Volume 9 Issue 5 May 2018 From the Commander Here we are again at the start of a new month. Last month the annual elections were held for 2018/2019 and we are now beginning to make plans to move forward with next year. It is also with great pleasure that I can say that we had a group of members that stepped forward to accept nominations that were from the Afghanistan and Iraq wars. These members are what make our post so good in that we are now having the future leaders of our post stepping forward to reassure our posts future in the coming years. Last week, I was informed by the state officials that our post was one of the leaders in memberships in the state. The point that we should be the most proud of is that we did not have to have a membership drive or draw from our funds to pay for memberships. These are all from people that requested to become members! If you have not been to the post in a while, our "Queen of Hearts" jackpot is now at $12,355.00 for this Sunday. It is a day that you can have a lot of fun with all of the members. In conclusion, with spring coming on, be safe and for some fun come in and see us at your post! Terry Clark, Commander In This Issue From the Commander From the Auxiliary President From the Events Committee 2018 2019 Election Results 2017-2018 Officers 2017-2018 Auxiliary Officers Classifieds April Calendar The Back Page Canteen Menu From the Auxiliary President Dear Sisters & Brothers, another year for the Auxiliary officers is coming to a close. After State Convention the new officers will take their positions. With that said I am so proud to present the following elected officers for the 2018-2019 year: PRESIDENT: SR. VICE PRESIDENT: JR. VICE PRESIDENT: SECRETARY: TREASURER: CONDUCTRESS: CHAPLIN: GUARD: TRUSTEES: Debbie Andrew Amy Ohara Donna Mazzini To be determined Cheryl Higgins Margie Ekstrand Mary Jordan Earl Kennedy Marie McEnry 3 rd year; Dan Mazzini 2 nd year; Donna Mazzini 1 st year Let us all welcome them and support them during their year of office. Our State Convention is being held in Bremerton WA this year from June 20-23, 2018. LaVonne and I will be representing the VFW Auxiliary. We had our official Auxiliary visit and report completed by our State President, Laurie Lukas. I have to say that we are looking good. There are a few minor adjustments that need to be made and I will see that they are completed and then pass it on to the new incoming President. We currently have 151 members and we are at 102.2%. Thanks to all of you that have made this happen. With that being said, out of 151 members we only have approximately 20 that show up to our meetings. So, if you can make at least 1 or 2 of the meetings out of 12 that would wonderful. Our Auxiliary is going to have a fund raiser for Marjorie Stetson who is moving up the chairs in department. This event will be on Memorial Day. We are going to get together in making firecrackers on May 21 st at 6pm. So, all that can help out would be greatly appreciated. It is with great sadness that we have lost two of our Auxiliary Members; Lynn Delong and Anette Winslow. Our prayers and thoughts are with the Continued on next page

family. Our Auxiliary is planning on having a celebration of life with a Pot Luck for these two Ladies. The date and time have not been decided yet. We are waiting to hear from the families. Lynn DeLong s service was held at the Evergreen Memorial Gardens Cemetery on April 24 th. I was told that there were many of our Auxiliary and Post members attend. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the VFW Auxiliary Post 7824. The Scholarship Programs for 2018-2019 have been announced: *VOICE OF DEMORACRY* Why My Vote Matters *PATRIOT S PEN* *YOUTH ESSAY* Why I Honor the American Flag How the American Flag Makes Me Feel The VA Fisher House in Vancouver WA is celebrating its two-year anniversary on Wednesday May 23 rd from 11am-2pm. Please join them to tour the home and see what they do each day to serve our Veteran and Military Families. Refreshments will be served. A quote from our State Department President, Laurie Lurie: I would ask all Auxiliaries and their members to remember WHY they are working in their communities to help our Veterans and their Families, teach and lead our youth to be responsible and caring Americans and to enrich our own lives through friendship, sisterhood and brotherhood Loyally, Jenifer Harris - President VFW Aux Post 7824 Greetings From Your Events Committee ~ Nothing better than springtime and sunshine in the Pacific Northwest!! From the Events Committee Cinco de Mayo will be a fun evening at the Post on May 5th. Please take a look at the flyer included in the Scuttlebutt. Monday, May 28th is Memorial Day and the summer events and military birthdays are all around the corner so keep an eye on the monitor in the Canteen and check the Scuttlebutt for additional details. From the Canteen Manager Hello everyone! Here we are, it s May already! I apologize for not meeting last months deadline for our Scuttlebutt. Time gets away from us. I hope everyone had a good month of April. I m wanting to touch on a few subjects before getting into our schedules of upcoming events. Some of you may have noticed that I have cut back on being in the Canteen lately. There are a few reasons for this. The major being recently I ve sensed an uneasy/unfriendly atmosphere. I've always taken great pride in how friendly our Post is. That is my job as your Canteen Manager, to keep things friendly and operational. It is also my job to have people in positions to do the same, whether I m there or not. I can t continue to live at the Post. We also all know we can t keep everyone happy at all times. Offering The best service with care and understanding is truly what I strive for! We all have opinions but our opinions shouldn t cause controversy. The members of this Post and it s affiliates are such caring and friendly people, it s no wonder why our Memberships are growing at a more rapid pace than most other Organizations. Another reason for stepping back is my inability to have personal time when I m not working. If you see me at these times, you look at me as if I am at work. If you have a topic that needs my attention as the Manager please reach out but please do it during daytime hours of the week. If you are unable to reach me at the Post my phone number will be at the end of my article. I LOVE my job and everyone that I work with and around, however I ve found it easier to do this job if I spend less social time here. You may have heard me say I m burning out well, I WAS! I have thought long and hard over whether to step down and be done or tighten up my reigns and carry on with what I love doing. At the wishes of the House Committee, I give you, on my honor, that I will jump back in and do my absolute best for you and your Canteen. Ok let s get on to our upcoming events... May seems to be our kickoff to a lot of parties and lots of fun. At this time we need to ask for someone to step up on a very short notice to keep the May Queen event going. Richard Alvarez has done this for more years than I am aware of and this is a huge fundraiser that I would hate to see go away. This usually falls on Armed Forces Day which is May 19th this year. Contact me for more information. Our first event this month is Cinco De Mayo, (May 5) we will have games and raffles throughout the evening. The menu will be Tortilla soup and a Nacho bar from 5-7 pm for $8.50. Following that, will be Mothers Day Sunday May 13th. Some of the men will be volunteering to work ALL positions that day;) They are doing a brunch starting at 10 and serving until 1. The cost will be $10.50. There will be NO regular breakfast menu that day. As far as I know, at this timewe will hold Queen of Hearts that day as well. The pot is growwwwing...$$$. Our last event of the month will be our Memorial Day BBQ. The Post will provide your choice of a hamburger or a hotdog including baked beans and a pasta salad for $8.00. We will begin serving at 2 and grill until 6. After 6pm will be fryers only. I m hoping we will have enough interest to have another corn hole tournament as well. Thanks for hanging in there with me through this lengthy article. I wish you all of the best until we see each other again. Stay healthy and safe. I will look forward to seeing you soon! God Bless!
