REACH, TEACH, REJOICE! March 25, 2018

We re delighted you ve chosen to worship with us this morning. At St. Mark it s our commitment to you that we faithfully proclaim God s Word so that your faith may grow during your time with us. Our goal is to make disciples of Jesus Christ by proclaiming the good news of what He has done for us. We welcome the opportunity to answer any questions you have. Ushers and Greeters are available in the narthex (entryway) to answer any questions you may have and offer you any assistance you may need. Restrooms are located in the hallway to the north of the sanctuary. We love having children in worship and encourage them to sing and pray along with their parents. Children s Bulletins and Busy Bags are available in the entryway for your family to use. If your child becomes a bit restless during the service and you think they could use a break, we have a Nursery Space in the church office that you can use. An usher can guide you there. Friendship Cards are found in the racks of each pew. We ask that during the offering you fill out a card that we may have a record of your visit and get to know you a little bit better. OUR THEME FOR TODAY Serious Savior We have seen the seriousness of our Savior in many ways. Today we behold it in its fullness. On this Passion Sunday we hail him as he enters Jerusalem, and then follow him all the way to his cross. Blessed is he, for he will finish what he has begun! For that reason and none other, blessed are we! Hosanna in the highest!

PSALM 24 M: The earth is the LORD s and everything in it, C: The world, and all who live in it; M: For he founded it upon the seas C: And established it upon the waters.

M: Who may ascend the hill of the LORD? C: Who may stand in his holy place? M: He who has clean hands and a pure heart, C: He will receive blessing from God his Savior. M: Lift up your heads, O you gates; be lifted up you ancient doors C: That the King of glory may come in. M: Who is the King of glory? C: The LORD strong and mighty, the LORD mighty in battle. M: Lift up your heads, O you gates; lift them up, you ancient doors, C: That the King of glory may come in. M: Who is he, this King of glory? C: The LORD Almighty he is the King of glory. GOSPEL Mark 11:1-10 As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples, 2 saying to them, "Go to the village ahead of you, and just as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. 3 If anyone asks you, 'Why are you doing this?' tell him, 'The Lord needs it and will send it back here shortly.' " 4 They went and found a colt outside in the street, tied at a doorway. As they untied it, 5 some people standing there asked, "What are you doing, untying that colt?" 6 They answered as Jesus had told them to, and the people let them go. 7 When they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks over it, he sat on it. 8 Many people spread their cloaks on the road, while others spread branches they had cut in the fields. 9 Those who went ahead and those who followed shouted, "Hosanna!" "Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!" 10 "Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David!" "Hosanna in the highest!"

After a brief introduction, the congregation sings All glory, laud, and honor To you, Redeemer, King, To whom the lips of children Made sweet hosannas ring. You are the King of Israel And David's royal Son, Now in the Lord's name coming, Our King and blessed one. All glory, laud, and honor To you, Redeemer, King, To whom the lips of children Made sweet hosannas ring. The people of the Hebrews With palms before you went; Our praise and prayer and anthems Before you we present. PRAYER OF THE DAY M: Let us pray. C: We praise you, O God, for the great acts of love by which you redeemed us through your Son, Jesus Christ. As he was acclaimed by those who scattered their garments and branches of palm in his path, so may we always hail him as our King and follow him with perfect confidence; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

THE PASSION HISTORY OF OUR LORD Plot, Passover, and Lord s Supper Mark 14:1-26 HYMN: CW 133 Ride On, Ride On in Majesty Gethsemane Mark 14:27-52 HYMN: Gethsemane 1 To see the King of heaven fall 2 To know each friend will fall away, In anguish to His knees, And heaven's voice be still, The Light and Hope of all the world For hell to have its vengeful day Now overwhelmed with grief. Upon Golgotha's hill. What nameless horrors must He see, No words describe the Savior's plight - To cry out in the garden: To be by God forsaken Oh, take this cup away from me Till wrath and love are satisfied Yet not my will but Yours, And every sin is paid Yet not my will but Yours. And every sin is paid 3 What took Him to this wretched place, What kept Him on this road? His love for Adam's cursed race, For every broken soul. No sin too slight to overlook, No crime too great to carry, All mingled in this poisoned cup And yet He drank it all, The Savior drank it all, The Savior drank it all. Trial and Denial Mark 14:53-72 HYMN: CW 117 (verses 1-4) O Dearest Jesus

