SSVM Missions (Servants of the Lord), spoke at our parish last weekend. The sisters began in 1988 and have grown to over 1200 sisters missioning in almost 40 countries throughout the world. This mission appeal gave them the opportunity to inform us about their missionary work in Papua New Guinea, that is in great need of support. The sisters work with children and poor families in human development, specifically providing medical care and educating in hygiene. They currently have a home for girls, where they provide for all their needs. Papua is not economically stable, so the sisters do not receive help from local people who themselves often lack the basic necessities. It is not too late to give. Envelopes are in the hymn books for you use. Please be as generous as you can! Fri Aug 24 10:00 AM ommunion @ NV

Jesus turned a lot of people off by insisting that they eat his flesh and drink his blood if they wanted to be saved. Even in his day, cannibalism was not an option. People found the thought of it repulsive. Jesus was known to make outrageous statements: like love your enemies, forgive 70 times 7 times, and blessed are the poor, etc. so they were not sure how serious he was. In a physical sense, we all know that you are not what you eat: you can have all the carrots you want, you won t turn orange; enjoy that bacon-burger, there s no danger that you ll become a pig or a cow. But in a spiritual sense, you indeed are what you eat! Let me explain! Jesus knew he could not stay physically present here on earth to every person alive in his time or everyone who would later come to life. e needed a way to be a part of the life of everyone who would ever live. The Eucharist was his solution. Just as the bread and Servers Lectors Eucharistic Ministers Greeters wine become his Body and Blood before we consume them, his Body and Blood now become part of us once we have done so. Each time we receive this precious sacrament while focusing on the one we are receiving, we become a little more like him: a little more patient, a little more kind, a little more generous, a little more forgiving, a little more compassionate, a little more loving. As these virtues steadily grow in our lives, hrist becomes more and more a part of us and is able to do so much good through us! As long as we continue to eat his Body and drink his Blood, we not only sustain this vital link with our Lord, we strengthen it and help it grow. It may be a relief to know we ll never become a loaf of bread or a cluster of grapes but it is so awesome to realize that each oly ommunion makes us more and more like the one we are receiving! You may not be what you eat but Jesus says you can be WO you eat!
