His father was a priest. Out of obedience to his parents, Macarius married. However, his wife died shortly thereafter and he withdrew into the wilderness where he spent sixty years in labor and struggle, both internally and externally for the Kingdom of Heaven. When they asked him: Why is he so thin when he eats and when he does not eat? He responded: From the fear of God. So much did he succeed in cleansing his mind of evil thoughts and his heart of evil desires that God bestowed upon him the abundant gift of miracle-working so that he even raised the dead from the graves. His humility amazed both men and demons. A demon once said to him: There is only one thing in which I am unable to overpower you. It is not in fasting; for I do not eat anything. It is not in vigils; for I never sleep. But, what is it? asked Macarius. Your humility answered the demon. Macarius often spoke to Paphnutius, his disciple: Do not judge anyone and you will be saved. Macarius lived to be ninety-seven years old. Nine days before his death, St. Anthony and St. Pachomius appeared to him from the other world and informed him that he would die within nine days, which happened. Also, before his death, Macarius had a vision in which a cherubim revealed to him the blessed heavenly world, commended his effort and his virtue and said to him that he was sent to take his soul into the Kingdom of Heaven. He died in the year 390 A.D.

ПРОСИМО МОЛИТВУ ЗА ЗДОРОВЯ - Please remember in your prayers those people of our parish who are in the hospitals, care homes and those who are shut-ins, as well as those who need our prayers. Remember, if you would like a hospital visit or to have your name published in the bulletin, you or a member of your family must call the parish office and let us know. Ways We Can Help Make our Parish Better Consider yourself an important part of the parish family: Family members share a common history and heritage. They are grounded in the same beliefs, values and traditions. They embrace new members of the family with a spirit of love and acceptance. We each are an important part thread in the fabric of the Nativity parish family, we rely upon each other for support. Be welcoming: Introduce yourself to people you don t know, especially if they are sitting alone in church or standing by themselves at coffee and donuts. Take the time to go to the parish auditorium after Divine Liturgy to meet others and share in fellowship. Use your gifts and talents for the good of the parish: God has given each of us unique gifts and talents that are intended to be shared, Any expertise, skill or talent you may have - business, finance, public relations, photography, building maintenance, or even skills like gardening, cooking, baking, cleaning was meant to be shared with others to glorify God. Attend parish events: Yes, Divine Liturgy is our central focus; but other parish ministries, activities, and events also help increase personal spirituality and build community as well. Weather it is the parish mission, a specific lecture, bible study group, outreach ministry, perogy suppers, parish dances or any other time when we come together it is an opportunity to build community and fellowship together. Support the parish financially: We all know how expensive it is just to run a household today. Our parish faces even higher costs and depends upon your consistent support to meet our budget. Prayer for our parish: Saying a Rosary, spending time in Adoration, fasting and even offering up your prayers for the parish priest and parishioners on a regular basis will bring rewards for you personally as well for our parish. No parish is perfect, and even the best parishes can improve. Imagine what could happen in our parish if every person in the parish tried just one othe the items above to make the parish better! Pope Francis revealed his frequency of the Sacrament of Penance, telling guests at his weekly general audience that he goes to confession every two weeks. Catholic News Service reports on the address here. Priests, too, need confession, even bishops. We are all sinners. Even the pope goes to confession every two weeks because the pope, too, is a sinner, he said. My confessor hears what I say, offers me advice and forgives me. We all need this.

THE END OF CHRISTMAS SEASON We usually celebrate Christmas for 40 days. So, until February 1, we will sing carols, greet one another with Khrystos Razshdaetsya Slavite Yoho Christ is Born Glorify Him The Christmas Season ends on Stritennia. Stritennia (the Ukrainian word which means "presentation") refers to the Feast of the Presentation of Our Lord in the Temple which is celebrated on February 2nd. This holyday is celebrated 40 days after Christmas and marks the end of the Christmas season. The Presentation of Our Lord in the Temple is a holyday that commemorates the offering and dedication of the baby Jesus to God's service by His mother Mary and father Joseph. On this feast, candles are blessed and distributed to the faithful. In homes, the blessed candles are lighted and placed before an icon in times of serious illness or grave danger. The Power of Encouragement Correction does much, but encouragement does more. Johann Wolfgang vo Goethe I struggle and I strive. I do it wrong. I m corrected in front of the class. I wither and I grow silent. The next day I struggle more, but this time I ask for help. I practice. Again, I do wrong. Then someone notices my determination, my willingness to keep going. You ve almost got it. Don t give up, they say. The next day, more struggles, more striving, but I work hard, promising myself I will get it. Look! You re getting closer: I am proud of you. You can do it. And finally, I do. The encouraging voice makes me feel like I can walk on water. Today I will offer someone an encouraging word, no matter how far they are from completing a project. 2013 Income Tax receipts will be ready for pick up on January 26th in the narthex. If you are new to the parish and would like to have a set of 2014 donation envelopes, please call the office at 204-453-4653. Immaculate Heart of Mary School Annual Tea Sunday, February 2, 2014 650 Flora Avenue, 1:30-4:00 pm Tea Theme: Celebrating Our Alumni The Tea will be officially opened by the Taylor Family, Krystal 75, Travis 03 and Brittney 05. An invitation is extended to all to come and visit the school. Enjoy the Bake Room and Raffles.

PATRIARCH SHEVCHUK: PEOPLE ON MAIDAN SEEKING BETTER LIFE FOR UKRAINE People on Maidan are not there for personal gain, but for new prospects for Ukraine, said Patriarch Sviatoslav Shevchuk of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. In Przemysl, the hierarch answered questions about the current situation for the publication Gość Niedzielny. I think the very fact that the Ukrainian society has managed to demonstrate its political will is already a victory, said the patriarch. In the post-soviet space, it is rare that someone not only has the guarantee of freedom, written in the Constitution and other legal acts, but can create an area of freedom for himself. However, the truth is that Maidan cannot last forever. It will not replace the regular institutions. The people who gathered on Maidan put forward three basic demands and their implementation determines how long they will stay. The people are seeking the release of all prisoners repressed for participating in a peaceful demonstration on Maidan. This demand is, in fact, already done, though the pressure on opposition supporters in the workplace, especially in universities, remains a problem. The other part is to punish those responsible for beating protesters. At the moment, only the victims are known; there is no one who would take responsibility for the use of force against the people. Related to this is the demand for the resignation of the government, which is responsible for these events. This case falls within the competence of the president and maybe it will make some desired changes. Finally, there is a demand to sign the association with the European Union. There is a chance, because Mr. Yanukovych constantly repeats that he did not change his mind, that the agreement with Brussels should be signed, but according to somewhat different terms. This refers to the fact that it would not cause economic collapse and not deepen existing economic difficulties in the country. Obviously, there is an open question on how the contracts signed recently with Russia will influence further developments. I hope that soon we will know all of the details and economists will be able to evaluate them objectively. I hope that it does not cross out the desire of Ukraine to have an association with the EU, and hinder the future pursuit of full membership, and that the West will no longer perceive us only as a post-soviet country. In Europe, much has been said about European costs, but I cannot imagine that hundreds of thousands of people came out in the winter for a demonstration for its defense. People on Maidan are not looking for personal gain, but for the prospect of a better life for the country and for future generations, because they understand that European integration is a complex long-term process. The patriarch s words were published on Katolytskyi Ohliadach.
