Connect Around God s Table For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord s death until he comes. 1 Corinthians 11:26 Holy Week comes at the end of March this year, so this month I get to write about Maundy Thursday and let my colleague proclaim the joy of Easter next month. It s a privilege to get to linger for a moment and pay attention to the meal that Jesus shares with his disciples before he is betrayed in the Garden of Gethsemane and sent to die on the cross. The meal of Holy Communion is the time when we get to connect around God s table. Whether it is Sunday morning or Monday evening, that time when we eat the bread and drink the wine is, as Paul writes to the Corinthian Christians, the time when we proclaim the Lord s death until he comes. It is such a simple meal of bread and wine, yet faith brings Jesus to us in this meal. Lutherans talk about the real presence of Jesus in the sacrament of Holy Communion. In God s own holy mystery, when we receive the bread and the wine, Jesus is with us. Really present with us. Not just in our thoughts. Not just as a remembrance of what Jesus shared with his disciples two thousand years ago. Really present. With us. Now. 2 Martin Luther wrote in the Small Catechism: How can bodily eating and drinking do such a great thing (bringing life and salvation)? Eating and drinking certainly do not do it, but rather the words that are recorded: given for you and shed for you for the forgiveness of sin. These words, when accompanied by the physical eating and drinking, are the essential thing in the sacrament, and whoever believes these very words has what they declare and state, namely, forgiveness of sin. (see Evangelical Lutheran Worship book page 1166) We connect around God s table with Jesus and with all the Christians who have gone before us, all who gather with us at Trinity, across town, and around the world, and with all who come after us. We connect around God s table to receive a simple meal, offered to us by our Savior, to give us the gift of forgiveness of sin. We connect around God s table to receive life and salvation as we proclaim the Lord s death until he comes. On Maundy Thursday, March 29, we ll gather once again and welcome children (mostly fifth graders) to receive Holy Communion for the first time. Come, gather with them, as we hear Jesus invitation to connect around God s table to receive forgiveness, life, and salvation. In Peace, Pastor Kristi Weber

LENT/ EASTER SCHEDULE February 21~ Lenten conversations happen evry Wednesday in Lent immediately following the Lenten Service at 6:45 p.m. Youth, parents, mentors and caring adults are all invited (and needed) for these discussions. March 25~ Palm Sunday March 29~ Maundy Thursday Service @7:00 March 30~Youth lead Good Friday Service @7:00 April 1~Easter Sunday (Youth serve Easter Breakfast) CONGREGATIONAL LENTEN PROJECT Each year, the Trinity Youth plan and lead a Lenten project for the entire congregation. Last year s Connect string art project encouraged young and old to connect around the board, connect string to nail and connect with each other. This Lent we are making a Paper Chain Mosaic. Like each link in our chain is vital to the complete project, so each person is at Trinity. Each individual, each couple, each family is a vital part of the whole that adds strength and beauty to this Trinity family of believers. Please stop by the table in the Gathering Space to make paper chains with us. The finished piece will be revealed on Easter Sunday. COFFEE CART Each month a different group from Trinity takes its turn at hosting the Coffee Cart. Trinity's young people are hosting the Coffee Cart in the months of March and April. Hosting the cart requires being at church a bit early (a little after 9:00a.m.), the making or buying of treats (6 dozen) and making coffee (provided by the church) to be served in the Gathering Space between services on Sundays. Please let me know when/if you are available to host. Please know that I am so grateful for all of the ways that you support Trinity and the youth programs. Thank You! I will be available to help get things set up and make coffee if you would like help or if you haven't done it before. Please just let Kirstie (kirstiedobson@yahoo.com) know if you need a hand in this way. (Two families can sign up for the same week and share duties) March s dates are as follows: 3/11, 3/18, 3/25 April: 4/8, 4/15, 4/22 and 4/29 CIRCUS The Youth are again working the Shrine Circus. This year the Circus is on Tuesday, April 10. They would like us to be at the Civic Center by 5:00. We will be selling popcorn and toys, making cotton candy and slushies and really just helping out in any way that we can. The pay is $30 per worker, so youth and moms and dads are welcome to be a part of this fun, easy fundraiser. Please let me know if your young person and/or your family can help us out in this way. Continued on page 9 7
