dave s desk EPHPHETHA The Catholic Baptism Rite has a part that flows directly from our Sunday Gospel reading. It is called the Ephphatha or Prayer over Ears and Mouth. The celebrant touches the ears and mouth with his thumb saying: The Lord Jesus made the deaf hear and the dumb speak. May he soon touch your ears to receive his word, and your mouth to proclaim his faith, to the praise and glory of God the Father. The Sunday Gospel scene is interesting to reflect on. We know that the man brought to Jesus was deaf and had a speech impediment but he wasn t blind. So the man must have been wondering what was going as the events unfolded. He took him off by himself away from the crowd. He put His finger into the man s ears and, spitting, touch his tongue; then He looked up to heaven and groaned, and said to him, Ephphatha! - that is, Be opened! - And immediately the man s ears were opened, his speech impediment was removed, and he spoke plainly. That man s life was changed because of his encounter with the Divine Healer, Jesus Christ. youth group WITH THE LORD The Liturgy of the Hours that clergy and religious are required to pray daily and lay people are invited to pray, is the prayer of the Church that marks particular times of the day with prayer. The very first words in the morning are: Lord, open my lips. And my mouth will proclaim Your praise. It s a great way to open our day. Our challenge then is to make sure that our words and deeds do in fact proclaim His praise! We are called to hear God and speak to Him. That s the basic essence of prayer. interested in R.C.I.A.? looking ahead OCTOBER 23 & 24 All Saints Parish recently received a grant from the Idaho Catholic Foundation for a family formation parish event that will be held this October. Our family formation focus this upcoming year will be Salvation History. Our speaker will be Thomas Smith who was raised in the Mormon tradition and eventually becoming a Baptist minister before entering the Catholic Church. He is a great Biblical teacher with expertise in Salvation History. We will have him with us for two evening presentations here at All Saints social hall. The first presentation will be his conversion testimony and the second evening presentation will explore how our story of life fits into God s story of leading His people. There is no cost for this event and it is open to everyone. For more information about Thomas' work, visit his website: www.gen215.org Thomas Smith is one of the most gifted speakers I know. He has an unusual gift for making the beautiful details of salvation history accessible to those who are just beginning as well as those who have been studying the Bible for many years. This is a rare gift and Thomas does it with generosity and enthusiasm. Those who have heard Thomas speak, will walk away wanting to know more about the Bible and more importantly will want to deepen their relationship with the author, the living Word, Jesus Christ. Jeff Cavins Author of the Great Adventure Bible Timeline Series Thomas Smith is one of the most engaging, down to earth, dynamic scripture scholars out there. His ability to teach is truly a gift. He doesn t only impart knowledge, he leads people closer to the heart of scripture: Jesus Christ. Chris Stefanick author of Raising Pure Teens, international speaker, founder and President of Real Life Catholic catholic BOOKRACK Fr. Jacques Philippe is "Internationally renowned and beloved for his spiritually acute wisdom." A collection of his writings are now on the bookrack. Each small book is like a retreat with the best of spiritual directors. The titles are: Called to Life; Real Mercy; Thirsting for Prayer; The Eight Doors of the Kingdom; Time for God; In the School of the Holy Spirit; Interior Freedom; The Way of Trust and Love; Fire and Light: and Maintaining Peace. They are great books sure to enrich your spiritual life! harvest festival EVENT HELP In last week s bulletin there was an insert that outlined the various activities and events where parishioner help is being sought. The flyer was meant as an overall preview to allow you to discern where you feel best suited to serve. Additional copies can be found in the narthex. Sign up sheets for each of those activities and events are on the table in narthex so you can actually sign-up to help in the area (s) of interest to you. Thank you in advance for helping and supporting our one major parish fundraiser of the year. september st.vincent depaul DONATION NEEDS For September Social Services are focusing on the need for men's underwear and used jeans and shoes. Donations can be dropped off at either the Lewiston or Clarkston store and tell the attendant its for Social Services or mark it for "Social Services". We would like to thank the parishioners that were generous in donating the new socks and underwear for the children. They were badly needed and came in time for the first days of school. thanking our BULLETIN SPONSOR Thank you D & D Repair for being a bulletin advertiser who sponsors the printing of our weekly bulletin. 4
