Term 2, Week 6 Thursday, 8th June, 2017 Dear Families, Last week I was privileged to join many of our Year 7 students and staff on our trip to Canberra. It was an amazing week, with so many enjoyable experiences. We all enjoyed exploring the sites of Canberra and being immersed in our National Capital. Highlights were visiting Parliament House and the War Memorial. At the Memorial we were also participants in the Last Post Ceremony. Thank you to Joshua Silverwood and Jayden Young who presented a memorial wreath on our school s behalf. Everyone loved the fun experiences of Questacom and the Deep Space Centre. We were very pleased with the knowledgeable comments and questions our students asked and found them respectful and highly interested in this special learning experience. A big thank you to the Year 7 teachers for their great care and commitment throughout the week - Luke Ferguson, Luke Taverner, Kate Onofrio, Lucy White and Paula Simionato. We had a wonderful time and though the weather was very cold, we enjoyed sunny days and each others company throughout the week. (See Pages 2 & 3 for Canberra photos.) Over the next few weeks, the leadership team will begin enrolments for children to attend our school in 2019. We do still have limited vacancies for 2018 and encourage you to place an enrolment as soon as possible. I am aware of the year's passing very quickly and at times, families are late to enrol a younger sibling. You may also know of a family who may be interested to attend SFX. Please see Sonya Carroll for any enrolment information. A school tour is approaching on Saturday, July 1st and we look forward to showcasing our school to prospective families. In recent weeks, staff have reviewed and rewritten our procedures for home learning. Please see below. This Friday, staff will be joined by our Special Education coordinator from the CEO to review our current procedures for Individual Education Plans. This documentation is developed for children who require accommodations in the classroom to best support their learning. We are spending the day to develop more holistic documents that provide a comprehensive and educationally sound basis for support. We endeavour to create an educational programme for each child at SFX that meets both their learning and social needs. Often students will be asked to complete tasks to practice basic knowledge and skills at home to support their learning. This home learning relies on the partnership between families and schools to support student achievement. We believe that reading skills are important in connecting learners with the world around them, and we encourage students to engage in daily reading at home, both independently and with families. We also encourage the achievement of students individual learning goals by asking students toi either finish incomplete classroom tasks at home, or complete activities that support classroom programmes. We believe that successful learning requires students to develop positive self-management and organisational skills in collaboration with school and families. To achieve this, we continue to work together with families to ensure students are supported in their learning. I loved Canberra, even though it was really cold, I didn t care because after a while I heated up because of all the activities we did. I am thankful that I went because I had so much fun with all my friends and I am thankful to them for making it a great experience for me. I would definitely go again but not without my friends. My favourite would have had to be Questacon because I have never been before and I always had a smile on my face. Thank you teacher s(and school) for giving me this opportunity and I would also like to thank my parents for paying for the trip. Scarlett Smith 3

As the Father has sent me, even so I send you... Receive the Holy Spirit (John 20:21-22). Last Sunday the Church celebrated the feast of Pentecost. On Pentecost, the Apostles did not just proclaim the Good News; they proclaimed it in languages they did not even know to people who had gathered in Jerusalem from all over the world. Pentecost celebrates the diversity and unity of the global Church. Our school community comes from a diverse background, but we are united in that there are many parts to one Body and many gifts, but the same Spirit. In a similar way we are connected to creation, with God s breath or the glory of the Creator Spirit, reflected in every creature we are able to see; How great is your name, O Lord our God, through all the earth! (Ps 8:2, 10). During the coming week, we have approximately 40 of our students who will celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation and First Holy Communion. These young people and their families have been preparing for this special time over the past year and we pray that they will feel the presence of the Creator and that the gift of the Holy Spirit will draw them closer to God and to one another. Please keep them in your prayers. St Vincent de Paul Cold winter nights and mornings are especially difficult for the disadvantaged people in our community. Thank you to everyone who has donated clothes and blankets to the Vinnies bins. These will be at school until Friday 16 th June. A reminder also to send in nonperishable food to your child s classroom before Thursday 15 th June so that this can be distributed to those most vulnerable in our community. Community Prayer Change of date Our next community prayer will be held under the green room shelter at 9am on Thursday 15th June hosted by Room 1. All parents and friends are welcome to join us.
