Transforming lives to break the generational cycle of incarceration since 1995. Wings 22 nd Annual Christmas Party Comments 12-10-16 Church of the Risen Savior Albuquerque, NM The 22 nd Annual Wings Christmas Party was held at Church of the Risen Savior Catholic Church. Literally thousands of gifts were given to Wings by anonymous donors, Chick-fil-a patrons, Family Life Radio listeners, and the staff at the New Mexico Corrections Department Santa Fe headquarters. We are so grateful to these businesses/organizations for their continued support and lovely gifts. Wings staff and some volunteers went into the parish hall on Friday and arranged all the beautiful gifts in a special area where only the parents got to pick out gifts, and the children didn t know they were there. On the day of the party over 40 National Honors Society students from Hope Christian Academy, Wings staff, and dozens of Wings volunteers set up for the party. Undecorated cookies were put on plates for the children to decorate with frosting and sprinkles. We are SO grateful to all the cookie bakers. The cookies are not only delicious, but every cookie is prayed over and blessed, which gives them that extra special taste! Small notebooks were out for the children to decorate and make their own. Hope Christian Academy provided angel ornaments which the children could design. Beautiful ojos were also made out of yarn. (God s eyes that become tree ornaments.) Bags of placemats, cups, napkins and pencils were prepared for each group of 10 people, as were bags of junk including old wrapping paper, ribbon, tinsel, and paper plates, to decorate one person at each table as a Human Angel. Soon the social hall was ready and guests began arriving. Ann Edenfield Sweet, Wings founder and Executive Director, led the group in mixers. People were talking to one another, laughing, learning one other s family Christmas traditions, and celebrating the season. The party started promptly at 1:00 in prayer, and then Don Shapiro, Wings Board Chairman, played his guitar and led the singing. Everyone joined in on the carols, with children and Hope students up front leading the group. Percussion instruments were distributed to everyone, and the music, laughter, and many various sounds filled the air. What a fun, wonderful time everyone had singing favorite and treasured Christmas carols. Next the social hall was transformed into a Live Nativity. Mary, Joseph, and baby Jesus were chosen and dressed in costume. Next shepherds and little sheep (all the younger boys) were outfitted. The girls were angels. We also had male and female wise people. One of the two rules at a Wings Family Day is that everyone participates, so everyone in the audience became Wings For LIFE International 2270 D Wyoming Blvd NE #130 Albuquerque, NM 87112 505.291.6412 AnnEdenfield@WingsForLIFEInternational.org www.wingsforlifeinternational.org

Everyone participated in the Live Nativity; the story of the birth of Jesus. Although there were a lot of smiles and fun, participating in the story allowed participants to actually think through how it must have been 2,000 years ago. It was a very meaningful Bible drama and helped us to focus on why Jesus birth is so important to us today. Next the children went to do crafts. Volunteers were there to assist as needed, and everyone loved decorating the cookies, making a special Christmas ornament, making ojos to decorate their own tree, making personal notebooks, and making cards with nativity stickers and scenes. While the children were making crafts, Ann and Wings staff led the adults to the gift area. Adult family members lined up numerically according to when they arrived. Each adult was given one ticket for each child they brought. Ann explained that each person would enter the room, pick out a gift, and turn a ticket into a Wings volunteer. They put their gift in a large trash bag so the children wouldn t see the gifts. The adults kept picking out gifts until all the gifts were gone. The adults then took their bag of gifts to their cars so the children didn t know they had received any gifts. The craft tables were soon cleaned off and the social hall was turned into a dining room. Servers were picked and each table received a large box of pizza, huge platter of cookies, and crystal light lemonade. Discussion leaders at each table got everyone involved in discussing the party, their personal family Christmas traditions, and people got to know one another. The food and tables were cleaned up, and then the final part of the party took place. An individual from each table whose birthday was closest to Dec. 10 was picked to be the Angel. The bag of junk was used to decorate the most beautiful angels and soon there was a room of angels, all sizes, and everyone again sang out, Alleluia. Alleluia. Laughter filled the room and everyone had experienced an early Christmas. The tables and chairs were reset for future church needs and then everyone formed a huge circle around the room. Doug Sweet closed the Christmas Party in prayer, reminding us of how blessed we were to be celebrating the Birth of Jesus and to join together in such a powerful way. Ann also thanked all the volunteers who helped, the people who provided all the gifts, and the Junior Class Hope Christian Academy National Honor students who baked all the cookies. Special thanks also was given to Hugs the Clown and her friend who face painted all the children s faces and also created animal balloons for the children The children were so excited about the face painting and the balloons. The following comments came from the participants and their words describe how meaningful the Christmas Party was for everyone. Duplicate comments were not repeated.
