Journey of Faith Repent and believe in the Gospel! When we were signed with the ashes at the beginning of Lent, the priest or layperson who gave us the ashes also encouraged us with these words. Thus began our Lenten journey of repentance and renewal. The Catechumens and Candidates, as well as the rest of us, have been invited to take a good look at our hearts this Lent and to find there the things that are keeping us away from God. We are asked to repent, to bring our sins to confession and to ask for God s forgiveness so we can begin anew. The Catechumens and Candidates have spent time examining their hearts through the lens of the commandments, the Great Commandments of Loving God and loving neighbor and the Beatitudes. On Wednesday, March 15, Father John heard the First Confessions of the Candidates. The Catechumens will receive reconciliation at some time in the future, but not until after they have been baptized. That is because baptism in the first sacrament and when we are baptized all our sins our washed away. As part of their preparation to receive the sacrament of confession, the Catechumens and Candidates discussed ways to be ready to receive the sacrament. They have some thoughts to share with you. They suggest that we first take time to examine our conscience. We might perhaps spend time in Eucharistic Adoration and ask the Holy Spirit to reveal our sins to us. Here is a short examination of conscience from the group: Are things more important to me than God is? Have I blamed God for not meeting my demands? Am I attentive at Mass? Do I make a genuine effort to keep the Lord s Day special? Have I wasted the time that God has given me? Have I disrespected life? Have I ignored my neighbor s needs? Have I used creation wastefully? Have I shared gossip or used the Lord s name in vain? Have I cheated on my taxes or took a sick day when I was well? Have I ever been envious of someone and wished that they would lose it? Have I had impure thoughts? Have I chosen things over people? Have I shown mercy to those who have offended me? Once having made our examination of conscience we confess our sins to the priest. And after giving us our penance and hearing our prayer of contrition, the priest prays these words of absolution over us: God the Father of mercies, through the death and resurrection of your son, you have reconciled the world to yourself and sent the Holy Spirit among us for the forgiveness of sins. Through the ministry of the church, may God grant you pardon and peace. And I absolve you of your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Thanks be to God for His great mercy and love! 6
