Be Kind to Each Other Dear all Just recently I attended a farewell church service for a friend. During the service people asked to come forward to give a thought or a memory of their time with the person. I was surprised by some of the recollections and learned things about my friend which I had not known. My words were about the personal side of my friend and their love and care and pride for and of their own children and grandchildren. We never know a person fully, even those we believe we know really well. Bembridge of Long Ago After the reclaimation of the harbour in 1880, a ferry boat service operated during the Summer Season to the mainland calling in at Seaview to pick up passengers. This month s image shows the paddle steamers Bem bridge and the Island Queen on their winter quarters in the harbour. At this time this part of the harbour was known as the Leak. The first ferry boat was the Tynemouth but she was replaced by the Island Queen in 1881 and in 1886 the Bem bridge joined the service. There were five return sailing a day except Sundays. Due to the harbour silting up ferrys could not dock at low tide and passengers had to go to Under Tyne to pick up their ferry. A pinnace would take them out to the ferry that was waiting off shore. My grandfather Charles Woodford operated the pinnace until he was forced to retire when th First World War started in 1914, when all sevices ceased. After the end of the war the service restarted again but were not as busy as prewar and in 1924 all sevices ceased, Other steamers used on the route were the: Heather Bell, Alleyn, Lord Kitckenor [screw], Duke of York. Bembridge RNLI Lifeboat Guild News... Busy final day as coxswain for Steve Simmonds: With just six hours to go before the end of his 15 year tenure as Bembridge s lifeboat coxswain, Steve Simmonds had busy last day with the all-weather lifeboat Alfred Albert Williams in action to three separate incidents on the 30th June. Initially the lifeboat was requested to look for two jet skis somewhere between Bembridge and Hayling Island. One jet ski, having run out of fuel was being towed by the other, whilst a third jet ski had gone off to look for fuel and was last seen in Wootton Creek. On the way to the search area the lifeboat came across a small speedboat Wet and Wild which had also run out of fuel. The Alfred Albert Williams stood by whilst arrangements were made for Portsmouth RNLI s Atlantic 85 lifeboat, which was on transit from Portsmouth to Langstone Harbour, to tow the speedboat to safety. On resuming the search for the missing jet skis, the lifeboat went to the assistance of the 34 foot yacht Timitu, with a crew of four aboard, having what was thought to be a small fire in their engine. With no wind it was decided to tow the yacht into Haslar Marina at Gosport and the Alfred Albert Williams was able to return to station and was rehoused by 9.15pm Prior to this, the month had been quite busy, with a total of six shouts throughout June. The first call to action of the month occurred on the 2nd, when the Alfred Albert Williams was tasked by HM Coastguard to locate and assist the 45 foot sailing yacht Gone AWOL whose engine had failed and was drifting into the shipping lane near No Man s Land Fort, with three persons aboard. The lifeboat mechanic was put aboard and successfully manged to restart the engine. The yacht was then able to make its own way to Port Solent and the lifeboat returned to station at around 2.15pm. The next call was at 2.45 am on the 12th June, for the Alfred Albert Williams to go to No Man s Land Fort to recover a 32 year old male member of the Fort s staff, having fallen into the water and suffered a suspected broken rib and transfer the casualty to the Camber docks at Portsmouth to be handed over to the Ambulance Service. The lifeboat returned and was recovered by 5am. On 8 continued p9
continued from p7 the 18th, the Alfred Albert Williams was in action again, this time to a RIB that had broken down in Whitecliff Bay. Having launched at 5.10pm, it was soon found that the problem could not be rectified and so the RIB was towed at a brisk pace to Bembridge harbour and berthed against the visitor s pontoon. The lifeboat was re-housed by 7pm. A fruitless search by the Alfred Albert Williams was carried out six days later at 4.30pm on the 24th at the request of Solent coastguard to assist in the search for a missing boat or person who had been heard on VHF Channel 16 calling for help. Having carried out a search in the area around Seaview and with nothing found the lifeboat was released by the Coastguard and returned to station by 5.50pm. On the 26th, having launched for the Tuesday evening training, the Alfred Albert Williams was requested by Solent Coastguard to investigate a report of two people having been cut off by the tide on Ryde Sands. Having reached the area, it was found that the pair had managed to make their own way to safety. The lifeboat then continued with the original training exercise. All change at the helm at Bembridge: After 15 years as Bembridge Lifeboat s full-time coxswain and with too many shouts under his belt to even think about, Steve Simmonds retired from the post at the end of June.Steve joined the Service in 1987 and spend three years training new crews on the RNLI s Atlantic class lifeboats before taking up the post of full-time coxswain in 2003. As mentioned above, Steve s last day was unusually busy, but now he plans to be able to spend more time fishing and travelling with wife, Lyn in their motorhome, together with their dog, Millie. Steve is succeeded in the post of coxswain by former lifeboat mechanic Guy Willing, who has a seafaring pedigree, having been in the lifeboat service at Bembridge for 14 years in total, in both the inshore and all-weather lifeboats and has been involved in around 150 rescue operations. e has also been a pilot boat skipper for Associated British Ports for a number of years. Guy is an experienced long distance solo sailor, having taken part in a number of long-distance sailing races over the years. Steve Simmonds Guy Willing 10 continued p11

