Share God s Good News with All To you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ, the Lord. Luke 2:11 Angels bring a message from God. To you is born the Lord. To you. God s good news of Jesus birth is good news to you. First the angels told the shepherds. Go to Bethlehem. There you will see this child born to be good news for you. Then the angels sang, Glory to God in the highest! This good news could not be contained. Their voices filled the heavens with song. The shepherds went to see Jesus with their own eyes. This gift of God was given to them, was given to you. They returned from Bethlehem with good news to share. Glorifying and praising God, they did not hold back. God s good news needed to be shared. Shared with new parents still trying to grasp the wonder of God s gift to them. Shared with others working late into the night. Shared with family. Shared with friends. Shared with people they did not yet know. Shared until the message of God s good news came to you. Now you are the one to carry the message. You are the one to share God s gift of Christ, God s good news for all. Do you share God s good news with a nativity set that the grandchildren play with at your home? Do you share God s good news with an Advent calendar that invites your children to open a window each day in anticipation of Jesus birth? Do you share God s good news as you thank the people who ring bells as they invite people to give to assist the economically vulnerable in our community? Do you share God s good news when you support the ministries you care about that sing, pray and proclaim that Jesus has come to you and to all? As you come to worship this Christmas Eve and as you prepare yourselves throughout this Advent season to receive God s gift of Jesus Christ, may you join with shepherds and angels who share God s good news with all. In Peace, Pastor Kristi Weber 2

Monday, December 25 NO worship service Sunday, December 31 8:30 and 10:45 a.m. Lessons and Carols Monday, January 1 NO Monday worship service Five worship times on December 24? Yes, the two morning services on December 24 will focus on the anticipation of Jesus coming. We will light the fourth candle on the Advent wreath, hear the announcement the angel Gabriel gave to Mary, and feel the hopeful expectation Mary and Elizabeth shared as they waited for the births of their sons. The three afternoon and evening services on December 24 will include the traditional Christmas Gospel (complete with Mary, Joseph, Jesus in the manger, angels and shepherds). Candles will be lit as we sing Silent Night. Musicians who are children or youth are invited to offer prelude music at either the 3:30 or 5:30 p.m. service. Please speak with Mr. Robert Murphy and play your piece for him by December 16. All five services will include Holy Communion. If you come to one morning service and one afternoon/evening service, you will experience two different worship services. 4

Seeking Young Musicians for Christmas Eve Services Trinity s Director of Music Ministries, Robert Murphy, is seeking youth musical volunteers for special music and preludes for the Christmas Eve Services. Youth can be from kindergarten to high school. We are looking for youth with musical talents who would be willing to perform instrumental arrangements of sacred Christmas Carols for the prelude as well as special music. Criteria: Music selection must be performance ready. The selection must be played for Mr. Murphy by noon on Saturday, December 16. This is an opportunity for students who are learning Christmas carols for their upcoming piano recitals or band concerts. Longest Night Service As the longest night of the year approaches, the darkness seems to surround us from early evening until well into the morning. This worship service on Monday, December 18 at 6:00 p.m. is a Christmas time service with a quieter, more reflective tone. For people who approach Christmas this year with a heavy heart, this service is intended to offer a gentle space for prayer and for seeing the light of Jesus Christ in the midst of darkness. Holiday Office Hours The Trinity Office will be closed on: Monday, December 25 and Monday, January 1 St. Olaf Christmas Festival Showing Sunday, December 17 2:00 pm Gather in Trinity's sanctuary for a showing of the 2017 Christmas Festival from St. Olaf College. This musical presentation welcomes the Christmas season with the voices of five choirs plus the St. Olaf Orchestra. There is no charge for this event that is open to the community. 5

For many, the anticipation of cherished time with family is a large part of the joy and excitement of Christmas. However, not everyone finds joy and peace, or even safety, in their home and family. Lynn Talley, director of Safe Shelter, will speak at Young at Heart in the Fellowship Hall at 2 p.m. Monday, December 11, sharing both her passion for helping fearful and abused persons find hope, comfort, and safety and her excitement about the construction of Mary s House to increase the number of persons served. Following her talk, everyone will enjoy Christmas cookies brought by attendees who wish to share their Christmas baking. All are welcome. State Hospital Gifts Requested The State Hospital needs donations of new, unwrapped, and unbreakable gifts for patients. They can be brought to Trinity s office before December 7. Gifts can include pajama sets, lounge pants, slippers, sweatshirts, sweatpants, socks, winter caps or hats and gloves, fleece throws, men s handkerchiefs and billfolds, lotions, makeup for women, shampoo, conditioner, hand lotion, Memorials toothpaste and toothbrushes, playing cards, art supplies, adult coloring books, crayons, colored pencils, puzzles, all-occasion greeting cards, Bibles and devotional books. No glass, metal, aluminum, ceramic items, notebooks or books with spiral binding, alcoholbased perfumes, mouthwash, or deodorant. St. John s Bible Visit Alternative Christmas Gifts Once Again, the Outreach Committee has a selection of ELCA Good Gifts available this Christmas. An Advent tree decorated with ornaments representing the gifts that can be chosen is in the Gathering Space. The gifts, which can be given in honor of someone, will grow the church, fight hunger, and transform lives. Never has the need been as great for compassionate outreach worldwide. Gifts could include farm animals, school supplies or tuition, vaccinations, health care, food, mosquito nets, tree seedlings, and many other projects identified as needs and priorities in the recipient communities. Good Gifts will be available in the Gathering Space through December 17. For more information, there is a catalog in the Gathering Space that explains the program. Grace Circle Grace Circle meets Tuesday, December 19 at 7:00 p.m. at the home of Kelly Krein (504 12 th St. NW.) Nine people from Trinity and St. John s Lutheran Churches travelled in the new Trinity van to see the Saint John s Bible in Moorhead on October 23. Illuminating the Word: The Saint John s Bible, brought original folios from all seven volumes of The Saint John s Bible, along with tools, sketches, materials, and rare books, to the Fargo-Moorhead community at the Hjemkomst Center. The Saint John s Bible is the first illuminated and handwritten Bible to be commissioned by a Benedictine monastery in 500 years. The exhibit will be on display through December 31. Check out www.hcscconline.org/sjb for more information. 6

Food for a Cause In November, Thrivent challenged churches to collect 500 items for their local food pantries. The first 100 churches in the region to meet that goal would get another $500 for the food pantry. Trinity collected 511 items for the Community Action Food Pantry, which got another $500. We also collected grocery carts full of food for the Salvation Army food shelf and the Trinity s Semla Foundation donated another $500 to the Salvation Army. Way to Go Trinity! Reaching Out: Thanksgiving Food Baskets Outreach Team members Wynn and Donette Rasmussen, Shirley Driessen, Ruth Urdahl, Erin Klien, and Sue Carlson packed Thanksgiving baskets to take to nine families in our Trinity community. Parents: It will be cold! Please remind your youth to wear cold weather gear, including: hats, mittens, snow pants, coats and boots and a blanket if they would like to. We do have a church van to travel back and forth, but we may still need extra vehicles and drivers capable of hauling young people (depending on the number of young people attending). Please contact me if you are willing to help in this way. Thank You! On the morning of the 10th, we will meet upstairs in the Fellowship Hall and load into vehicles from there. We will do our best to return to Trinity by 10:45. There is a permission slip attached below.