Before Pilate Mark 15:1-15 HYMN: CWS 716 No Tramp of Soldiers Marching Feet No tramp of soldiers marching feet With banners and with drums, No sound of music s martial beat: The King of glory comes! To greet what pomp of kingly pride No bells in triumph ring, No city gates swing open wide: Behold, behold your King! And yet he comes. The children cheer; With palms his path is strown. With ev ry step the cross draws near: The King of glory s throne. Astride a colt he passes by As loud hosannas ring, Or else the very stones would cry, Behold, behold your King! What fading flow rs his road adorn; The palms, how soon laid down! No bloom or leaf but only thorn The King of glory s crown. The soldiers mock, the rabble cries. The streets with tumult ring, As Pilate to the mob replies, Behold, behold your King! Now he who bore for mortals sake The cross and all its pains And chose a servant s form to take, The King of glory reigns. Hosanna to the Savior s name Till heaven s rafters ring, And all the ransomed host proclaim, Behold, behold your King! What grace is this! My Lord and King Has set his face to suffering. My God eternal dies to bring Eternal life to me.

What grace is this That very God Would stoop to lift a cross of wood And walk a road of rock and blood, A sinner s road, for me. What grace is this! Though Lord of all, He yields to Pontius Pilate s law And lets the Roman hammers draw A rush of blood for me. What grace is this! Rude agonies! With common thieves he hangs and bleeds. The sinless Son bears each misdeed. He pays for all, for me. What grace is this! Once wrapped in cloths And gently laid in manger-trough, He s taken, dead, from wretched cross And wrapped again for me. What grace is this? How can it be? He wears this raw humility To lift me to eternity. Such grace sweet grace for me. Text: Laurie F. Gauger, b. 1965 2005 Laurie F. Gauger. All rights reserved. Used by permission. Death and Burial Mark 15:33-47

HYMN: CWS 718 Rest, O Christ, From All Your Labor Rest, O Christ, from all your labor; Sleep within your borrowed tomb. Foes have crucified and bound you Fast within death s narrow room. Pilate s guards stand watching, waiting Where they rolled the sealing stone. All unseen another watches: God will not forsake his own. Peace at last from all your anguish, Wounds in hand and feet and side. Enemies no longer mock you, Scourged, abandoned, crucified. Faithful women gather spices, Weep for you whom sin has slain. Though they mourn, the God who guards you Will not let your death be vain. Help us keep this solemn Sabbath As we wait for Easter dawn. Earth s dark night of sin is passing; Death s long reign will soon be gone. Christ, in whom the new creation Rises brighter than the sun: May we, as we watch for morning, Trust the vict ry you have won. As through parting Red Sea waters Israel marched to liberty, So we pass through baptism s water, Washed by grace, from sin set free. Jesus, risen, living, reigning Now and through eternity: Grant that, through your life undying, We may live victoriously. Text: Herman G. Stuempfle Jr., 1923 2007 1993 GIA Publications, Inc. We join the first Palm Sunday worshipers in praising and glorifying you for coming to this earth to be our Savior. C: Though you are one with God the Father and Lord of all, you humbled yourself and became one with us.

M: Thanks be to you for living a life of perfect conformity to God s holy law in our place. C: Praise be to you for being obedient to death, even death on a cross, to redeem us from sin. M: Cause our voices to blend with those who sang your praises as you rode into Jerusalem. Move us to confess you before others as our Lord. Help us proclaim the message of peace and forgiveness to people of all nations. C: Use us to assure all people that your blood has set them free from sin, death and the devil. M: Lord Jesus, you are King over all the earth. Bless the nations of the world with wise rulers and good government. Let peace prevail. Grant success to the businesses and industries of our land to serve for the common good. Cause all employers to be honest and fair-minded and all employees to be diligent and faithful. C: Look with favor on our nation s schools. Be with those who teach and those who learn. Comfort the sick and the afflicted with the assurance of your care and protection. Strengthen the faith of the dying. Special prayers and petitions may follow M: Hear us Lord, as we bring you our private petitions. Silent prayer. M: Dear Savior, as we walk with you this week toward Calvary, keep us focused on your purpose for coming into this world and on our calling to spread this wonderful message of salvation. Hear us for your mercy s sake. Amen.

THE LORD S PRAYER M: O Lord, remember us in your kingdom, and teach us to pray. C: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. THE BLESSING M: Brothers and sisters, go in peace. Live in harmony with one another. Serve the Lord with gladness. The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look on you with favor and give you peace. C: Amen.