Bembridge Lifeboat Open Day, Saturday, 11th August: The Bembridge Lifeboat Station Open Day, once again promises to be a fascinating and exciting day out for all the family on Saturday, 11th August. From 11am to 4.30pm, the lifeboat station at Lane End will be open for visitors to view the inshore and all-weather lifeboats at close quarters and see the history of the lifeboat service on displays at the offshore boathouse. Members of the crew and Lifeboat Guild will be on hand to answer questions and explain how the lifeboats operate and respond to an emergency. The RNLI shop will be open all day and there will be stalls selling books, jewellery, bric-a-brac and all manner of goods on the green by the car park. The Lifeboat Guild will be providing teas, coffee and refreshments from their stall, including home-made cakes and sandwiches throughout the day. In conjunction with the RNLI s Respect the Water campaign, the RNLI Sea Safety stand will be present with information on how to keep safe in a marine environment with the Station s Coastal Safety Officer on hand to offer advice. Boat users will be able to bring their lifejackets along to be checked for safety and seaworthiness. There will be activities for youngsters where as well a throwing the line contest, they will be able to dress up in a junior lifeboat crew kit and maybe become involved in lifeboats through the RNLI s Storm Force junior membership scheme. From the viewing gallery in the offshore boathouse, visitors will be able to watch the all-weather lifeboat launch, when at midday, it is planned to have a demonstration launch and display of both lifeboats, with a simulated rescue in front of the boathouse (subject to operational availability). As always, the event is entirely free, with all money from donation, RNLI sales and refreshments going directly towards the lifeboats, helping to Save Lives at Sea. Bembridge Art Society Appley Tower by John R Hunter During June and part of July members of BAS have been painting various views from the shores of our Island. We have been blessed with fabulous weather! What a change from last year. We visited Duver Marina, then Bembridge War Memorial corner where some of us were entertained to coffee in Yvonne Richard's garden as well! The following week we went to Sandown beach at the Yaverland end where, after a misty start, the sun came out all day! Our next event was a visit to Appley Tower on Ryde beach, as pictured above.. Another grand day. Some of us found pink in the Tower stones! This item seems to have been built for artists! Next was a very hot and windy day at Compton car park with it's great views of the cliffs westward to the end of the island, at the Needles, and the sea beyond. At the time of writing our next visit is yet to come at Shanklin Seafront at the fisherman's cottage end with its views of Luccombe. All these visits have provided good inspirational subjects for artists, as they did for the famous Victorian artists in the past. Hopefully we shall see some of our work in our next Summer exhibition. The dates for our Summer Exhibition are as follows Sunday 5 th August till Saturday 11 th 9.30 am till 5pm. Please come! We will also hold a Preview evening for invited guests on Saturday 4 th August at 6.30pm. Churchyard at St Luke s The churchyard at St Luke s has effectively been closed to burials for many years, but the legal formalities were never completed. In order to regularise the situation, we are required to publish the following notice: Closure of St Luke s Cemetery, Bembridge, Isle of Wight. Notice is hereby given that it is the intention of the Secretary of State for Justice, acting on an application by the incumbent and churchwardens, to apply to the Privy Cpuncil for an Order requiring the discontinuance of burials in the above churchyard. Provision would be made for the following exceptions: a) in any vault or walled grave in the churchyard, burial~ may be allowed but every coffin in such vault or grave must be separately enclosed by stonework or brick work properly cemented; b) in any existing earthen grve in the churchyard, the buria may be allowed of the body of any member of the family of the person or persons previously buried in that grave, but no part of the coffin containing the body shall be less than one metre below the level of the surface of the ground adjoining the grave; and c) in any grave space in which no interment has previously taken place, the burial may be allowed of any person for whom, or any member of the family for which that grave space has been reserved and appropriated, with the exclusive right of burial there, but no part of the coffin containing the body shall be less than one metre below the level of the surface of the ground adjoining the grave. News... In addition to our Sunday observance, there are certain days throughout the year when Catholics must attend Mass. These days are known as Holy Days of Obligation. One of the most important of these Feast Days takes place on 15 th August. It