February 2017 De Soto United Methodist Church Volume 24, Issue 2 Living Water Inside this issue: Pastor 1 Mr Stinky Feet Concert 2 Children & Family 3 Youth 4 Fat Tuesday : 5 Dinner & Auction February Activities 6 Lenten Study: John 6 UMM, UMW 7 About Us 8 From the Pastor Over the past several weeks my wife and I have enjoyed watching the NBC drama This Is Us. In its first season it details the complicated family life of the Pearsons. Intercutting scenes from the past and the present, the show demonstrates the complexities of families, including sibling rivalries, the effects of adoption, the difficulties of parenting while dealing with your own personal issues, and the need to connect, and the various ways even the most far-flung of lives intersect with one another. Certainly at times This Is Us is a little heavy-handed with its melodramatic twists and turns, but overall it has evoked a dynamic conversation in our own household. Whenever we enjoy a show we like to play a little game of what story in the Bible does this evoke? (You all should play it sometime!) And so for February I ll be doing a three week sermon series that is tangentially related to some of the complicated issues This Is Us centers on using three stories from the Old Testament. An essential element of the biblical witness is the use of story to show the wide range of human experiences we all share and how God is in the midst of those experiences. Centering on stories from the Book of Ruth, Abraham and Sarah and Hagar, and King David and his friend Jonathan, we ll explore how their stories intersect with our own. You won t need to know anything about This Is Us to enjoy this sermon series, just your own story. Peace, Pastor Jeff This Is Us: The Bible s Story Is Our Story February 12: Ruth 1 February 19: Genesis 16 February 26: 1 Samuel 18:1-4
