The SOUTHERN CROSS Brother Knights, Recent News In the past few months, the Coral Gables Council has revitalized its athletic side, and combined forces with the Miami Council to play monthly Softball games. The past few games have been a great success, though we are still trying to get higher turnouts from the Coral Gables Council. The next game will be on April 5 th, at Epiphany. Thank you to all the Knights who came out for the Lenten Fish Fry, and for helping support the Carmelite Sisters that do so much for our Parish. The Carmelite Sisters will be giving a concert on April 19, 015, at :0 pm and 7:00 pm, at Comber Hall. Buy your tickets now at: www.carmelitesistersod.com. In older news, all our winter events were great! Thank you to all the Knights who volunteered your time and effort to make this past Christmas season truly a blessing for the children and families in our community. Lets keep this momentum going as we near our Annual Fundraiser. The Fundraiser will be on June 6, 015, at the Knights Hall. Please do your best to buy your tickets early, sell tables, and get items for the silent auction. Remember that this event funds all the work we do throughout the year. In closing, the Young Knights from our Council will be planning a series of social events in the coming months. Though under no obligation, we are trying to ensure the permanent growth of our Council and Knight s community. Vivat Jesus, Javier Enriquez, OG The Knights Watch This Knights Watch will recognize Father McGivney who founded our Order, on March 9, 198. The Vatican is currently investigating a miracle attributed to the intercession of McGivney. This follows Pope Benedict XVI s 008 decree recognizing Father McGivney s heroic virtue leading to his declaration as the Venerable Michel J. McGivney. Knightly News Issue # 1, March 015 A Trip Down Memory Lane In August 1951, the Council bowlers, led by Bob Stockdate, joined the Businessmen s Bowling League. Ever since, bowling has remained a prime source of activity, eventually growing into a 10-team K.C. League. Other sports were not forgotten; a softball team was organized, and played a series of games with the Squires and other Councils, as well as various teams in the town. I got lost but look what I found. - Excerpt from 1970s historical summary, written by an unknown brother. - Irving Berlin Day of the Unborn Child Take an opportunity to once again stand up against the evils of abortion by celebrating the International Knights of Columbus Day of Prayer for the Unborn Child. The Day of the Unborn was instituted as part of the Order s Crusade for Life, symbolizing the Knights commitment to building a culture that respects and protects every human life, from conception to natural death. To read more please pick up the February 015 edition of Knightline, Volume, Number, published by the Knights of Columbus Supreme Council. The prayer campaign finds its inspiration in Pope John Paul II s landmark encyclical Evangelium Vitae, No. 100: In this great endeavor to create a new culture of life we are inspired and sustained by the confidence that comes from knowing the Gospel of life, like the Kingdom of God itself, is growing and producing abundant fruit (cf. Mk 4:6-9). There is certainly an enormous disparity between the powerful resources available to the forces promoting the culture of death and the means at the disposal of those working for a culture of life and love. But we know that we can rely on the help of God, for whom nothing is impossible (cf. Mt 19:6). Filled with this certainty, and moved by profound concern for the destiny of every man and woman, I repeat what I said to those families who carry out their challenging mission amid so many difficulties: a great prayer for life is urgently needed, a prayer which will rise up throughout the world. Through special initiatives and in daily prayer, may an impassioned plea rise to God, the Creator and lover of life, from every Christian community, from every group and association, from every family and from the heat of every believer

Chaplain s Message This year the month of February brings us Saint Valentine s Day and the beginning of Lent. The Church of the Little Flower had a wonderful Gala for Saint Valentine s day. It was wonderful to see the couples enjoying themselves and having a good time. It made me think about what more we can do as Church to strengthen families. Perhaps it s time to make some Lenten promises that can really make a difference in our homes. Certainly, giving up chocolate and sodas can be challenging, but, even more than these superficial changes, we will need a deeper renewal of family life. Whenever I sit down with young couples to prepare them for their wedding day and their married life beyond it, I speak to them about the importance of communication. Communication is more than just deciding who is responsible for what and what the plans are for the weekend. Communication is even more than making decisions as a family, as important as that is in every household. Communication involves real intimacy. It means attending to the other. It means listening with an open heart without correcting, complaining, or offering counter arguments. It can be difficult to do. However, it is a skill that we can all develop. More often than not, most spouses are not looking for their loved ones to solve their problems for them. They want to know that there is somebody else in the world who understands. A good place to start is Jesus Christ. How would Jesus listen? How does He listen to us? How did he compassionately listen to all who spoke to Him? When we listen with the heart of Jesus, then we offer Jesus to the world. Why wouldn t we offer Him to our spouses and to our families? The spouse that is left unheard begins to share with others who do not have the best interest of the marriage in mind. The children that go unheard begin to rely on the opinions of their peers simply because they are the only ones who will listen. This Lent I challenge every one of us to grow in our ability to listen. As Knights, let us renew our families by listening to them. - Father Martin Field Agent Not another salesman. A Brother Knight.