is the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Pope Pius XII declared that the immaculate Mother of God, the ever-virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul to heavenly glory. In many parts of the world this day is a national holiday with religious parades and festivals. The great prayer of Mary is The Magnificat (Lk 1:46-55). It begins: My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour for he has looked with favour on his lowly servant. From this day all generations will call me blessed: the Almighty has done great things for me, holy is his Name. He has cast down the mighty from their thrones, and has lifted up the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty. Windmill WI The month of June at Bembridge Windmill WI was as ever busy and full of beautiful sunshine for members to enjoy. Whether it was taking part in the many activities on offer at our own WI, joining together with those on offer at various other WIs on the Island, or just enjoying the countryside around, pottering in the garden and of course following all that great advice from Chris at Busy Bee at our May meeting looking after those hanging baskets!!! Members of our Craft Club enjoyed their meeting held at the beginning of July which as usual was full of lively chatter, tea and of course needles and pins too! Topical Talk Club met and as always a Group much enjoyed by everyone who takes part with great opportunities for lively debate and amiable discussions on lots of different and current topics. Book Club members enjoyed their meeting held at the end of June reviewing and discussing their current book which as always proved to be an enjoyable evening Members love the opportunity to meet up for the ever popular Breakfast Club for a tasty breakfast and socialising and for the month of June it took place at The Bakery in the village. Gill, our President, thanked all those members who had helped in some way at our own successful Coffee and Cake Fundraiser held in the Village Hall towards the end of June and also mentioned that WI Federation needed volunteers and cake donations from WIs for the WI Tea Tent at The Isle of Wight Show on the 8th July. Gill invited members to join with members of Brading WI for a round of fun Golf and tea afterwards next month. Also that a possible outing, with more details to follow, was being planned, for next January for members to see Gary Barlow s show Calendar Girls at the Mayflower Theatre. She reported too, that following a successful grant from Dragon s Den we hope to purchase our own Kurling set which will result in regular members monthly sessions being planned and offered from September, so lots still to look forward to in the coming few weeks. Members then settled down to listen and enjoy a talk from our Speaker for the evening, Sue Douglas from Binka Embroidery, who gave an interesting talk on how she had progressed from learning embroidery with her grandmother to working with a variety of fabrics and combining quilting to make beautiful pictures. She had brought a number of her creations with her for the members to see. Sue then answered several questions from members at the end of her enjoyable talk. A lovely evening. continued p27 26
continued from p25 Members were reminded that July s meeting was to be our annual Garden Party evening and that Posh Frocks were the order of the day this year!!! Everyone was really looking forward to it as an Opera singer and Accompanist had been booked to lead everyone in our Last Night of the Proms singing so together with delicious refreshments to be served throughout the evening, the BBC Proms season may well have a rival evening here in Bembridge perhaps!!!! There is not a Monthly Members Evening Meeting in August but we meet again on September 17th at The Cloisters when Bryn Davis from Amnesty International will be our Speaker for the evening. Saturday 25th August - 99th Annual Show Opening 2.30pm - Presentation of Awards 4.30pm At our annual show there are classes for Flowers, Fruit and Vegetables and for Floral Arrangements which are open to anyone to enter BETH CHATTO GARDENS There the plants had to survive without watering. Much of it was experimental and a case of trial and error, but the result was a great success as the photo shows. On 13th May the 94-year-old plantswoman and garden designer Beth Chatto died. She was the winner of ten gold medals at the Chelsea Flower Show but her greatest achievement was the garden she made at her home near Colchester in Essex. There she rose to the challenge of creating a garden in a windswept and arid location, and pioneered the concept of planting the right plant in the right place. Using plants which are naturally adapted to the conditions in our gardens seems normal to us today but back in the 1960s this was a new approach to gardening. In the 1990s, as a response to hosepipe bans, Beth created a dry gravel garden in what had once been a car park. 33 THINGS TO DO IN AUGUST 1. August is a good time to divide bearded irises. Each section should have a fan of leaves with a 4 (10cm) section of rhizome attached and good roots. 2. Harvest onions when the foliage collapses, and leave them to dry off in a shed or greenhouse. 3. Ponds can quickly get clogged up with oxygenating plants, so this is a good time to thin it out and to clear any blanket weed. 4. Conifer hedges should be trimmed back this month. If you leave it any later, there is a risk of die-back. 5. If you re growing pumpkins or squashes, remember to lift them off the soil while they ripen
