This phrase begins the Torah reading for this coming weekend, which we also read on Yom Kippur morning. This passage from Deuteronomy Chapter 29 portrays the Israelites gathered together men, women, children people of all ages and from all walks of life, ready to affirm their communal bonds. These words could, just as well, describe any synagogue on the High Holy Days. It is always gratifying and heartwarming to see, at our main worship and family services, representatives of several generations sitting together to welcome the New Year. Such a scene is one of the greatest illustrations of Jewish continuity, sustaining a firm foundation in our heritage that can be taken into the future. What are the special gifts that members of all ages can bring to a congregation? Such a list might include: Enthusiasm Curiosity Spirit Commitment Optimism Ingenuity Creativity Devotion Appreciation Insight Understanding Strength Perspective Wisdom Knowledge Generosity Openness Patience Perseverance Hope As Temple Israel moves forward into another year, a combination of all of these gifts will guide us through moments of trial and triumph, times of challenge and celebration. We don t know what the coming months will bring, but we do know that our participation in community life will enable us to make real the phrase that we recite as we end each book of the Torah: Chazak, chazak, v nitchazeik Be strong, be strong, and let us strengthen one another. May we do this as partners looking with hope towards the beginning of the New Year of 5771. (Martin Luther King, Jr.) So, here we are, not only having to face the fact that Labor Day weekend is rapidly approaching. It will soon be time to let go of summer, but we are now faced with the strong possibility that we will be experiencing some effects from an approaching hurricane. Maybe Mother Nature is sending us a signal that it is not always about sun and fun. With the High Holidays rapidly approaching, it s a time to take inventory of ourselves. Do we have any second thoughts or regrets for something we did or wish we had done this past year? As Jewish people, we have an opportunity to reflect during the High Holiday period to make a commitment to ourselves as to what we will do differently in the coming year. As for myself, I have been stressing about writing my speech something that doesn t come easy to me, but I do know for sure that I will be given the opportunity to confess in front of a very large group of people some of my own shortcomings. As much as we think that we do help the world and our temple be a better place, there is always room for improvement. One thing that I can say for sure is how proud I am that our T.I. community is stepping up in a huge way to volunteer time to make sure that we are here for generations to come. As part of my speech, I will be providing more detail on that. Many thanks to the ritual committee for their work preparing for our High Holy Day worship. As we approach the fall, we can look forward to beautiful foliage, apple picking, apple pie and many other things that fall has to offer. We can also look forward to all that is offered by Rabbi Larry to our temple community with services, classes, and much, much more. Please watch the Kesher for more information. Also, please don t forget our ongoing Mitzvah Project, providing for the Dover Food Pantry to those less fortunate, particularly in this economy (with a special collection during the High Holy Days). Also, something that I myself have to think of doing as well is to volunteer time to help out at the Dover Soup Kitchen. If you don t have time to help out, a monetary donation is always appreciated. Kesher Page 5 L shanah Tovah! High Holy Day Services at Temple Israel of Dover 5771 Another year is drawing to a close, and hope springs anew for 5771. There are some exciting changes that you may notice in your Temple, including ways to make things more consistent and easier to figure out. Although there will be information available through the Kesher, the website and the Temple office, we would like to send a personal note to our members with information regarding the High Holidays. Namely, we will again be using tickets for the High Holy Days. One ticket will be for all of the services, including Rosh Hashanah Evening and Morning (first day) and Yom Kippur Evening, Morning and Afternoon. No ticket will be required for children s services and the second day of Rosh Hashanah. All adult members that are up to date on their dues plan will be issued tickets automatically via physical mail to the mailing address we have on file for you. Tickets are not required for children. If you have a child that is over 18 but attending college, they are considered a student and there is no suggested donation. Please RSVP with their name so that we can issue a ticket. If your child is no longer in high school and is not attending college, they are considered a non-student adult and a donation would be appropriate if they are not yet a member themselves. This year, the suggested minimum donation is $100 for all non-member adults. As many of you are aware and may point out, in past years this has been higher, but given the economy this suggested minimum donation seems more reasonable. As always, if you have personal financial difficulties that you have discussed with the Finance Committee and there is an arrangement you are fulfilling, then you are considered in good standing and will receive your tickets in the mail. If you have circumstances not yet privately discussed with the Finance Committee, we encourage you to do so; please contact Tammy Fascetta in the Temple Office at 603-742-3976 and she can help facilitate this. We are asking that you verify the names and number of your family that are planning to attend, by emailing templeoffice@dovertemple.org or calling the Temple. The membership committee will be contacting you to verify information for the Menorah. Tickets will also be available at the Temple when services are held that require tickets. Do not worry if you forget your tickets at home; we will have a list at the ticketing area of all members and guests that should have already received tickets. If you add a guest after August 31 st, their ticket will be ready for pick-up at the Temple during services. We are hoping to expedite the flow of people to avoid any delays. Kesher Page 8 Shanah Tovah from the Hood The Sisterhood First and foremost, the Sisterhood wishes all our members and our Temple family a sweet and good New Year. For many of our friends it will include the sweet taste of the round challahs, ordered through our Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur fund raiser. A sincere thank you goes to Ilese Stevens for organizing the program and to the Karols for offering their home (51 Morrison Lane in Dover) as the pick-up location. We thank all congregation members for purchasing these challot, thus beginning the raising of funds for the Sisterhood programs for the year. As we begin the New Year, your Sisterhood will be making plans for new and exciting programs. We are looking forward to continuing our support of Temple Israel and getting to know all the women who would like to join us. You are all welcome to become active members of this wonderful group. Our programs include, but are not limited to supporting our school s Chanukah and Purim craft fairs, Sisterhood dinners and lectures, Sisterhood Jewish crafts and get-togethers as well as fundraising activities to benefit our Temple. We will still be providing paper goods & plastic ware for our Temple kitchen, sending cards to Temple families, recognizing special life events. Sisterhood will also continue the tradition of presenting a meaningful gift our Bar/Bat Mitzvah students. Trying to make a difference in the lives of those with cancer is also a big challenge. On Sunday, September 12th the "RainDrops" team, made up of family and friends, will lace up their sneakers and join me and more than 7,000 people taking on this challenge by walking in the 22nd annual Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk to continue Lorraine's mission of making women aware of the "whispering" symptoms of ovarian cancer. Lorraine's strength gave us strength and that is why we will always walk for her. You can support Lorraine's effort to stop ovarian cancer in its early stage when treatment is most effective.
