, the stronger our recovery. Come and see if this type of meeting strengthens your program. NO SOUL LEFT BEHIND - 2018 Mother Teresa Prayer gives a clean heart Prayer will give you a clean heart, and a clean heart will be able to see God. And if you see God in each other, you will love one another. Excerpted from: Love: A Fruit Always in Season Daily Meditations by Mother Teresa (Ignatius Press 1987) Family Perspective Today Jesus teaches us what really matters are the intentions of our hearts. Bad intentions lead to angry outbursts with name calling and put downs. These are violent acts that defile our relationships. No one wins; everyone loses. Examine your heart and open it to God s love and grace. Earlier this summer, all were invited to write the first names of those who they would like to take the next step in their walk with Jesus whether by meeting Christ for the first time, returning to active participation in the Faith, or deepening their growth to holiness. The cards were distributed to Parishioners who have been praying for these individuals until Labor Day. WOW! Next Sunday, September 9 th at 7:00 pm. in the church, as a parish, we will celebrate a Community Prayer Service. Please bring the NO SOUL LEFT BEHIND cards to this prayer service. If you are unable to attend the service, please return the cards next weekend (September 8 th - 9 th ) to the basket on the stand in the sanctuary in front of the statue of Mary. THANK YOU to all who participated in this prayer experience.
