August 12, 2018 Dear Parishioners, This coming Wednesday, August 15 is the feast of the Blessed Mother s Assumption into heaven. It s not only a holy day of obligation but our patronal feast day. To highlight this day s importance, there will be two opportunities to enroll in the brown scapular and an ice cream social at the end of the day on August 15. The 6:30 pm Mass will feature especially beautiful music and will be celebrated in the Extraordinary Form as a way to connect with what things were like for the first two centuries of St. Mary s history. Please see elsewhere in the bulletin for Mass times and more details. Thank you, again, to everyone who could join us for the parish picnic last Saturday! The picnic was moved to August partly as a way of celebrating our patronal feast day (even though I don t think I explained that very well yet!) It looked like everyone had a great time. I m sorry if you couldn t join us this year but would have liked to; hopefully you can next year! Again, a special thanks to everyone who worked so hard to make it happen we are most grateful. Our beautiful new brick wall is really taking shape! Please take a look on your way out from Mass today. And please continue to pray for the workers and that everything proceed according to God s plan. May God bless you and keep you in His care, and may the Blessed Mother intercede for you, Father Cibelli ASK THE PRIEST Continuing from last week about the secret or quiet prayers: The first of these prayers comes as preparation for the Gospel. If the deacon will proclaim the Gospel, he, first, seeks the blessing of the priest. by saying in a low voice, Your Blessing, Father. The priest says in a low voice: May the Lord be on your hearts and your lips that you may proclaim His Gospel worthily and well, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, + and of the Holy Spirit. The Deacon signs himself with the Sign of the Cross and replies: Amen. If, however, a Deacon is not present, the Priest, bowing before the altar, says quietly: Cleanse my heart and my lips, almighty God, that I may worthily proclaim Your Holy Gospel. After the proclamation of the Gospel, the Priest of the Deacon, kisses the book, saying quietly: Through the words of the Gospel may our sins be wiped away. As you can see these prayers said in a low voice are meant as a preparation for the priest or the deacon to prepare himself for the daunting task of proclaiming the Gospel of the Lord. The prayers of the priest before reading and after kissing the book are prayers asking God to cleanse him of sin so that he does not speak the WORD of God unworthily. We read in the Sacred Constitution on the Liturgy (#7) Christ is present in His word, since it is He Himself who speaks when the holy scriptures are read in the Church. Ask The Priest is a continuing feature of the Bulletin. If you have a question regarding the Catholic faith, please place your question in the box on the back table.
